I can pretty much guarantee your son took some for a night out and topped up with water. Rinse and repeat over the past year since last Xmas and it's now mostly water. I'd be 99.9% certain I'm right on that

You infuriate me with this presumptive attitude!

Could you suggest any scotch i could try. Ive never tasted scotch. Saw ballenines finest inbtesco for 23 .

Well, that's just an entry-level blended whisky. The price for single malts in Ireland is pretty high which makes it prohibitive for most to experiment.

Bushmills is a nice blend regularly on sale for €21 (spotted it at my Aldi for €16). If this is your only treat certainly grab a bottle of Bushmill Black on sale for €25.

Some reckon it can deteriorate a little in taste, I hope nobody would pour it down the sink after 6 months considering it undrinkable/unsuable in any way.

My best mate, who's whiskey room resembles an off licence told me he saw a bottle of Aberlour whiskey in a hotel he was staying in. He got a glass and, Quote "It was off" it tasted terrible. That was the first I knew or heard that whiskey can go off.
Here is my mates Facebook page. If you go down to the video "The Panic Room" that is he's whiskey room. So if he tells me whiskey goes off, I believe him.

Looking up in Google there is a lot of articles discussing whiskey going off/Bad.

Second, most experts agree that if you have less than half the bottle left, you should finish it within 1-2 years. If you have a quarter left, finish it within 3-4 months. The oxygen in the air oxidizes the whisky, which can impact the flavor.

Once a bottle gets down to a level where only a third of the contents are left, then the ratio of air to whisky in the bottle becomes critical. At around this stage, you have approximately 4 to 6 months to finish the contents before oxidation will start to have a NOTICEABLE negative affect.

Taste can degrade in certain circumstances. Won't send you to the doctor any faster than any other whiskey though

It would make sense to pour it into smaller bottles once open so, (I see it mentioned in one link). I know on hobby distillation forums people will aerate spirits for long periods to improve taste.
