Medical Engineering CFD Query

    Hi all,

    I want to know if people have experience with medical image processing softwares and their capabilities to export files for further analysis (such as CFD)

    I am specifically looking into softwares that can do these 4 things -

    Medical Image Processing and Measurements (eg. volumetric measurements of blood vessels and such)
    Design, Meshing and Geometry Optimisation (be able to use the above measurements and create a mesh file or a CAD file)
    Export the file for 3D printing
    Export the file for CFD analysis (such as ANSYS)

    I'm aware of softwares such as Endosize, 3mensio, OsiriX, TeraRecon, Mimics, etc. Some of these are great at measurements and some can do almost all of what's mentioned above in one package.

    If anybody has any experience in using these softwares on a regular basis or got experience on these and decided not to use them, could you please tell me why they are good/bad.

    Reasons for asking is because my work involves a type of workflow where I get the CT scans, I perform image processing (through one of those softwares), take measurements (eg. volume of the aorta), using these measurements, create a mesh file which can be exported to a CFD software for flow analysis or onto a 3D printer (for further simulation).

    I've read Mimics by Materialise is one software that is capable of doing all of the above?

    Any input with this would be of great help. I am tasked with finding out what softwares work best for the work that i will be doing for the next three years.

    That's some fairly high end stuff you're working on there.

    Maybe asking on a more specialised site like https://www.cfd-online.com/ would be a good idea.

    I've no experience of medical software, but I'd be surprised if one package can do everything you want. Splitting the task into imaging (exporting to a standard format) and geometry/mesh creation (importing the same format) might give you more options.

    As an example, I've seen 3D X-ray scans where point clouds of the surfaces can be exported in STL format (I think). Plenty of modelling, meshing etc. codes can then import these for analysis.
