I celebrate Christmas for the very simple reason that it symbolises the triumph of consumerism over religion. Truly magical.

I don't celebrate the religious thing as I'm agnostic, but I will probably escort my Grandmother to church because it's important to her and my being with her makes her happy.

For me it's all about being together with family, but I know the other aspects are important to others and I try be respectful of that within reason.

Yes. Despite not being religious, I am eternally grateful to Christianity for the defence of Europe from Islam.

How is Christianity "defending Europe from islam"?

I'll be celebrating Yule - big fire, a gallon of mead and thanking the Gods for the days getting longer (after the traditional Willie Wonka watching that is)

Except gays, protestants and left handed people. A christian brother told me that in school, must be true..

No...sorry to be such a pain, but I don't "celebrate" consumerism gone mad. Neither am I religious, but respect those who are just the same.

I just let it flow over me, and celebrate on the 2nd January that it's all over again for another fekkin year.

It is just ridiculous. The car parks are full, Public Transport is heaving, it's a frenzy.

I must be a bit odd (obviously!), but I just don't understand it all just now.

If you must be consumerist, buy yer stuff in September. But wait!, the Hatchimals or whatever the latest thing is would not be available then. Drip, drip, then mad dashes to Smyths by the bewildered.

So yes.... BAH HUMBUG. But no one cares once the 25th is over really.

You forgot that they also defended us from the Jews too.

Yes, Christmas is about the family as seen in a crib with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus.
People should celebrate their family if not religious.
Then Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus is suppose to be buried in Kilkenny...because of Muslims as his body is suppose to have been brought to Ireland by the French who saw Ireland as a safe location.
All that said...I am unintentionally environmentally friendly as I can't be bothered decorating for Christmas.

    Merry holidays...

Yes, I celebrate the festival of light, gift-giving and feasting that is midwinter. After all, we've been celebrating the winter solstice for far longer than Christianity has existed.

April or September are more likely dates for the birth of the possibly real historical person, Jesus Christ.

Axial Tilt is the reason for the season!

As I said I am not really religious but If Jesus was around today I wonder what he would make of Christmas. He probably wouldn't be too into the capitalism and greed aspect of it. Some people are struggling just to keep going financially and they have this annual ritual which seems to be designed to make people spend money. I guess in the old days there wasn't as much expected
Of course the whole idea of family and giving is great and a good thing which should be encouraged

I will be celebrating christmas in the way the OP put it i.e birth of christ as I practice my religion. Each to their own and all that but I just find it so commercialized its a joke. All for one day. Cant wait for the turn of the year and the days starting to get longer

I've not celebrated the birth of Jesus since I was released from that Mexican prison.

No i didnt grow up in a house with religion so Christmas was always more about spending time with friends and family. I recall attending midnight mass once at Christmas with my granny.

For a while as a child, i had a phase where i was quite religious, probably more influenced by school but it was a positive thing for me personally at the time.

I'll be celebrating Jesus' birthday by eating lots of food, having petty arguments with my siblings about their cracker-pulling methods and watching the hour-long EastEnders misery-fest.

I'm not religious, but I usually watch midnight mass on RTE on Christmas Eve. It brings back nice memories.
