Goals For 2017?

I don't want to even catch a glimpse at my goals for 2016 so gonna move on quickly and look to the future and goals for next year.

    1)Run 2000 miles
    2)Run a Marathon PB (3:15:29)
    3)Sub 39 10k
    4)Sub 18 5k
    5)Run Interclubs XC

The most important one is the top one for me, if I can do that, it means I've got some proper consistency in my training and the others should fall into place. Not quite as ambitious as last year but really need to concentrate on making forward progress.

After a pretty underwhelming year this year (10 mins slower than planned in DCM), 1 am hoping to bounce back in 2017

    1) - Run over 1000 miles
    2) - Sub 19 5k
    3) - Sub 40 min 10k
    4) - Sub 3:20 marathon

Typed as they came to mind but actually in reverse order of importance!

    2) Get back running.
    3) Take it from there.

Third year of my back to running plan, and moving up to O50 age group. Still hope to improve on my O40 PBs if I can get through the year without injury for once.

    1) Stay injury free
    2) 5k 18:xx (PB 19:11)
    3) 10k 39:xx (PB 41:57)
    4) 10 mile 67:xx (PB 69:10)
    5) Sub 1:30 half (PB 1:37:50, don't ask!)
    6) Sub 3:30 marathon (PB 3:35 off road)

Of all these, if I can get sub 40 for the 10k I'd happily hang up my runners.

    1. 1st Marathon, Great Limerick Run, April 30th
    2. Sub 45 minute 10k
    3. Sub 22 minute 5k
    4. Run 1,000 miles

The 1st one is everything, once that is done I will shift focus to the races I ran this year just to see how far I have come.

    Don't get injured
    Don't get injured
    Don't get injured
    Don't get injured
    Don't get injured
    Don't get injured
London Marathon - just finish and enjoy it :)

(and if I've been a really good girl this year, a sub-2 half marathon at Reading in March would be really nice, 25 min 5k, 52 ish for a 10k etc...)

Get a PB - think its 2009 ? or 10 since the last one.
    Irish vest at Masters XC
    Maybe a marathon
    Do some core/conditioning work

    Goal 1: 17.30 5km (currently 17.55)

    Goal 2: Sub 37.00 10km (currently 37.45)

    And if I get a chance a 1.23 half marathon (currently 1.25.40)

1 and 2 are the big ones though.

    Sub 2:50 marathon (currently 2:57)
    Sub 36 10k (currently 37:10)
Sub 16 5k (currently 16:47 so this one's a trifle ambitious but hey)
Give a good account of myself in a few XC and IMRA races

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭gypsylee

Only started running this year so my goals for 2017 will be modest.

    1. Sub 30 min 5km (currently 31.20)
    2. Sub 60 min 10km (currently 66 mins)
    3. Complete a half-marathon in June.

Complete a full marathon is a pipe dream at the moment, will see how the half in June goes before committing to 2017. If not, definitely going to aim for the full in 2018 (for my 50th birthday!!)

One goal for me, a half marathon in 1:38.

I've managed to beat times set by my younger self in 5k, 10k and marathon, but I haven't got close to the 1:38:xx I set as a 25 year-old in Liverpool in 2000. I was running casually during the in-between years and more regularly since 2014, the closest I've come was 1:45:30 in this year's RnR Dublin Half.

I had sub 45 10k and a sub 22 5k parkrun in my sights for a while and managed those this year.

    PBs: 10k 44:12 Dunshaughlin 10k June 2016; 5k 20:56 Parkrun Sept 2016; Marathon 3:48:08 DCM Oct 2015; Half marathon 1:38:xx Liverpool Aug 2000.

So got my sub 20 for 5k this year and kept injury free, will hit 2300km and got weight down to 80kg.

    2017:

    Weight Target: 78
    10k sub 41, pb is 42:07
Half sub 1:30, pb is 1:39
    5m sub 33, pb is 33:00:mad:

    Cant see a marathon happening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,307 ✭✭✭ariana`

    In no particular order

    - run 1,000 miles
    - Sub 24:30 5km, pb is 24:53
    - Sub 2 hr half, pb is 2:09:25
    - new PBs in any other distances in between would be nice too :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

    * 5k under 25 mins
    * 10k under 55 mins
    * Run two half marathons
    * Finish a marathon

Agreed, very easy to see where the strengths and weaknesses are with those times. You should definitely consider the odd 1 mile or 3k race with that 5k time. I imagine that's where your real strength lies, not the marathon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,122 ✭✭✭Peterx

Get a regime of core strength and stretching going consistently
Gradually up the running distance, per run and per week (currently seven and zeroish)
    Complete the IMRA winter league
Slieve Donard NIMRA race - beat my age to the summit (feasible from 35 to 65 apparently)
    Win an IMRA race

Most of these goals are incremental and all are dependent upon the first one working out.

    2) subject to 1 being achieved in time. redeem myself at the 24 hrs Worlds in Belfast

Yeh I set the 10k PB early this year and didn't do another 10k since, and didn't race any HMs or marathons this year. I did do a 10 mile training run in 57:44 (with a 34'57" 10k reported by my Garmin) so I do think I have the endurance, I just didn't bother with the long races this year.

The 3:07 marathon was after a summer of injury and off the back of about 6 weeks training. It felt quite comfortable and I didn't hit "the wall" so I do think sub 2:50 is achievable but I would be happy with sub 3.

Arbitrary time goals are not for everyone, I like to have them in my head as a time to chase in a race.

    1. PB at Barcelona Marathon- preferably sub 3.10.
    2. Sub 18 min 5k(for summer time most likely).
    3. As in 2015 & 2016, stay out of the clutches of the injury demons.
    4. Anything after that will be a bonus, I'm not greedy!!
    5. Volunteer at few more races.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭Bananaleaf

    1. sub 25 5k
    2. sub 50 10k
    3. Complete my first HM. Don't mind what time I log, just doing it will be enough.
    4. Join a running club
    5. Volunteer at some races

current 5k PB is 28.07. To be honest, I only started running in April so I don't know what a realistic goal time would be, hence choosing 25mins.

    One goal.
Not to have another soul destroying, moral bashing injury at the worst possible time which I struggled to deal with mentally. Fook me it was tough....

    Sub 1:25 half (currently 1.29)

    In no particular order.
Run 2000 miles. I'll break 1600 this year so it's definitely doable
    Sub 40 10k. PB is 43 odd
    Sub 19 5k. PB is 20.43
Sub 70 10 miles. PB is 73 odd
A low 1.30 odd HM. 1.31-1.32 would be nice. PB is 1.35
Sub 3.30 Marathon. PB is 3.38
If work and family life allows me I'd love to run some IMRA races next summer.

run 10k great ireland run in april
aim for half marathon in the summer

    • About 3000 miles should be doable
    • Keep up the S&C
    • Run some middle distance in the Gradeds
    • Actually race cross country in the autumn
    • Good half marathon in the autumn (had been thinking of Athlone:( )
    • PB in something (so if you see me entering 6.2km or 11 mile races, you'll know why:D )

Just one main goal for me next year...Badwater 135
I spent 2016 getting the qualification results, so it's now or never.

Other than that it would be nice to get close to 2:40 in a marathon- current best is 2:48.

My second full year of concentrating only on running. Very enjoyable first year so hoping for more of the same in 2017.

    My goals

    1) Join a club
    2) Start and maintain a training log
    3) 10 miles sub 60 mins. January to May
    4) Cologne Marathon (October 1) PB currently 2.57.58

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,065 ✭✭✭dublin runner

Can I say this? Go on then...........:D

My goal?! My goal is to beat as many people as possible!

No written done goal times, no clock watching and no sandbagging/unrealistic arbitrary time goal pursuits. Just good old training and old racing. If I do that (+beat people that were beating me in 2015) my times will fall.

    Keepin' it simple!

I think i will aim for 60 mins as a challenge but realistically would be happy to be able to run the whole thing and not have to take walking breaks!

Came to running (as a late newb) about 3 months ago so pretty basic aims for 2017.

    Build up my strength.

Try and do about 1000-1200k over the year.

Do some decent 5 and 10k races (haven't had nerve to enter one yet :) )

    Get faster (PB 5k is 26; haven't timed a 10k yet)

In general, continue to really enjoy it and regret not starting earlier!

Get a little bit closer to my Holy Grail of a sub 4hr marathon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,448 ✭✭✭Lazare

I was a walking cliche last new years day, wandering around Elvery's buying running gear with my one4all vouchers. So this time last year my 2016 goals were to not waste my xmas bonus on dust collectors.

Thankfully I caught the bug and am a totally changed person, drinking cut back, smoking kicked for good.

My goals for 2017, now that I've a full year of running as a base are to run a race every month starting with my first ever one at the Raheny 5mile, culminating with my one main goal, Dublin City Marathon. My goal for that right now is to simply finish it, running.

I'd like to get a sub20 5k along the way too, currently at 22:15.

Overall though, I want to keep enjoying it as much as I do now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭Wottle

To stay consistent but not to become all consumed by it.

Be able to run more with the juveniles in the club (depends a lot on the above).

Would love to get back under 20 for 5k by April, have no idea where I'm at right now, will know more next Saturday.

    That'll do for now

2016 was my first year taking running semi serious.

    Goals for 2017
    1. Join a club
    2. Be more consistent with stretching and foam rolling
    3. Sub 22 min 5K (PB 22:48) Dream to go sub 20!
    4. Sub 45 min 10K (PB 47:30)
    5. Sub 1hr 45 min HM
    6. Run a marathon!
