Ahh Sherlof, glad to see you again. Sending you lots of positive vibes! Hopefully you'll have a few more folk join your group soon.

Hi Sherlof3, ill join ya! Just found out that we finally have a wee one on the way, too :)
    let the adventures begin.
Also just 4 weeks now so still early days. Hopefully both of ours will stick.

Hey guys. First time father to be here. We only found out today and are in the third week. My nerves are completely gone! Don't know how I'm gping to make it through the weeks before the first scan. We were having trouble conceiving and it turned out I have a really low sperm count. So naturally I was feeling responsible that we couldn't conceive on our own and we were in the process of looking into IVF. We were still trying as we were told there was a chance of conceiving naturally but that we would have to be rather lucky. All of a sudden the misses hands me a positive test wrapped as a present!! We did two more of the clear blue tests an all three said pregnant. We worked out a due date of Aug 25th or thereabouts.

Congrats both Tinylion and Don Corleone! Very exciting!! I did the early Christmas present thing too! Have you thought about an early scan? I'm only about 5.5 weeks but have an early scan on Thursday in the Rotunda, let's hope all are sticky!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Tinylion

Wow. I didnt even know such early scans existed, good luck!
I didnt even think to do it as a present. To be honest, we were both temperature charting, so once i got past my usual luteal phase lenght we knew we had a chance. Though seeing the second line on the test was wonderful :D
Its really weird to think only us two and my dentist know in real life. We re probably waiting till after the first intake with the midwife at 8-10 weeks to tell everyone.
Any symptoms yet? Im feeling really normal and only the occasional tender boob makes me remember its actually happening :) which is good since i woudnt know how to hide more obvious symptoms from my family for the christmas week.
We re due 20th of August, so it ll hopefully be the summer baby i always wanted

Yea I've already been looking into the early scan as far as I make out if your willing to pay you can get one done before eight weeks? I know someone who got one at 6 weeks so that's what we are hoping to do. The peace of mind will be worth its weight in gold whatever the cost. In the meantime I'll just be following this thread to keep me occupied :-)

Tinylion usual first appointment with midwife is at 12 weeks, early scans are usually private and done from 8 weeks, sometimes 7, unless there is a reason why it would be done earlier. Apologies if you already know this and will be seeing midwife early for a reason!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭catrionanic

We had an early scan at 6 weeks and all we saw was the yolk sac. Too early to see the baby. If you can wait another couple of weeks and go at 8 weeks then you'll see much more (and most importantly, that precious little heartbeat!). This was our experience, anyway. I wouldn't waste the money on such an early scan myself now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭Sherlof3

Yes not expecting to see much tomorrow, but had a MC in May so my doctor asked us to come in ASAP after the BFP. Will go back again after Christmas for an actual early scan. Fingers crossed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭don corleone

My thoughts would be to get 6 week scan just to know if everything is as it should be. If so I could wait until the 12 week scan to get  a proper image of the baby.

Can I ask if anyone knows about any of the risks involved in flying while pregnant. Ive googled it 100s of times and it seems to be that its a personal choice for the mother unless she is too far along and the airline fear her going into labor prematurely. Has anyone heard from their doctor if it is a risk at all to fly in the first trimester?

Nearly all experts and doctors say it's absolutely fine, however natural fertility specialist says not to chance it. https://www.herfamily.ie/pregnancy/flying-youre-pregnant-wait-12-weeks/220525

Hi everyone! Nervously joining you as I had a MC in October. Completely shocked to be pregnant so soon after it was preparing for it to take months. Think I'm only about 4.5 weeks and due around August 25th!
It's strange I'm extremely excited but so terrified too. Anyone got any strategies for keeping this a secret during Christmas? The other half as generously offered to drink my drinks too :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Tinylion

Hi Meubles :) welcome to the club.
Ill press my thumbs your little one sticks too.

Im also struggling with the hiding, and we have both sets of parents staying for an extended period of time, so that will be interesting.

Could you maybe say you are the designated driver if you have to travel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Meubles

    Thanks Tinylion!
Oh no it's tough hiding isn't it? I don't mind if they guess really but prefer to let us tell them in our own time. We will be staying with the in laws for 3 days so I've no clue how to hide it. Probably will come down with a mystery illness!
Anyone got any symptoms yet? My boobs are pretty sore and think I'm feeling some mild nausea today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 243 ✭✭starface

I had nasuea Saturday to yesterday but it seems to have relaxed now. Anyone else extremely tired? I don't know it it's the pregnancy or the run up to Christmas but I'm so tired. I keep doing really silly things.

I'm just over four weeks. Should I book an appointment with my Gp yet? My sister said the GP doesn't want to see you that soon.

This is my first time to be pregnant and although we were planning to get pregnant we kinda thought we'd have a few months to ease into it. We're pretty shocked to be pregnant so soon and very scared. I am so terrified something will go wrong. I feel like I can't even be really excited I'm so worried.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Meubles

Starface - I'm also really tired, slept for 8 hours last night and it feels like 3! Not sure about the GP, this is also my first baby and I live in the Netherlands so the system is different here. I have booked my first appointment which is at 9 weeks and then scan at 10 weeks. But trying to just take it day and day after the mc. I think I will get properly excited after the scan at end of January.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Tinylion

Meubles - this is crazy, we re also in the Netherlands! The world is too small. I should really go and book myself into the midwife clinic but somehow that makes it way more real i think.

Starface, i think the exhaustion is real. Sleeping 8-10hrs at night with an evening nap and still falling asleep at my desk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Meubles

Tinylion - You are kidding! We are in Amsterdam how about you? How nice to have another mum to be navigating the Dutch system. Yea it felt weird calling the midwife I feel like I'm tempting fate, but it seems they fill up fast so I got the last evening spot for a scan that week. Have a work party tomorrow night hopefully I can stay awake for it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Tinylion

Meubles- we re in the hague, so not too far away :) yea im glad someone else will be going through the Dutch system. Seems very different from the irish one and i dont want to ask my friends with kids here since its still so early on.

Sure i find parties arent sooo bad to survive, and at least you can leave relatively easy.

We are also due in August 2017. Bit confused about the dates as first day of last period was 12th November, but when we use online calculator it is putting us at 5.5 weeks now (will be six weeks Saturday)
Is that right? We are trying to judge when to go for a scan
Really don't know how we are going to hide this over Christmas, feel so giddy walking around with such a big secret that nobody knows about except for us

We had early scan today at 6 weeks & 3 days as we had fertility treatment.

Could see the baby (tiny) and heartbeat, was amazing.

Lady doing scan did say that at this stage usually can't see heartbeat but was great xmas present

So excited to be posting here...... I've just taken a test 2 hours ago and got a positive!!!! I haven't told a single soul yet as I won't see my partner until tomorrow and I want to tell him in person!!! I'm either end Aug/start Sept ahhhhh I can't even believe I'm saying this sooooooo exciting

So we had a little scare at this early stage. Want to post it up here incase anyone else faces the same thing on their journey. Being our first pregnancy we found ourselves researching other people's stories a lot so this might help someone.

So my partner experienced some light bleeding on Christmas eve morning. I was woken up by her in a panic and needless to say we feared the worst. So down to the emergency department we went to check that everything was OK. The nurse said she wanted to do a scan to see what was happening but told us at 6 weeks it was probable we wouldn't see anything yet and not to panic. I had been doing my research and I knew at this stage their could be a heartbeat so I wasn't buying the whole "don't worry if you see nothing " Anywyas We got a scan and all we could see was the gestation sac and nothing else. The nurse again assured us that this could be perfectly normal. The sac was measuring perfect at 6 weeks so we took some comfort from that. It was also in the womb and ruled out ectopic pregnancy. The nurse said she was happy enough with what she seen but that to be sure she wanted to monitor her HCG levels. Apparently this should double every 48 hours during a normal pregnancy. The nurse took bloods Xmas eve and we went back in on Stephens day to give the next sample. Two days after this (yesterday) we got a call saying the HCG level was not rising as high as they would like. They measured 9900 on Stephens day and then 15000 48 hours later. A rise of a little over 50%. They took another sample yesterday and it had rose to 22000 from 15000 in 48 hours. Again, rose steadily but hadn't doubled. They stop doing the scans at 4pm which meant an overnight stay for her while we waited to have the scan this morning. I spent the night googling the numbers and symptoms, this i found is almost the worst thing you can do as you will be almost more confused then you started. If ive learnt anything its that the early stages of pregnancy are a waiting game and that everybody is different.

They took her down first thing today for the scan and low and behold there was a tiny baby and a healthy heartbeat! I can't even explain the relief. Still a long road ahead but we are grateful to be still moving in the right direction at this point. Bearing in mind that 5 days ago a scan showed up an empty sac and today there was a yolk sac and baby with heartbeat, 5 days later, will show you how quickly things can change between scans. Apparently the bleeding is called implantation bleeding and is completely normal in some pregencies.

The moral of the story is don't believe everything you might read. There are no experts. No matter what all the signs point to there is still every chance that everything is fine. Just have to wait it out and trust nature to do its job for you.

I hope this will help if someone finds themselves with similar symptoms and is worried.

Hey don corleone, thank you for sharing your little scare, and im so glad it worked out alright for you two!
I think overall this happens to a lot of women, i also had a tiny amout of bleeding and called my doctor in a panic, and they said basically its a 50/50 chance everything goes alright. So ill keep my thumbs pressed for all of us over the next few weeks.
We have a scan booked for next friday, i think after that ill be much more relaxed as the percentages of something going wrong drop considerably after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 216 ✭✭Cork2015!

We had a scan yesterday due to bleeding also. We were almost 7 weeks but sonographer said size wise it wasn't measuring that much so she said we must be just about 6 weeks but we did see a little heartbeat so thats reassuring.
I am just wondering now if it being so small means something is wrong

Most commonly it just indicates that you ovulated a few days later than you thought you did

    Hello!

Happy to be joining you all in this thread! Our little baby is due on August 14th <3 Like a few others I'm living abroad and navigating a system I know nothing about. Although, being my first pregnancy I feel like I know nothing at all anyway.

I had a scare yesterday as I woke up with some light pink bleeding which progressed to a dark brown throughout the day. I was so upset and stressed. We went to a private hospital and I had a transvaginal ultrasound which showed us the heartbeat :) The doctor said there was nothing wrong with the pregnancy and that we could relax. Apparently 1 in 4 spot or bleed at some point during the pregnancy.

We had the pregnancy confirmed by my Irish GP during the Christmas break and we're booking a 10 week scan once we find a maternity hospital. Is there anything else we should be doing? I know nothing about HCG levels?

I've been feeling tired with back pain and headaches, anybody else experiencing symptoms?

I'm so happy! Congrats to everyone :)

    Congrats to you too!

The HCG levels I wouldn't worry about. They are often used as a sign for an impending miscarriage. They dont monitor them unless something else happens, ie severe cramping, bleeding etc... I think in the states women monitor their levels themselves but theres a general outlook that by doing so you will only worry yourself needlessly if the numbers are not the standard. For example, the levels should double every 48 hours so any varying from this will cause people to worry. In our case our levels were not doubling but we still saw a healthy heartbeat.

I'm very early days yet, could be 5 weeks tomorrow so would be September rather than August - have to wait until next week to see my GP as she's on leave and I don't want to go to a different doctor. I am getting some cramping though, feeling a bit on the tired side and some back pain (which my boyfriend reckons I have to be imagining this early!). Also my boobs have got bigger already!

Hoping to book an early scan once I've seen GP and will need to decide on hospital too - in Dublin so will be going to Coombe or Holles St, anyone know do they have catchment areas or can you just pick?!

It's your decision, whichever hospital will suit you best for appointments etc. There are specified catchment areas if you want to do the Domino scheme which is midwife led care. They are listed on the hospital websites. Domino is offered to public patients who live in certain areas; if you are outside these areas or want regular public care or semi private or private care then the hospital choice is down to you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭catrionanic

And just to add, if you do want to go on the domino scheme (which a midwife in Holles st recently told me is the best... particularly for aftercare as a midwife will visit you at home every day for the first 5 days), then you need to get on to them pretty much as soon as you get your positive pregnancy test!

I waited until I was 11 weeks and it was too late then

Congrats :) I'm a little behind you. Did an early test and it's positive. Not due my period for a few days but we've been trying and I had a 'feeling'.

Light cramping, sore boobs, tiredness, thirsty a lot and weeing a lot. Also, I'm not quite sure what I want to eat... But I KNOW I want to eat it.

    Fingers crossed :)

Thanks for the info everyone I'm kinda leaning towards the Coombe but I'm in the catchment area for Holles St domino scheme so I'm not sure what I'll do but will talk to my GP during the week. So excited to get it all confirmed with her!

So far managed to keep it quiet from everyone but have a night out on Saturday and I'm hoping no one says anything because I don't want to deny it, think I'll be claiming I'm doing dry January although someone is bound to guess!

Hi All, Congrats on everyones BFPs!! I'm due August 17th, my first so equally terrified and excited! :-)
Just wondering if anyone is suffering from morning sickness (though it should be called all day sickness)? I haven't really been tired, not that I've noticed but I have mild to medium nausea 100% of the time, it's my third week of it and it's beginning to really annoy me :-) i've tried ginger and ginger nut biscuits but I really don't think it works aside from a slight sugar buzz off the biscuits? Any advice / suggestions would be fantastic! :-)

Congrats Mouseylocks! I am defo nauseous all day! I only get relief when I eat a big meal of carbs like pasta! I find plain vanilla ice cream, 7up, gin gin ginger sweets from the health food shop and ginger tea all help. Waking up every night at 3.30am and unable to get back to sleep til 7 so finding work tough and looking forward to sleep all weekend!

Where are you going to? :)

I'll def try the ginger sweets, I'm not sure how much ginger is in the biscuits it could be more ginger flavoured than actual ginger :-) I also hadn't thought of 7up and considering that's an Irish institution when you're sick I should have :-) thanks!!

I'm going to Limerick maternity, haven't got any letter/appointment or anything though. I have my second appointment at my GPs week after next (i'll be almost 10weeks then) so I assume i'll get my appointment soon. Where are you going to?

I had constant nausea until 21/22 weeks. I couldn't really get any relief from it, and found the ginger stuff no use. Only things that helped were eating little and often - nausea got so much worse on an empty stomach - and also I found some relief when I drank ice cold fruity drinks and sucked on fruity boiled sweets.

Nausea eventually disappeared but then returned again at 27 weeks and I'm now 38 weeks and still have it. Thankfully it isn't constant or as severe as it was on the first trimester, so is much more tolerable.

God I really hope that mine doesn't last that long!! thanks for the suggestions, think I'm going to visit Tesco tonight after work and stock up on everyone's suggestions, if even one worked that would be great!! although I should be grateful as I could be worse I haven't gotten sick or anything! #positivethinking!

They do! A friend of mine had her baby in December and got one, they're very cute and you get a few bits with them aswell! I'm the same as yourself totally clueless but excited! I'm hoping once I get over the first trimester and can let people know then all my friends with children will impart all their worldly baby information and tips and i'll be sorted! :-)

Is anyone more nauseous after eating? Mine comes and goes throughout the day but gets worst after eating.

I also have a lot of cramping throughout the day (like period pains). No bleeding at all so I'm not too worried but they can be sore. Don't last very long though at all.

I know you're not meant to have a bath but I felt so sick today I got one (not very hot). It was so relaxing!

I had terrible sickness on my first up to 20 weeks, ended up in hospital few times. Sucking on a hard sweet gave me relief the odd time or if i ate something starchy like mcdonalds chips.
I have had no sickness this time so im a bit worried

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭Meubles

Starface I'm the very same, I feel sick after eating and it's always worse in the evening. Ginger tea has been helping but not always,I read that drinking a lot of water helps too but I'm not convinced. I was so hungry last week was eating all around me, trying to be a bit more careful this week but I've an hour bike ride every day for work and feel like it's making it worse! Having a lot of pinches and aches today I'm assuming this is just stuff stretching inside? Have first midwife appointment next week so can get all my answers!!

Yeah I was so hungry last week too. Nearly died when I weighted myself. Loss of appetite kicked in over the weekend.

Fair play to you cycling - I'm so tired after work I'm struggling to do any exercise. I'm really conscious of putting on weight too early. I don't mind putting on weight for the baby. I just don't want to put on unnecessary weight.

How come you are getting in to see the midwife so early? Are you going private? I found out last week that Wexford don't offer a scan until 20 weeks so I have to wait a long time before I see anyone but my doctor.

I have a feeling I'm having twins too - sounds completely insane I know but it's just a feeling. I don't mind either way.

Not sure how long the cycling will last! I live in Holland so it's the normal way to get about! Also the system here is intake around week 8 for blood tests and history then first scan at 10 weeks and I think again somewhere between 12 and 16 for gender scan which I definitely want to do. So tired today already :/

Starface would you consider a private scan? We went for an early private scan on our first at about 8 weeks and it gave us great reassurance to see the little heartbeat. This time around we were going to do the same again but due to a bleed I ended up having a scan in the Early Pregnancy Unit and have another one as a follow up next week so we didn't need to book a private one in the end.
If I remember right it was about €120 and I got half back from my health insurance.
I do feel that 20 weeks is a very very long wait, sure we will probably be feeling kicks by then.
As far as I remember the first standard scan in CUMH was at 12 weeks but that was two years ago now so that may have changed to longer.
My friend was up for her routine scan last week and she had to take a number when she got there and she was number 325, when they called the next number it was number 90... she was up there waiting for 6 hours!!

Wow thats a seriously ridiculous time to wait.

We ve finally had our intake with the midwife clinic here in the Netherlands and as a "gift" they did an ultrasound. So amazing to see that little heart beating. It was quite early at 8weeks so have to wait another 3 till the 11 week scan where they will get a more accutate due date.
@Meubles its funny that even within the Netherlands there is so many different standards!
