Ed is now on graveyard shift duty, 10pm to midnight; 10 to 1am on Sundays. Paul McLoone is gone gone.

I always thought in radio land at least, that the graveyard shift was between 12 midnight and 6am.
Like in the old days of 2FM where there would be LIVE presenters!!

They will in a couple of months after playing it so much everyone hates it. Then they'll find another song to murder for three months

That Jason Durillo (sp?) song, that Harry Styles "Watermelon Sugar" song, Bieber and D'espacito... Beware, I heard Ed Sheeran has a new album on the way.

Even the presenters mentioned how often Watermelon Sugar was played.

Liking Ed's new show, if only it was on at 7 to keep Paul on too

I always wonder just how much input a dj actually has in song selection on Radio?

Can they play a few songs they like, or are they tied to a playlist?

The repetition of songs on Irish radio during the day is shocking.

I think they have a little bit of leeway. I remember Louise Duffy being first to introduce songs on Irish radio like Christine and the Queens. Maybe they're so caught up on content creation there's little effort being put into the playlist

It seems to be the same sh!te repetitive music across most stations, I've switched to local radio stations where the playlists seem to have more freedom with playing 70s - 00s with a bit of modern stuff thrown in

    None.

Programming manager will do the majority of the picks.

As Claude says, none. Or on Today FM at least, that was the case until 7pm, when Ed's show used to start. Sure, there was some more mainstream stuff for the first hour, but that slowly faded and later in the show it was all Ed. Louise Duffy used to have that slot (it's still what comes up on my Google Hub!) so would have had some leeway too.

Pamela Joyce's music seems to be pure algorithm choice music - though apparently it's requests she's getting? Frankly, I'm amazed that all of her listeners aren't going "wait, what? We used to hear indie, alternative and rock at this time, so no, I'm still going to request R.E.M., not Jason ****ing Durillo!"

Apart from that, it seems presenters pick literally one song between 7 and 10, and that's the Cheese or Cracker song on Dermot and Dave.

Even Ian Dempsey playing Bowie every so often is a thing of the past.

Now i do believe Ferg Darcy has something there with promoting Irish artists but then again i don't know if he's just presented with them and has to act all excited.

Mainstream radio is dead. The old days of the pirates and a presenter actually moulding a playlist are a thing of the past outside specialist evening and weekend shows.

Back when Willie O'Reilly was running Today FM , many shows were ran like independent Republics so Dempsey, Darcy, Foley And Fenton (& their team) would have been completely free to alter the playlist as they saw fit, since the mid 2010s the 5am/4:30pm presenters don't even have the facility to change the mucic

In the main, I'm not too bothered with the music during weekdays daytime. I really enjoy D&D and Mairéad's shows, Ferg D'arcy can be hit or miss depending on what his "D'ye remember..." topic-of-the-day is, and they're grand to have on in the background during work, but come 7 I want decent music.

I'm experimenting with Nova (Greg Gaughran still on the go!) - it's fine, but "safe", and I don't think I'll be hearing any new music on it? And John Creedon on RTÉ, who is wonderfully eclectic but who doesn't start until 8 and who might have a theme I'm just not into. It does have the advantage of finishing at 10 so I can switch back over to Ed!

She was doing the afternoon slot then. Mairead Ronan played a Miley Cyrus song lately just to reference her stint on dancing with the stars. Other than that I'd say they leave it to the computer

Who is filling in for Jessica today? It's all very LOUD!

  • Registered Users Posts: 231 ✭✭Snorlaxx

Does Anyone know the ratings for Ed's show for the old time vs the new?
Spoken to a few people who havent listened since slot change, they may be the few rather than the majority of course.

First song after 7 this evening was watermelon sugar. Someone said earlier in this thread when you turn on today fm you should disengage your brain. Spot on!

They're only released every 3 months, I think. If you search the thread for JNLR you'll get the most recent figures, but they're old. It'll be a while until we get ones for the new slots.

Was driving this evening & I would automatically tune into Ed at 7pm - but alas I don't want to listen to the usual playlist day time music.
Its such a shame they moved him or he chose to move

I missed yesterday mornings classic 9 at 11, I saw on Twitter that Phil was back doing it this week (Jessica must have had the weekend off) - I haven't listened to that show either since they took Phil off that slot too.

I wonder do the heads in these radio stations know their demographic - who actually listen to the radio. I hate to call myself middle aged but I am & I listen to radio & thus the advertisers. I also am an active radio listener who will switch stations and not just listen to the same station from morning to night - in the car, office or around the house. I hear the ads & am someone who will purchase the products but I refuse to listen to the same 10 songs over & over again.

The time I give to TodayFM is diminishing rapidly - but I am just one listener, so I am not naive enough to realise that they will die without my ears :D

The ad agancys have always wanted the 18-35 market, their logic is that a "middle-aged" person isn't going to change now from coke to pepsi

Biggest mistake ever - I loved the way he interviewed people, you never knew which side of the fence he was on with some interviews, it was great a real pro at communications (it wasn't off the ground he licked it) :D

Interesting that Anton returns to Marconi house just weeks after Communicorp leave. I presume whatever directors he was on bad terms with have left the building.
