    Big event here every year picking periwinkles. Hard work and I hated them.
    I can still remember picking periwinkles at the beach but I can't say if I ever ate them or not. I was a squeamish kid :D

    We ate them when we picked them, opened cockles with another cockle and picked out periwinkle with a pin we always carried to the beach. :D
    I hated them cooked though, I don't know how we were never poisoned :pac:

    Sure oysters are a delicacy, same thing really only not as accessible and more expensive!

    Suet from the butcher was melted down and the lard fat poured into a pudding bowl to set. A chunk was broken of as needed. Melted in a large pot. Chips fried and scooped out with a slotted spoon. A house fire waiting to happen.
    We never had frytex, everything in the early 90s was cooked in the deep fat fryer. Jesus when I think of it now, so unhealthy.

    Do ye remember buying the cold meats by the slice in the shop and that big slicing machine?It's a shame they don't do it now because I dump a load of the packet slices now after using one or two slices.

    I used to be sent to the shop usually for about 8 slices of cornbeef if unexpected visitors arrived,pork onion and tomato if it was a "poor"day and ham if we were unexpectedly flush.

    Cold meat was like the staple of all meals (sandwiches) for years. I had to use one of those machines in work and was freaked I'd lose my hand or something. I don't know do many kitchens have them anymore.

    We used to do toast over the open fire and the mushrooms on top of the stove. I'm only in my early 30s so not that old :D

    We also used to eat a lot of game and fish. Meat like cows tongue and heart. It's how they managed at the time.

    Just had an Edam and tomato sandwich and a handful of peanuts. Washed down with a glass of white wine.

    Stuffed Cows heart in the 80's. Loved it! Imagine asking your butcher for it now.:eek:

    I'm not in the country, but there's a little corner shop nearby, and they have a thriving business, all the workers go in for their filled rolls and stuff, all the meat cut while they're there. I often ask in Super Value to have it cut fresh too. :)

    Our walk this morning took us past the bakery. So, coffee and an apple & cream donut.

    At a market stall in my childhood home town, there was a sigh where we queued for freshly cut bacon etc.... "WILL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOT LEAN AGAINST THE MACHINE AS WE ARE GETTING A LITTLE BEHIND WITH OUR ORDERS"

    We had a proper toasting fork; sadly it vanished on one of my too many moves...

    Here on the island, they pick winkles and each family has a huge white bucket for mussels... They do not appeal to me but would love some of the mackerel they catch....

    Next task is to learn which seaweed is edible and beneficial. They harvest it here and along the West Coast

    Meanwhile it is the gathering time for blackberries which are in huge abundance and just coming into fullness, and rose hips. Intending a healthy home preserved winter.

    I've been told that in theory all seaweed is edible... but not sure I'd want to test that theory out.
    Dillisk, carrageen moss, bladderwrack, kelp, sea lettuce are all edible. Only take were there is no pollution, and don't take the root as they will regrow.

    Yesterday's leftover quinoa with yesterday's leftover ratatouille. Topped with Edam cheese and reheated. Delicious!
