Having seen 3 of these, Hell or High Water, Loving and then Sully, dont see Loving or Sully as contenders and while I thought Hell or High Water was excellent, it didnt strike me as being something that was looking at being an oscar contender, dont these films usually canvass for these awards and save the release for late Winter/Early Spring

Loving is 16/1 with Boyles and i'd agree its a longshot. La La Land is odds on favourite so im thinking maybe Manchester by the Sea is value at 5/1? or Does Hell or High Water have a shot?

Would someone be able to put up a screenshot of the odds? Always a bit of value to be found somewhere

I thought Joel and Ruth were pretty much acting nomination locks for Loving and Hanks too for Sully and think with Best Picture category expanded to 8 or 10 both films could get in

Moonlight and Lion another two films generating buzz

i expect tom to get a nomination for sully but it wont win any fairly average film

Sorry, i meant i didnt see Sully or Loving as being Best Picture winners. nominations sure but not winners. Also doubt that any of them win an individual award, but nominations sure

I'm kind of surprised that Hell or High Water is an Oscar contender. It's a good movie, but seemed a bit throwaway to me.

It is about the feeling of disenfranchisement felt by the rural parts of the US. It's very topical, which has given it a boost.

If the Academy is made up of the same people as a lot of Trump supporters, its got a great chance

Casey Affleck for Best Actor, Viola Davis for Best supporting Actresses and Damien Chazelle for Best Director look right now to be dead certs. Best actress Nathalie Portman and Isabelle Huppert seem the two favourites but it isn't a great year to be honest, hope Huppert wins though. Elle though so far looks Favourite for Best Foreign Film. Moonlight and La La Land look to be the two battling for Best Picture but wouldn't surprise me to see another film sneak up near the run in to blow the race wide open.

This years Oscars could be the most wide open for a few awards in the last few years.

If Emma Stone wins the SAG for best actress, I think she will take the Oscar also

No Aaron Taylor Johnson For Best supporting actor for Nocturnal Animals, although Michael Shannon was awesome in it too. No shock with Streep although I don't think she's deserving this year. Great to see Ruth Negga get a nod although I wasn't a massive fan of Loving, don't see her winning though. I think Casey Affleck is definitely getting best actor and Viola Davis to for Supporting actress. Hell or High Water getting a few nods is nice although I think Ben Foster is more deserving then Jeff Bridges for Supporting Actor from the film. Luke Hedges getting best supporting actor nod was nice too.

I think it's between Moonlight or La La Land for Film and Director awards.

Amy Adams nothing for Nocturnal Animals or Arrival

    -cynical hat on-

I wonder how many of the actors were nominated purely because of the colour of their skin, with the controversy that last year's Oscars caused.

Seems very odd to have Dev Patel as a supporting actor, given that Lion is supposedly all about his character.

true but 2016 was a weak year for quality overall so that's one of the reasons that it got so many - it has a broad appeal across the oscar categories with it being a musical etc also

I would love to see Viggo Mortensen win best actor i remember watching captain fantastic and saying he should get an oscar for this he was excellent in it.

I would love to see Viggo Mortensen win best actor i remember watching captain fantastic and saying he should get an oscar for this he was excellent in it.

He's fantastic in it as is George Mackay as his oldest son. Very underrated film. But I think he's just unlucky this year cause Casey Affleck is unbeatable for me, I think Andrew Garfield is the closet in that category to give Affleck a run. He's awesome in Hacksaw Ridge, also in Silence too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Frank O. Pinion

I've only seen Hell or High Water, from the Best Picture nominees, good film, but not something I would consider an Oscar contender. Speaks for the overall poor year for films in 2016, I guess.

I really hope The Lobster wins Best Original Screenplay, fantastic film. Should have gotten a Best Picture nomination in my opinion, especially since there's only nine, of a possible ten.

Surprised Hail, Caesar! didn't get more love.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,190 ✭✭✭✭IvySlayer

Sing Street deserved a nomination. Fences should not have been given adapted screenplay nod. Give it to Deadpool.

Amy Adams also deserved a nomination, Arrival best movie this year.

Of the five films I've seen from the best picture list, Hell or High Water is by far the least interesting. Cannot even compete with the beautifully crafted likes of Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea. But I've said before it's an unusually strong year, and the three frontrunners (the aforementioned two and La La Land) are all the rare kind of awards-contenders - legitimately passionate, genuine and characterful. As usual a few bizarre oversights and disappointments (there should almost be a special double nomination for Pablo Larrain given he delivered the one-two punch of Neruda and Jackie) because it is the Academy after all. Still, definitely a few well above mere Oscar-bait standard on this year's shortlist.

I've only seen three of the Best Picture Nominees so far, a situation I hope to rectify quite soon. But, so far, all I can say for sure is that for me Manchester By The Sea will take some beating.

Seems very odd to have Dev Patel as a supporting actor, given that Lion is supposedly all about his character.
Patel also got Best Supporting Actor nominations, from AACTA International Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Houston Film Critics Society, Satellite Awards, and St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association. The producers thought he had a better chance of winning supporting, than lead. Also, I've read he's only in the second half of the film, I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if that's true.

Patel wouldn’t have been nominated had he been put forward for lead.

Adams seems to have cancelled herself out which is a shame.

Strange to see Land of Mine in the foreign language nominees. I saw at last year’s DIFF. It came out in Denmark in 2015.

And what’s up with the Makeup category?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,032 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    Best documentary
    Fire at Sea
    I Am Not Your Negro
    Life, Animated
    OJ: Made in America
    13th

    Best foreign language film
    Land of Mine
    A Man Called Ove
    The Salesman
    Tanna
    Toni Erdmann

I thought Elle would make it in considering lead actress Isabelle Huppert did

Happens a lot. Studios campaign towards whichever category they feel they have a better chance of securing a nomination or win. The producers of Lion must have thought either Gosling or Affleck had the Best Actor award sewn up and thought Patel stood a better chance in the Supporting category.

Academy rules state: “A performance by an actor or actress in any role shall be eligible for nomination either for the leading role or supporting role categories.”

Harvey Weinstein, who is an exec producer on Lion, is a master at this sort of thing.

Casey Affleck absolutely deserves best actor for a gut wrenchingly haunting performance in Manchester by the Sea. The sort of film that stays with you long after the credits roll - that scene in the police station is up there for me with the likes of the opening scene of Irreversible.
