A rather quiet Christmas (and extremely disappointing if I might add) here at Grange with a fresh breeze but nothing out of the ordinary. A downpour around the early afternoon with some scattered sunny spells but mostly cloudy.

Grange's December 2016 summary

Dry, sunny and mild.

Rainfall: Much drier than December 2015 but not one of the driest on record.
I recorded a rainfall total of 33.3mm (53% of the LTA) during December 2016. This was in huge contrast with December 2015 which recorded 210.8mm (335% of the LTA) and was my wettest month on record. This meant that December 2016 was 177.5mm short of December 2015's total. Despite this huge contrast and the % of the LTA rainfall, December 2016 was not one of my driest Decembers on record with 2001 and 2010 in particular being much drier. I recorded my highest daily rainfall of 10.4mm on the 14th but there was no other days during the month with 10mm of rainfall or more. This was another huge contrast with December 2015 which recorded 6-8 such days (and 2 days over 30mm!). I recorded a total of 10 wet days (days with 0.1mm or more of rainfall) which was below normal for December of 15-17 wet days and this was of huge contrast to December 2015 which recorded 26 wet days. This meant that December 2016 recorded 21 dry days (days with 0mm of rainfall) which equaled with 2001 for the highest number of dry days in December. December 2016 may sure have not been one of my driest Decembers on record but it sure was a very memorably dry December here at Grange with an abnormal quantity of dry days.

Temperature: 3rd mildest December on record despite the dry conditions.
I recorded a mean temperature of 6.3c (+1.8c above the LTA) during December which made it the third mildest on record here at Grange with 2015 and 1988 warmer. This was very shocking given the anticyclonic conditions during December as Winter months normally with anticyclonic conditions are cold. December 2016 was a huge exception and was the second successful exceptionally mild December in a row. December 2016 was a very funny Winter month as a result with temperatures rather cold at the very beginning. I recorded my minimum temperature of -4.3c for the month on the 1st. However, this was soon replaced by a milder spell with the 7th recording a maximum temperature of 15.5c and a minimum temperature of 11.1c, making it my third warmest December day on record behind only the 1st and 19th of 2015. Until the 26th, there was very temporary cold days but mostly rather mild days though not remarkable like those in 2015 or the 6th and 7th earlier in the month. Then it was rather cold until the 29th in which relatively mild air took over again. December 2016 turned out very mild overall then but was -2.2c cooler than December 2015 and only -0.2c cooler than December 1988.

Sunshine: Sunnier than normal but nothing remarkable.
I recorded a sunshine total of 66 hours (116% of the LTA) but this was not remarkable as there have been a lot more Decembers sunnier and duller than December 2016. My sunniest day for December was the 1st with 7.1 hours and was one of my sunniest December days on record. My second sunniest day took place unusually late in the month on the 28th with 6.6 hours. After the 1st day, the first half (1st-15th) was very dull overall with a total of only 20 hours recorded. This meant that the second half (16th-31st) recorded 46 hours, so as you can see, sunshine was unevenly divided during December. December 2016 was a nice month for sunshine here at Grange but in my opinion, it is very forgettable.

December 2016 may have been an extremely disappointing Winter month given how mild it was despite the anticyclonic conditions but it sure wasn't a poor month by any means. Like despite the disappointment given the fact that it was a Winter month, I liked December 2016 and it was a very pleasant month at Grange.
