They gave some bizarre answer on Facebook saying they can't run under trees, and through Farmleigh

I run in newbridge quite often , I'd be really interested in seeing the course , no shortage of trees down there either..

Looks like the Irish Runner will be holding their own 5m event on June 24th (according to Race Series FB page)

Based on visiting Newbridge House for 'Flavours of Fingal' in summer, it's a top location with plenty of grounds for parking etc. Really looking forward to the details.

Agreed its grand for parking it's the running bit I'm interested in. Can't wait to see the route. There are only 2 roads into Donabate/Portrane , I can't see the locals being happy tbh.

I'm asuming it has to be on the roads around the park as there is very little roadway in the park itself.

Really strange decision, why not do outside the park partially like RnR do.

I fear if this is the beginning of the end for the series, donabate isn't central or easily accessible by public transport so I would expect numbers to be down big time. Hope I'm wrong

Who'd be a race organiser eh?

Within 24 hours of announcing race, with no details about the actual course, you have people moaning.

Not to mention that awful phrase "hope I'm wrong."

And the mad thing is people are asking why they're aren't more like RnR. Such short memories.

I'm not moaning, I live and work in the area and as such am very familiar with the geography out here, I'm just wondering how they are going to get it to work.

Farmleigh not being open cuts down on the possible routes. Perhaps not allowed run on the paths under trees, eg, the path along Chesterfield avenue?

The OPW control the use of the park for events, and they take a hard line sometimes. Maybe there were too many restrictions this year for any routes to be workable, particularly with the numbers involved and the difference between the people at the front and back (which limits how much you can reuse the same roads)

They've done a great job over the years with the Race Series but the whole thing had become a bit stale in my opinion, particularly having two races in the Park in the space of a month. Hopefully this new format will freshen it up a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,536 ✭✭✭The Davestator

There's a train station at the entrance to the park too so public transport is not an issue. Obviously not the number of options that the PP has but still not a problem to get to.

Anything for a change to the Phoenix Park!

I'm sure people would love if they charged the RnR prices too. What was it last year? €55 for an uphill half marathon?

€50 for the 3 events is unreal value.

The Dublin race series is the best value for races in Ireland by a mile.
I cannot fault or complain about any of the events I have gone to and I have been at them all for the past few years.
20 euro for a half marathon is excellent value , you wouldn't get it anywhere else.

I look forward to getting out of the phoenix park for a change, the same slog in there gets boring !

I look forward to giving them a shot next year again .

Just a note to let you know that the Half Marathon will be on the Sunday 24th and not Saturday 23rd.
Just out this morning driving the route and we are nearly at the stage where we can do an exact measurement.
The start / finish venue itself has staged other major events and is ideal for an athletes village set up with plenty of free parking.

Is it a flat course ?

Is it a flat course ?

Is there such a thing :)
The highest point is at the 10k mark and it's downhill from there. Bear in mind that the course has yet to be approved by the authorities, so we may have to change things a little. But I would say that the second half is really fast.

It is unreal value, no doubt at all and I will do the 3 but it seems a bit drastic, to contradict myself I do agree with whoever said it was getting stale so maybe this will be good thing.

A new venue will.attract the old crowd back, park is very boring after a few years

I don't see the same numbers coming up from outside Dublin to do the half now as the Park was convenient and familiar--time will tell.I'm out anyway after 10yrs in a row,i'll do Clonmel instead which i have missed most years for this.

The new location is very easy for anyone traveling outside Dublin. Straight up m50 onto m1 and off at one of the exits. Its also a good venue for the family, as can have bbq's there, there is a farm for the kids, a great play ground and loads of space for ball games.

Also close to the beach for nice walk afterwards

Great to see the excellent race series undergoing a change in format. I've no doubt the organisers will continue to put on a top quality series. No harm changing things up a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 476 ✭✭RunRoryRun

Will be giving it a miss next year except for the 10 mile. I think it's a shame it's being moved out of the PP, but understand if they weren't able to make it work. I expect numbers will fall dramatically - hope I'm wrong, but can't imagine they can maintain figures if it's not city centre based.

Do you think that all 11k runners this year lived close to the city centre?

Obviously you don't, but it's a fact of life that people travel to races. If the race is a good course I can see them selling out. If it's multiple laps, then maybe not.

I think accessibility-wise, that the PP is more convenient, and that will have a huge impact. On public transport it's easier for me to get into the city-centre to attend the race than have to get to the city-centre and then get another train / bus to Donabate - it's not a point of argument, just common sense & my own thoughts on racing / not racing. It's possible it will sell out, and I hope it does, but I think it's less likely to attract the absolute numbers due to its location.

Offer a guaranteed entry option to anyone who signs up to all 3 races in the race series and the organisers will have no bother keeping numbers up.

Yeah but you can't defer so if you are injured come next October your money is bye bye.
I'd be much happier paying my marathon fee after the half marathon, 5 weeks out or whatever it is from the marathon, if you're in good shape after the HM there's a good chance you'll make it to the start line of the full.
That's what I did in 2013 and 2014, wasn't possible this year cos it sold out so early.

If you enter the marathon now, it is about 20 euro cheaper. If you have a one in four chance of being injured, you could enter early every year and it would work out about the same as waiting. ..

Option to differ the accepted entry to next year sounds like a nice option to have, like London marathon. Harder on the organisers though

Do you not still have to pay the entry fee (again) in London ? Pretty sure that's the case (Berlin too). You're just guaranteeing your spot by deferring, but you do not get to use your original entry fee.
So the same system effectively operates in Dublin, as you are guaranteed your place once you enter early enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

Ah fair enough, I didn't know that about London Marathon. Cheers.

Yep, it's under 40 quid though so not a big deal.

Grr, the people who came up with the entry form on the website need to learn the difference between countries and nationality. The names of teams entered into the football world cup are not the same thing as nationality.

I was all for Newbridge park, but the course is almost all outside of the park. Know some of the roads around Lusk and they're wide enough but pretty boring and exposed.

They were never going to have the race in there and made that clear earlier. It's a better location for serving a big crowd and entertaining kids etc

I hated going into the park, pain in the hole. I grew up running around some of the route. The old n1 section is terrible to run on, the other roads are much better. The view from the mow over the city and out to lambay are class.

Plenty of up and down/small hills from the start to blakes cross. After that its slighly up hill into lusk and out the skerries road. A few ups and downs but your slowly going upwards all the time.

After you turn left towards the mow its gets fun. Still going sligtly uphill until you get to the s-bends, after that its a tough climb for a mile, until you get to the highest point of the course at another bad bend. You drop down then and left at the mow pub, all downhill for about 3k down the yellow hill.

After that your back on the old n1, up and down until you turn for donabate and the finish

chatting to one of the organisers at a 5k yesterday.

one factor in the move was the number of north county dub.meath and louth entrants in the fingal 10k.

they felt the new race would attract this catchment area.

we' ll see how it goes.

my one reservation is the single lane access to newbridge house from the m1 motorway .likel to get clogged up with traffic? Not sure on the geography whether theere is another entrance??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

The venue is perfect, well able to handle the crowds, id imagine they'll put on a shuttle bus for the train. Never a major problem getting in and out of it and back to the m1. There does be huge crowds around it during summer.

The only thing i don't like is the old n1. I have ran on every part of it from swords to drogheda, fooking hate it.

    Two questions

    1) is it a PB course for your goal race?
    2) is it as tough as the phoenix park?

It will be tougher than the park. Depends how soft your pb is, i wouldn't be hopeful. Its uphill to just over half way, then a sharp downhill, after that you will be on wide open road more than likely against any breeze.

That's a major no go for me so. Don't get why dublin can't have a solid pb route for a half marathon. Off to Cork for me.
