Why is this the first year I'm hearing this here, black Friday this, black Friday that, I'm not blatantly Anti Americanisms, but this is a US thing!
Fair enough if there's some deals available, there probably would be anyway, just seems it's in every ad I hear.

    Carry on like normal.

    Hope it goes away.

Oh, kinda kicked in about 6 years ago in Ireland/Europe. Don't know how you'd miss the ads over the years TBH. Harvey Norman's started it here on the radio, and they are an Oz company.

It's nothing new, but sales, that's a good thing for us.

Don't look into how it works in the states. But if you want to, Google's your mate

Just another way to make us buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like.

At this stage it's just another spin on the "permanent sale" sh1tology... The runup hype is setting us all up for a major anticlimax going on the "bargains" that have been flagged so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,974 ✭✭✭Chris_Heilong

It started in an episode of South Park a few years back, that is how most of us heard about it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Just call it Harvey Norman day where prices go up before the sale so that they can come back down again for the sale.

As part of the PC brigade I find it offensive that the Irish have culturally appropriated Black Friday. It's an American thing.

Ah now; Would that not suggest that White is somehow the norm, here in Ireland? Can't be having that!

I didn't need another reason to hate that company/infuriatingly loud and shouty man, but I'll always take one. If there was ever a man/entire group of advertising executives that deserved to be locked in a room with a dozen vuvuzelas at full blast, it's them.

That clip, which I think is old and from a couple of years ago, really makes you despair for the human race.

Watching people trample each other to get in and buy rubbish they likely don't need, then nearly start a fight over a Polaroid branded TV. Cheap tat at best.

The shop owners must be laughing all the way to the bank with all this BF nonsense. Its all people have been talking about in work for days. How anyone can spend £500 on a TV and say "I saved 400" is beyond me. No you didn't save 400, you spent 500 ya numpty.

I'm in the UK now and my car is off the road until I get papers and blah etc.

Imagine my surprise when I start looking for some headphones so I don't need to interact with the plebs on the busses and pavements only to find that I am expected to go fighting my way into a shop today and risk life and limb to get a set of headphones for 35 that were reduced from 89 (but we're previously on sale for 69)

I'd rather pay 89 and go buy them tomorrow.

What is BF? I'm reading it at the moment as "bally fcuking nonsense", which, y'know, works for me, but I'm curious as to what it actually is.

...hur dur, Black Friday, I got it. I thought it was a bit of internet slang I'd missed. I'll stick with "bally fcuking nonsense" anyway. :D

Also, I dislike the Black Friday thing. I think it's one of the more shameful "traditions" to import, it mostly causes harm in the US and we don't need it here. Also, the mob mentality that starts up is actually alarming. Sure, the majority of people who go out for the sales remain totally normal, rational people, but you see the videos every year of what happens when something hits critical mass and a sort of mob panic sets in. And as someone else brought up, people have been injured and died in Black Friday mob crushes or accidents.

It's an American consumerist trend, just like Christmas. Whereas the "christmas rush" here was a few weeks before Christmas, Black Friday just extends the frenzy out further into november.

But would that not just be natural selection doing its duty?
Getting rid of humans stupid enough to get themselves crushed to death whilst fighting to get a half price kettle?
Surely no great loss tbh, lets be realistic, we aren't going to be losing any brain surgeons, barristers, etc in these crushes will we?

Meeeh. All very well until you lose a friend or family member, isn't it though? And very small humans don't have any choice about their parents having an incredibly dumb moment.

Nah, I don't subscribe to the "decrease the surplus population" view!

I'm not going to complain too much when we have Holy Thursday and the mad off licence dash beforehand.

It's just an opportunity to get sales for these companies, if you're going to buy something use it, if not ignore it.

I've saved a couple of hundred quid on presents for Xmas today.

    Give it time...

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

God be with the days when Black Friday was every Monday and Thursday in Lidl when lads wrestled to buy themselves 2 generators, 2 chainsaws, a giant boltcutters and 3 rachet sets.
