I don't eat fish! An alternative?

I really don't get why people eat it, but my point with this being that I'm missing out on an essential part of a balanced diet, and it's the only thing left to make my diet perfect. I've even heard that eating oily fish every so often will is why the Japanese live so long, and that it might also cure acne... which I get on occasion.

Since I hate fish so much, I'm hoping that supplements should suffice equally as well for getting the vital nutrients? At the moment I'm taking holland and barrett 1000 mg cod liver oil capsules. It also says "240 mg of active omega-3" somewhere on it? Is that as good as eating fish!? I presume I could do better?

I also here another thing to be weary of is that because the fish often live in polluted waters that such oil supplements mightn't be very good! I get a certain amount of omega-3 in the wall nuts that I eat, but I hear that's not as good.

    Any advice please,

    Thanks

Check out the examine.com article on fish oil. Very good info there. Yeah 300mg isn't gonna be much at all. I take 1.5g. Two tablets from the myprotein store.

What's your problem with fish? All fish from strong tasting mackerel to almost bland cod?

You may just not have found a fish you like or you've had it very badly presented and cooked.

I don't post here at all but just saw the thread title when I logged in.

If your not generally a fussy eater I'd say you've just never had good fish. Go to a fishmonger and ask them for ideas on how to cook it. Starting off you can disguise the taste with Asian or Indian flavours.

Supermarket fish generally isn't as fresh or has been frozen and will never be as good and more likely to have a fishy taste

When's the last time you tasted it? I used to only eat cod and similar white fish. I took up eating mackerel for health reasons and was shocked enough to find that not only could I tolerate it, I enjoy some of them. There is one with teryaki sauce which I really like.

As a kid the stink of it really put me off, I think it was kippers my parents ate, I viewed all tinned fish the same, but your taste buds are supposed to change as you get older. I used to hate the taste of mayo as a kid too and love it now.

    I hate fish.

Boards: go to a fish monger. Taste different fish.

It's not hard for someone to know they don't like fish.

Fish is filled with omega-3, vitamin D and protein. Get that into you. Walnuts and flaxseeds have some of the same types of fats as fish too. It's a start.

Tbf, saying you hate all fish because you didn't like cod that time is like saying you don't like veg because you didn't like broccoli that time.

So suggesting trying other fish is a valid enough suggestion.

I remember reading that grass feed beef has an omega 3 profile compariable to salmon. Is that correct or was it guff?

The fat itself does but overall it isn't comparable.

Can I crash this thread and ask a question please?

Not a huge fish fan either but tasted some lovely cured smoked salmon today.

Is this just the same as your usual processed meat or would the benefits be as good as eating fresh fish?

Don't have a huge amount of time to cook lunches in advance and really not a fan of the processed meats in supermarkets.

The cured salmon would be great if I thought the benefits were.

I know the sodium might be a problem but otherwise ... ?

    Thanks

I don't get how this can be true.

Every fresh fish tastes different. There is no one "fish" flavour. It's like saying you don't like the taste of "meat" and not eating chicken, beef, pork, venison, pigeon, quail, duck, horse, seal, whale etc. without actually tasting them.

I'm not having a go at you OP, but I hear this a lot and it genuinely bamboozles me. They all taste different.

Yeah, it's on my to do list. But is there any good brand for fish oil? There is a lot of pollution in the sea lets not forget.

Good bit more salt and not as fresh but otherwise nutritionally speaking it's grand. A lot more favourable to its fresh counterpart than processed sliced meat which is generally just a mulch of leftovers.
