7.3 is about 100 times weaker than the big one a few years ago.

yeah 7.3 is like a loud fart.

    what a minute...actually 7.3 is fcuking yuuuge!

Was just going to say that. The Richter scale can be misleading when you just look at the numbers, in the grand scheme of things, that's not a massive quake, it's just at a very sensitive location.

    9.1 in 2011

Regardless how big it was or wasn't. it's still a bloody dangerous situation .
Hopefully someone takes the decision to decommission the power plant .

100 times weaker ?? WTF, the 2011 earthquake was 9.1, how does your mathematics work ?

    It's a logarithmic scale.

I think the Richter scale is a logarithmic scale. Still a big shake, but huge difference between 7.3 and 9.1.

OK, it's about 80 times weaker, anyone good at doing the maths.

    Is it high?

    3m

3m around Fukushima prefecture, 1m in surrounding prefectures. Tv was telling ppl to leave their homes asap. Better safe than sorry.

Depending on the tides, that could be significant but is probably well below any sea defence limits.

Live on NHK of tsunami coming ashore. Pray it won't be bad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 337 ✭✭Oodoov

Couldnt of happened at a worse location.

The video of the water leaving the harbour would get you moving fast anyway.

NHK now saying the tsunami is expected to be 3 metres high, and has been observed about 20km off the coast of Fukushima

NHK is where it is at.
The first tsunami wave was close to 1 metre but subsequent waves are expected to be higher.

Warning that people need to be aware that the tsunami waves are strong enough to wash people away.

How long does it take one of those to hit the coast?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

No details as yet of any damage to nuclear plant. Please god it stays that way. I've got two friends in Tokyo so am somewhat worried.

They said on the news the cooling system has stopped at reactor 3.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 337 ✭✭Oodoov

Tepco saying cooling system is offline but no "immediate" danger whatever that means.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,770 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

The cooling water is at 27C and there is no current need to worry about the nuclear plant.

Correction. Not the reactor itself is affected. The water cooling system for the spent fuel pool at Fukushima Daini power plant has failed. No immediate danger, water temperature in the pool is currently 27 degrees, and is not expected to reach dangerous levels for quite some time.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Reactor 3 won't blow up for a while....

I'd imagine that whole plant is very fragile. Can spent nuclear fuel explode if the situation get's away from them? Anyone?

    Nope, but here goes...
    [latex] \log \displaystyle \frac{I_2}{I_1} = 9.1 - 7.3[/latex]

    [latex]\displaystyle \frac{I_2}{I_1} = 10^{1.8} \approx 63.09[/latex]

Not for around a week, according to NHK. Also, it appears as if the pump issue has affected the Fukushima Daini power plant, not the Fukushima Daichi plant that suffered a meltdown in 2011.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Live pictures of the nuclear plant now of NHK. Reports of Tepco looking to restart the cooling system within the hour. Fingers crossed they have it under control. Striking how vast a facility it is.

Fukushima daiichi reactors are back to full order for now.

Imagine trump being in charge if that happens. He'll let California burn as it voted against him overwhelmingly

Except his resorts. He'll claim insurance on those.

Amazing that people seem to be still driving around coastal areas even now live on the TV. Given what was witnessed last time they are either very brave of very foolish.

I think the equation they use is:

    [latex]M = log \displaystyle \frac{I}{s}[/latex]
where M is the Richter scale magnitude, I is the intensity and s is the standard intensity
so you end up with 2 equations (one for each magnitude), rearrange to solve s, let one equal the other and work from there.

Wasn't there a bunch of tremors near that a few months back?

The ring of fire, release some stress in one area will cause it to build up somewhere else, as to where, your guess is as good as mine.

The water from the tsunami will sort that problem.

    Nothing to worry about.

Seems like its not too bad, watching the NHK live feed

Seems like the actual earthquake shaking took out the cooling system not a Tsunami wave itself. It has been restarted and all is normal according to Tepco. Good to hear that.

Seen mentioned on reddit that 2011 Japan Happened one month after one in New Zealand 2016 exactly the same.

Actually the waves started weeks ago, they were mexican waves originating from the US after Trumps election.

Seriously, it seems like everything is fine for the moment. It does make you think about what could potentially happen and how we should view nuclear fuel in future (Im pro nuclear btw).
