Cars that only fordners tend to drive

I was driving around town yesterday and noticed a couple of cars that you rarely/never see an Irish person in. This isn't a dig at foreigners driving old cars or anything like that but it got me thinking. Cars like the Daewoo Lanos, Mitsubishi Spacestar and Nissan Maxima all seem to be driven exclusively by foreigners in this country. Irish people that drive cars of the same vintage seem to stick to the golf, corolla, mondeo, Passat etc.

Am I alone in seeing this or are there any other cars that don't seem to attract Irish people but do attract our European and African cousins here in Ireland

I reckon it's down to what's popular in someone's home country. When I sold cars, the Brazilians went mad for opels. Sold a good few Toyotas to Africans, French people here are often very patriotic when it comes to cars, Then you have countries where automatic is popular, and when they come over here they might be on a provisional or used to smaller cars. you'd have a lot of Indian doctors looking for 1.0 Vitz and Yaris automatics. In Eastern Europe (again, generalising massively) BMW, Mercedes etc would be proper premium products with suitably high price tags relative to income. I know people from Romania and Poland who snapped up older prestige cars with high tax here because they can be bought much cheaper over here.

Seems like an odd idea for a thread to me to be honest. Plenty of generalisations being thrown around, not really sure its fair to be honest.

I am foreigner ( well, on passport at least) and I find it kind of funny and amusing. Some of the stuff is actually spot on.

Lithuanians and Polish loved to bring from Lithuania 10 years ago:

    Bmw e34 525i, 530i
    Bmw e36 325I 328I, 330I
    Audi a4 1.9tdi
    Audi a6 2.5tdi avant
Opel calibra ( even had one myself here on ltu reg)
    Audi coupe 2.8
    VW passat, preferably estate.

Now Lithuanians love their audis, a4 or a6. BMW is still popular, but 520d mostly here, but in Lithuania it's mostly everything with 3.0L+.
Good call on scenic and zafira. Very very popular.

Lithuanians love their audi, BMW and vw even now. I kind of never had love to that trio. Always was a jap head. Kind of would love a nice beamer now, maybe my roots started kick in.

Used to live in Belgium myself and older BMW's seemed to be popular with the more shady character.

Had a Jeep Grand Cherokee before and a Lithuanian dude I used work with called it a drug dealers car, said the Russians go mad for them.

It's funny how different cars are perceived in different countries.

Foreigner here, drive an older 2.5l E39, easily the biggest engine in our entire carpark at work. Irish people think 2.0 is enormous. Where I'm from 2.5 is maybe above average but nothing more than that. So I would go with the notion that people drive what they're used to from back home.

Anecdote: Was chatting to a couple of golf buddies and topic was all three of us need either a new car or had just gotten a new one. When I was asked what am I looking at I said still in the decision making process but I have a prudent option, a practical option and a tempting one. When asked which one was the tempting one I said Audi TT quattro. Next question was diesel or petrol so I replied not in those very words that a diesel in a TT would make me cry. So next thing he says to me ohhh thats a bit of a sporty car isn't it, you'd have to get a 1.4 or bigger wouldn't you? With a bit of a shock horror expression on his face. The weird thing is the only diesel tt is actually 2.0. I guess your man isn't a car buff.

We don't. We just have a backwards arse taxing system towards anything larger than a one litre and anything that emits something other than a rainbow out its exhaust.

Half Irish half Italian, never gave two ****s.
Don't care about the size of the engine but do like to have min 150 bhp.
170 passat and got the wife a 177 auris.
Already planning my next wagon and I'm split between a 535d or a 3.0 a6.

Don't really see the problem to be honest. Thought the "ankle biters" comment was a bit off colour but the rest is good stuff.

Actually spot with jeep grand cherokee. Another option would be 7 series. Specially e38. There is even Russian movie called "beemer" about Russian mafia.

It's just a funny observation, it's not designed to be offensive or xenophobic and most people here have seen that point. It's by no means the strangest thread running on boards at the minute

    I'll disagree, it's mostly E36s and pre-facelift E39s :D
Also, W202 Mercs and Vectras (b).

I'm from the lovely country myself and this is my vehicle history here:
    - E46 320Ci (2.2)
    - E38 750i (5.4)
    - E39 520i (2.2)
    - MK4 Golf (1.6) - still own it
    - E34 518i (short episode, couldn't get it insured)
    - E60 520i (2.2) - daily driver (I wanted an E38 728i, but no one will insure me on one anymore. Sad reality)

    I've plans for a summer car back home - E36 M3 / E46 330Ci Vert / E39 540i / E39 M5 - depends what's there and how much cash I have
