    Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar case or would advise me. I was stopped by garda for speeding at 170km/hr on a 100km/hr zone going from dublin to galway. ( it was midnight..i work as a doctor and had to start a long shift at 8 in the morning..still insane i agree).I wasnt given any fine and instead i was issued a court summons which i have recieved. Any one knows what will happn in the court? Should i hire a lawyer? Will it make a difference?

You were doing 70% more than the speed limit. I'd say you risk being banned.

    Hire a solicitor. Quickly.

Were you summonsed for speeding or dangerous driving? There's an important difference.

I'd hire a solicitor to advise, anything over 50% of the limit is very serious.

In the UK, speeding is treated differently here.

How did he stop you..can't imagine doing 170 and even seeing a speed trap? What did he say to you on the night?

Without getting into legal advice, your mitigating circumstances better be spectacular, otherwise you'll be up a proverbial creek.

Engage legal counsel, but in all honesty, I'd be expecting a hefty punishment regardless.

    Definitely get a solicitor.

Be very careful if you were caught in kildare district and end up in front of Judge Zaidan.

He's fair, but he utterly despises excuses and stupid reasons.

Fork out big for a solicitor my freind, because anything over 160kph risks a driving ban.
Now a doctor doing 170 is less likely to be put off the road than "Damo in the felt-spec Passat", but it's still likely...

    Which is totally wrong imo..

As a doctor, have you ever had to try to piece back a body after a crash at 170kph...?

Aye, doesn't matter how well trained you are as a driver, someone else messes up in front of you and you're doing that speed, the end result is going to be identical...

He'd be a lot more defendable at something like 120kph, but 170? Lol, of with your head...

If "Damo" posted that can you imagine the reaction it would get.
Why mention that you're a doctor anyway OP..what's that got to do with the incident?

Personally i would get legal advice, especially if your job would be difficult or impossible without a car.

If you are caught doing 40km over limit in NZ the car can be taken off you on the spot for 28 days, which imo is a good way of learning a valuable lesson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,047 ✭✭✭Truckermal

I'm surprised he didn't arrest you on the spot, either way you need a good solicitor..

When I lived in the U.K. The local magistrates at the time had a policy of banning speeding drivers for a month for every mile per hour over a hundred. There were police traffic cars and speed traps all over the place 24/7 and week in week out the papers were full of boy racers (and sales reps) picking up two and three year bans.

jesus what car are you driving to get to 170klm and what car was the garda driving.
Dont know what you were thinking to be going at that speed , nothing is that important.

In fairness, unless Damo is on his way resuscitate someone after a heart attack, he has less business speeding which is why something like 120 or so on a 100 road with space would be defendable in a doctor's case - I'd certainly not whinge about the expediency - but not 170... Which is why Abdullah here needs a solicitor.

How did the Garda manage to catch up with you.

What help is a solicitor going to be.

Car doesn't need to be anything special to get to 170kms any of the new Garda cars wouldn't have an issue doing it either. Definitly get a solicitor OP, Id say it'll be a hefty ban anyway but a good solicitor may be able to get you a lesser ban due to how important your car is to your job

170 on a motorway at night does wonders for the dpf/upcoming nct.

Have to laugh at people who think 170 is the equivalent of mass murder . You were unlucky not to just get a fine and 2 points imo.

....170 Km is a distance not a speed. 170 Km per hour is a tad fast and I have read newspaper reports of bans etc being imposed but at night on an empty motorway in a 2 liter car....all too easy to do.

Hard luck and not the worst thing you can do on the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,795 ✭✭✭Isambard

have to smile at all those who apparently think 170km/h is some kind of warp speed.

It's just over 100mph. Most cars could do that surely. Mine certainly does but not very often.

Excuse the pun OP but you'll probably just have to take your medicine. Being a doctor is not an excuse unless you can prove you were on a callout or emergency at the time, I'd imagine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭OldmanMondeo

Your over 160kph, your probably getting a ban, just google what has been happening to people caught over the limit.

You say your a doctor? You probably have seen what happens to people who crash at that speed.

It appears you realise you fecked up.

I suggest first thing you do is get a good solicitor familiar with that court and judge. Then........ grovel, plead and be humble. You need your licence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭KwackerJack

Its a ban.....anything over 100mph is an automatic ban!

You may have some hope if you could prove you rushed to a home case etc but anything less and you may hire a driver

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,418 ✭✭✭bladespin

They'll check, be prepared if you use that excuse.

    Cry me a river.

You'll be standing on Motorway bridges with "Won't somebody think of the children" signs next.

Let he without sin. Speeding is like masturbation. Everybody does it and anyone who denies it is a liar......... and the faster you go, the quicker you get there :pac:

I'm sure you can afford a solicitor.
A solicitor will get this reduced by talking to the garda involved.

I hope you can explain the long hours you had been working and the pressure you are under if you have to speak before a judge

next time put the foot down. and get off the nest off ramp. no chance of them catching you at that kind of speed.

Yes it's only roughly 110 mph

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭thadg

I was caught doing 157 km/h on the motorway , middle of the day , good dry day by traffic corps . he didn't say a whole lot, only to keep an eye on my speed. got 2 points and 80 euro fine. I was lucky he wasn't 2 miles up the road

110mph is looked at away more severely here than the uk. cars have come a long way since the 1985 bluebird. its not the worst thing you could do in a car.

get a good solicitor and make an offer of 500-800 euros to the poor box or whatever your solicitor suggests.

youd probably end up getting a speed limiter if you weren't a doctor.

5 points for dangerous / careless driving and a fine.

it will depend on the conditions of the night, road conditions and how polite you were to the garda.

it would be hard luck to get the licence revoked, if you have no previous driving convictions

Two things there, firstly it was on a motorway, secondly where there are no "meat and two veg" in a court case, softer punishments tend to be handed out..
We're dealing with meat and two veg here :o

This was not on a motorway. It was 170 in a 100 zone. That's 70% over. Being a Doctor or going to work is absolutely no excuse.
