To Feed a flu...

My mums old saying was feed a flu and starve a bug. Everyone in the house at the moment has an awful flu/cold thing in various stages of recovery and I was hoping to cook something that would make them feel better.

So if anyone has some ideas or recipes that are snot-busting, throat-soothing, sinus clearing or immune-boosting, I would love to hear them! Cooking ability, and time needed and budget are not a problem so the sky's the limit!

Just so you know, we've been busy all week so living off packet chicken noodle soup and ready dinners. Virtually anything would be an improvement on that :)

It's "feed a cold, starve a fever'. So have they a cold or a flu? Flu entails a fever.

A different saying to my mum (or her mum). :)

Most of us would have had fevers at one stage though fairly mild. Nothing a couple of paracetamol wouldn't bust. One person worse than the rest though is stuck in bed, ache-y and shivery.

Personally if I'm all bunged up, I find a curry is great to clear the sinuses. I've even been known to go the Chinese (when I don't have the energy to cook) to get a their Ginger & Spring onion beef or chicken - the ginger really helps.

Or you can't go wrong with a good stew/casserole for comfort.

If you need to clear sinuses nothing beats raw garlic.

Yep garlic is great for sinuses, chestiness, anything with the breathing

Thanks for the replies, guys! I made the beef curry suggested by chuckles with lots of ginger, chilli and some spring onions. It went down very well with the gang last night.

There's a whole chicken that someone bought in the fridge for tonight. I'll probably do a proper chicken broth with the leftovers for tomorrow and load it up with garlic :)

    Thanks again!

Which gives you a hint of the accuracy of either. ;)
Most people say the flu, when they mean a cold. I suppose they are both bugs.

A hot meal with lots of flavour (as taste is usually numbed). Chilli, spice, etc usually make me feel better.
