Foire aux vins is the best time to go, September/October. Less so the spring time sales.

uk motorists dont have to deal with the irish laws, and the irish authorities could quite easily confiscate your booze and let you go to court to get it back.

Nonsense. I go to France every year with a few family members for a wine trip. We bring a van and generally come back with it loaded to the gills with wine and cheese!

I would usually have around 25 cases of wine, we have never had any issue with customs coming back. They can't impose a limit on goods purchased as a consumer in another EU state. The guidelines are just that - arbitrary threshold set by someone at a desk somewhere, they have no legal standing as long as you are bringing the stuff back for your own personal use.
