Looking to join a golf club in 2017 for an affordable price around EUR 1000.00 a year with good greens, in good condition and a testing course. If im honest i want to be playing a course setup for single figure handicappers and not just a field with flags in.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Said it before and I'll say it again. Castleknock. Can't beat their credits system. Have a search as I've stuck plenty up about it before

Roganstown is 1300. Testing course css is usually 34/35 points.
You get 5 day membership on swords open plus the gym, swimming pool and sauna included.
Good short game practice area and a short range for hitting irons.
3 comps per week in Roganstown plus the open in swords so comps on Tuesday Friday Saturday and Sunday.

"affordable price around EUR 1000.00 a year with good greens, in good condition and a testing course"

The problem is the above does not really exist.

As was said above Castleknock ticks all the boxes but is €1,450. You should look at Corrstown too.

Is there any courses with under 25 membership or student membership as this make it more possible?

What's this credits system seve? Couldn't see much about that in particular here, nor online? Maybe I'm going mad!

I think you pay 1450 for the year and then its given back in credits with a round costing a set amount of credits and also being able to spend in the shop/bar accordingly until they run out with the option to top up as and when they do run out.

It's a good deal if you use a gym and are able to give that up.

I still say Castleknock is the cheapest golf membership which only costs the price of the gui fee + insurance if you want to go for it. the caveat is the 600 you have to pay..... but it remains your money, you get a card with 600 credit to spend there, however you want. gear, clubs, balls, golf, food, drink. if you want to bring friends there for a few games you can pay for them with your credits and they can pay you back. a no brainer really

If pay and play is what you are after then when you think about it, Castleknock is actually the cheapest membership in the Country. Possibly the world.

It is only the price of the GUI fee of €20. You can take out the insurance too if you want for another €20 and that's it. That is all the membership costs. So it's a hell of a lot cheaper than any of the others and a much, much better course.

Well ok, it's not quite as simple as that. :D You have to give them €700 if you want 5 day membership or €1,450 if you want full membership. But that remains your money and you get a card with credit on it as most clubs operate. There are no restrictions on how you spend it, so be it in the bar, restaurant, pro shop or on playing golf, you choose.

So if you think it is a lot of money to shell out up front you might be right, but weigh it up and consider if you would play much golf to use up that credit. Would you maybe have a function in the restaurant/bar during the year, family get togethers, a few drinks & grub after your game or just bring the wife and kids over for a meal a few times a year. Bring your friends out and pay for them on your card and they give you the cash. Are you in a society? If you had an outing there, you can use your credit to pay for the outing, or maybe you can stock up on a few prizes. Maybe you might be after a new set of clubs, a few boxes of balls during the year or maybe some other golf gear. So yea, you might fork out a few quid up front, but it is possibly money you would be spending anyway during the year and if so, then it makes a lot of sense to consider Castleknock as a real and very cheap option to become a member of a decent quality club and course.

The food is excellent and if you are local enough, it is easily one of the best restaurants around and even if you want to try it out, you can use the bar and restaurant whenever you want even if you are not a member.

Rates for golf are greatly reduced on the walk in or online rates and guest rates are available too. I think you pay €20 for 18 holes as a member & €25 for a guest but it could be €40 for a non member. And generally they do a deal where you pay and extra fiver and you can choose one of the special meal options after your game.

Disclosure: I am a long time full member of Greystones and have no interest in moving from there, but Castleknock is on my doorstep. I am a five day member there for the last few years as I considered it as a no brainer be able to go over midweek evenings for a bit of practice and as a family, we go over to the restaurant a good bit anyway. I don't even play an awful lot of golf there.

Their administration leaves a bit to be desired though and it would be my only gripe about the place, but I have a feeling that is more to do with Carr golf than Castleknock. The staff are all excellent.

    Hi Seve,
I understand how it works now but only seems like a great deal if you are not going to be playing much golf! You are looking at roughly one round a week on the credit based system but that will only end up being topped up and therefore no bar food would really be included if you were to play more.
I suppose the EUR 1800.00 membership is better value if you are to play lots of golf.
    Thanks
    Adam

Travel on a bit from North Dublin and you get to Laytown Bettystown - links golf for a reasonable price (€1070 per year).

I'm afraid this is a no brainer for you..

Corrstown is €400 from now till the end of 2017 for under 25 Membership and only €600 for under 30. And €1000 for full membership. That's 27 holes 2 minutes pass Dublin airport in a club that has no bank debt.

    HAS I said, no brainer.

Give Daragh a ring in the office and he will take you out for a few holes to try it. Be quick only a few spaces left at the above prices for 2017 as the club is near full membership at the under categories and the other offer is for a limited number.

How often do you intend to play if u are based in the UK?
Lots of the courses in North Dublin suffer from the rain so winter golf is sporadic at best.

    Hi Mike,

I travel alot with work so i am in Ireland about 6 months of the year as my role is based around UK/IE.

As this is the case it is much more cost effective to look at overseas membership here then to get full membership in the UK.

    Thanks

Sorry forgot to mention, you can also get associate membership which is also 7 day membership with some weekend restrictions for €900 and family membership also available which is excellent value. I think Corrstown is one of the few clubs around that actually have family membership available.

That's the problem when the club is not own by its members and it's a business. I'm afraid it will only be a matter of time before all that land is built on. You need to sell a lot of green fees for the millions you make in selling land.

Is it me or have a lot of memberships dropped in price in North Dublin in the past few years?

    I remember a time when Roganstown and St. Margaret's were both €1,500 a year now there €1,300 & €1,000.

Corrstown are offering cheaper membership of €910 which has limitations on weekend play.

Nice to see things have become more affordable, I'm sure there's a lot of competition between the clubs.

Is there many other clubs which have dropped in annual subs in the last 5 years?

Member there myself, great thing about it we play off full tees and greens all year.
It was only closed 2 days all last year as it drains really well.
Plus you get the gym and swimming pool included.

The only thing with Roganstown is you're at the mercy of whatever the owners demand, it's a little safer in a members run club but saying that it wouldn't put me off joining. Must say I like the course.

Are they still a bit funny about nipping out for a few holes in the evenings, think they used to insist you visit the pro shop first which was a bit annoying when the first tee is in the opposite direction and you just want to play 5-6 holes?

They reason for that is they were finding a lot of people who weren't members nipping out for holes.
Was there one evening they asked 8 non payers to leave swords open and 4 more on Roganstown.
There is always times in the evening if not in Roganstown then on swords open, which we have playing rights Monday to Friday.

Hi All, looking at joining a club in the new year after a 15 year break ! Was going to do the distance membership where my missus is from to get handicap and play opens etc but think I really want to be able go play 6-7 holes at my leisure in the evenings during the summer.

I know its not North Dublin but I'm 5 minutes away from Ashbourne and Corrstown, Should I be happy to look at these 2 only or travel further a field? Like Blackbush can still get the Under 35 membership which is significantly cheaper.

I played yesterday in Killeen Castle and I know its quite long but I left my house at 10am and didnt get back till 4pm. Just wont get away with that kind of time with another baby due next year :) Any thought or advise happily taken!

I'd go for Corrstown out of those - the 27 holes is an extra bonus along with the convenience.

I've never warmed to Blackbush but if the price is right....

I always feel the most important point when picking a golf club is access, I.e how far from home/work.

Then I would rate the course/facilities. Is it 18 or 27, does it have practice facilities, does it have a decent club-house, does it play Inter-club golf etc.

Next on my list is how the club is ran and what the debt situation. If it's a members own club with a professional business model, then that goes to the top of my list, put that's a personal opinion and some people are happy to go to a club ran by it's owners.

Finally cost, because I would pay more for the above. If you have to travel to far for a club the cost will mount up and the time it takes to play a round including travel will eventually lead you to looking at other options anyway.

St Margaret's is in great nick this year.
Roganstown has the 36 holes for mid week golf and decent practice area.
Hollywood lakes would be another option.
Would take any of those above ashbourne, correstown or blackbush.
Even swords open would be close to the 3 of them.

Thanks All - I was a Junior member in Ashbourne and played every day for multiple summers thought would be better to look further afield and meet new people etc.

Forgot about St. Margarets for some reason....

It's funny, I was at a function on Friday night with green keepers from most of the clubs you mention above and none of them would agree with you and they work in those clubs.

The 3 clubs you mention, Ashbourne, Correstown and Blackbush are all member clubs which means they don't put societies out before members and it doesn't take 5 hours for a round at the weekend. They are also interest offering golf to their members at the cost of running the facilities and not making a profit on top. It was only a few years ago when St Margaret's didn't even want members but only corporate golf.

But everybody will have their own view and that's why we all love golf but I would always take a club over a business golf club any day.

But everybody will have their own view and that's why we all love golf but I would always take a club over a business golf club any day.

At the same time I hear it's hard to get early tee times at some of the member clubs.
In Roganstown we have never had problems getting our 4ball out around our preferred tee time. The membership is limited at 400 so that may be the reason.
There are no societies book during member times.
We have 4 comps to play a week 3 in Roganstown and one in swords open which is a big plus for me.

In fairness that's nothing to do with member clubs. They are all the same. If there is a time you want, you get the same opportunity as everyone else to get that time. All you have to do it be quick off the draw when the time sheets go live.

Now if a club is boxing off time slots ahead of time for certain people then that is out of line, but it's rare and usually only for valid reasons.

Grange Castle box off a slot on Saturday from about 11- 1:30 for societies and green fees. Members can't book these times at any stage during the year. It's pretty annoying when you have paid your membership and can't get out some weekends. It's the main reason I'm seriously considering leaving there next year
