Are you a Foodie?

    I always thought the definition of a Foodie is someone who likes food. It's not. Browsing through Instagram recently, I've discovered that a Foodie is someone who orders the smallest, most ridiculous looking thing on the menu in a restaurant - and all in the name of posting a picture of it on IG and being a Foodie.

    This morning, I come across a woman who snapped a picture of her pan-fried trout. You could slide this thing underneath a closed door - that's how skinnny it is. But then I saw chips resting on top of it and I thought, 'Alright well obviously she's not completely crazy.' But then I read the caption and it was actually apple matchsticks. Jesus tonight.

    Then there were leaves on the side - actual leaves. I don't want to give the impression that they were the leaves which make a crunchy noise when you step on them at this time of the year, but they were still leaves. And, of course, no horrible picture of your meal would be complete without the #foodie.

    And then there was last night, when Daniel lashed up a snap of his dinner. You'd want to see this thing. It was some sort of steak but it had the physical dimensions of a Nokia 3210. And his two perfectly-round dollops of mash potato looked like f*cking golf balls, covered with some sort of brown sauce. As far as presentation goes, top notch, but it's a meal first and foremost and as a meal it didn't look like it'd satisfy Victoria Beckham or Keira Knightley.

    Am I being ignorant? Let me know because I don't get this Foodie thing. I don't get why there seems to be so much emphasis on the presentation of these so-called meals and not enough on the sustenance of which it provides. A lot of Irish people have a pretty unhealthy relationship with food at the moment, if the obesity figures are anything to go by, but there's something pretty unhealthy about what Foodies do as well in my view.

    I recall seeing an Irish food critic decry the lack of really good restaurants here. He put it down to the hoi polloi just wantin' a plah'a dinner. I'm guessing you and he wouldn't get on.

    He probably knows what he's on about. I haven't got a clue, except from where I'm stood the whole Foodie movement is a bit hipster-ish.

    Food...any kind of food...I love it...I'd eat the leg off a low flying duck...someone cooks it..I'll eat it...even my boss knows I need food otherwise I go quiet and look like I'm gonna start crying

    I get that you just trying to be insulting but there's more to cuisine than eating to excess. If someone was into ' motoring' they could be into the mechanics, the technology, history, driving, modern cars, classic cars, restoring, cars, trucks, motorbikes, etc.

    Yes, I'd like to think so. Food is something that excites me. All aspects of it. I'm always on the look out for new and exciting places to eat.

    When I'm travelling with work then I'll research the best places to eat in that city and make sure to visit there. I love wandering around markets and delicatessen looking for local produce. I love the simplicity of rustic local dishes, as well as the pomp and ceremony of fine dining.

    Not exactly a disaster when things are getting hot and heavy in the kitchen either.

    Have you guys tried Marco's on Dame St? Oh. My. God. The food....I swear. I got the 3' pizza which cost €72 but it was so worth it and I'm, like, so full now. Marco does this thing where he, like, uses Sicilian cheese, from Sicilia or something, and it's fab. Check it on my Instagram page FoodieWanker4Life. It's the one that looks like a CD.

    I wasn't staking my claim for a Pulitzer with the OP bro, so you will find flaws such as omitting the quality of Foodie foods. But yes, a Tayto and cheese sambo is far more appealing to me than a tiny little steak.

    You didn't mention quality or flavour at all, Just quantity. Maybe you'd be happiest with big portions and not paying too much attention to other people's food. It's not obligatory to monitor other people's Instagram for this is that don't interest you.

    So maybe leave the tiny steak to someone who would appreciate the quality and you enjoy a crisp butty.

    I consider myself a foodie: I love eating food, I love cooking a nice meal or something different, I love coming up with my own combinations, I love trying new food, I love going out to restaurants, from fast food ones to Michelin star ones and anything in between.

    Tasty food is tasty, regardless of where it's served or how it's presented. My ma makes a delicious moussaka, looks like a pile of slop but it's amazing. Taking a photo of your food and putting it on Instagram and putting #foodie beside it doesn't make you one, being someone who actually enjoys eating food would be my definition of the word.

    With all due respect, I think you're confusing 'social media attention seeker' with 'foodie'. Or at least the idea you have of a foodie, which doesn't relate at all to my definition (see above).

    These twonks in Instagram who take photographs of the types of dishes that you describe (microscopic lamb chop with a camembert "foam" and honey glazed button mushrooms) are not foodies. They are **** who think they are foodies. I, like HalloweenJack, would consider myself a foodie as in I guzzle with gusto anything from a Miami street burrito to Michelin star venison. It's about going into a little backstreet Italian family restaurant and just telling the owner "don't give me a menu just make me something great that you would serve your family on a Sunday evening. Big fuckoff carafe of Chianti to go with it, my man!"

    The definition of a foodie is someone like Nigella Lawson ... constantly stuffing her beautiful face with pies, and pasta and pheasant.

    Anyone who has ever experienced the kind of cuisine that one could call "pretentious" will understand that it really is about flavours, quality and presentation and the quantity is just enough.

    But thinking that because you have ordered what looks like a salubrious dish because of its presentation makes you a foodie is laughable.

    Despite my original post which was of course a lighthearted one, I probably would be a "foodie".

    Love cooking - and can do so quite well.

    Have every herb and spice you can think of. As many fresh herbs as I can keep alive, I'll buy as many spices in the middle east as I can.

    Love baking and making things pretty.

    Mostly though, I love eating.

    Tomorrow I'm going for what's supposedly the best steak in Dublin. We shall see!

    I wouldn't say that I'm a foodie. I was very stubborn as a child and only ate very basic meals. In a roast, id have potatoes with no gravy, i still dont have gravy. I never even tried pizza until I was about 22 and i didnt even like steak. I do now though. I'm also a terrible cook.

    My OH loves trying new food and he is quite a good cook. He will always order random things from the menu so if we are out, I usually try some of his. I've tried kangaroo, crocodile, pheasant, duck and crab. I never thought that I would like prawns but I love them now.

    It's nice to get a good portion sometimes but I find in restaurants, it's better when you get smaller portions especially if getting a starter and what we think are small portions are actually just the right amount.

    If you'd rather spend a couple of hours (or longer) in the kitchen trying to reverse-engineer and recreate a dish which you clocked on last night's Great British Menu (this is 'cuisine', as a personal interest), rather than slouch in front of the box making your way into a series box set, you're highly likely to be a bona fide foodie, not a digital pretend foodie.

    Bonus points if you've seen and enjoyed Burnt.

    €72 is actually pretty good value for a 36 inch pizza. No wonder you were full after eating that.
