Need an introduction to small holdings

    Hi,

I am looking at buying a house with land around it. There are 12 acres altogether. We are not farmers ourselves and have no experience in farming of any kind. I'm looking for some ideas on how to best use the land.

Local farmers are not interested in the land. It has a steep gradient so wouldn't be ideal for a lot of farming.

What are some low maintenance animals that would be suited to that kind of land? We both work full time, so farming would not be a full time job for us. We need something that would not take up a lot of time and wouldn't require a lot of capital to get started.

Would it be a good idea to get a herd number?

Also, what grants and schemes are available for small farmers?
