Anybody know which courses are holding the qualifying competitions in the various GUI comps next year?
Particularly interested in north county Dublin. But a broader discussion is probably useful.

Mod edit - Let's not turn this into a moaning and spreading rumour thread. Thanks

Not up on the GUI website as yet anyways

If you go to this link :: https://www.golfnet.ie/tournaments whenever the provincial councils meet to decide upon it, I'm sure the relevant competitions will be posted in there.

I believe its usually mid november to early december that these decisions are made official. The meeting for Connacht is on the 29th of November for example

New to the game,  just under 6 months. How do you go about competing for your club, is there comps out there for high handicapers?

yes there are mainly regional based ones - what area of the country are you in and what handicap have you got?

South East, 18 but would be nice to have a goal over the coming years.

Moate GC are delighted to have been asked to host a regional Pierce Purcell qualifier in May.

Off 18 you have a few options there is an all Ireland Leinster Fourball run by the GUI but there will be other comps run by local clubs best to ask your club captain.
The pierce Purcell is probably the one to aim for. A good 15/16 handicapper is a handy partner.

Played Killarney over the break and their greens are in a shocking condition, some disease after taking hold

Ya Dbu greens are pretty horrendous at the moment with fuserium disease.
Will be fine again once a bit of growth arrives.
Hope they didn't charge u much to play

No idea on cost as was a gift.

Also the menu afterwards had about 12 items to choose from, but about 9 were not available, so not a great lasting impression
Wont be hurrying back..scenery was amazing though

If you let a one off poor impression in the depths of winter, influence your decision as to whether or not you'll play there again, you are doing it wrong and ultimately it's you and you alone that will lose out.
    Just sayin';)

    Respect.
It looks like you probably have an honest club with a handicapping committee that works well. The chancers clubs are revealed the further that competition goes.

I think Seve was being tongue in cheek. With their focus onbandits now, I dont think even the GUI,ILGU, would stand over the integrity of their interclub comps.

well I wasn't actually. Our club did very well to get to the final and you can't go any further, so you implied Greystones is a chancers club with dodgy handicaps.

I'm well aware of the rumours of the other club, but I wouldn't comment on them, but I can tell you, our club is as honest as the day is long.

    Well said Seve !
It's getting a bit tiresome here with the usual few posters who seem to want to tar every one who plays Interclub with the one brush. Success doesn't come easy as I well know. Umpteen practice rounds before and during competitions and a panel of players fully committed is mostly what takes place. I too cannot and will not comment on clubs that have been mentioned here but just because a club is successful doesn't mean it's down to players minding their handicaps.
Go out and play these competitions and you'll see it's not what you're led to believe.

Blessington Lakes beaten 5 1 in the garden County Final by Blainroe in Wicklow GC, it was alwys going to be a tough one for us as i would imagine that the Bainroe lads would be a lot more familiar with Wicklow than ourselves. Great workout with 3 really good practice matches now under our belts before facing City West GC next Saturday's Barton Cup. Some of our new signings straight into the side performing well so we have hope. On the issue of players minding their handicaps to say it does not go on is chemical Ali stuff it does with some clubs/players better at it than others. We lost 2 of our provincial towns panelists this year because they went to 8 .4 one of them for 3 days after a great score in a midweeker but hey it lets 2 more people this year. Thats what its all about.

I know it's always asked but can't find the previous link but can someone post a link to the hcap criteria for the different interclub teams?

Its okay seve. His comment just means that all the bandit clubs were on the other side of the draw :)

played a bruen practice at the weekend. Opponent spent ages looking for a ball on the 8th well over the 5 minutes. reluctantly only after highlighting the length of time spent looking for the ball did they trudge back to tee off again. as they were shorter than my partners drive i had to wait until their player who reloaded arrived back and they played again. well over 30 minutes waiting to take my shot after my partners initial drive.

It was a practice cannot understand the approach and seriousness that they took the match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭mike12

What sort of scores are you seeing/expecting from your Barton cup trials?
Seeing lots of decent scores but all seem to be throwing in a treble or worse at some stage of the round.

Blessington Lakes GC won their Barton Cup match v City West this afternoon. The lakeside men won their 2 away matches with our 1st pairing at home clinching the victory when they won at the 14th, both other matches were then called in with Blessington well up in both. Those Garden County matches really paid dividends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,742 ✭✭✭✭Wichita Lineman

Barton Cup 1st Rd - Moate beat neighbours Mount Temple today 2 from 2 at home and that all important away win clinched it. I'm particularly happy as I'm the manager.

A very busy day matchwise for us today as Moate also beat Longford in the Mixed Foursomes and came very close to beating Glasson in the Fred Daly only losing out on the 19th in the last tie of the match.

Not a bad day at the office.

Blessington lashed out of it by Tulfarris in the Provo towns, we lost 2 at home ffs and lost 3 away when the last 2 matches were called in. losing a local Derby always sucks. We were hoping to play them in the next round of the Barton cup if they won today but i have heard on the Grapevine that they have been beaten this afternoon by Dublin Mountain GC, can anyone confirm. We also got beat in the JB Carr 3 2 away by Woodenbridge GC last Wednesday.

Moate were beaten 3-2 by Esker Hills in 2nd round of Barton Cup last weekend. For anyone facing them later in the competition be aware that the likelihood is that you will be off the blue tees there and they are miles back from the 'normal' tees. It was crazy long.

We also bowed out rather tamely of the Irish Mixed Foursomes against a strong Tullamore side.

Our Central Towns side are playing next weekend v Co Meath GC.

Dublin Mountain GC had a 3&2 win over Blessington Lakes in the Barton Cup.

^ As Captain I'd normally try to be there to wish both teams well and watch them tee off at least and I would have introduced myself to a fellow Boardsie but I'm in Dublin all day due to family commitments. I hope you like the course.

Would have liked to take you up on this offer but the match is actually on this Saturday. I got a call out of the blue from the Captain of the team asking was I available. To be fair I was quite happy to play even though it means taking a half day at work as I'm scheduled to work this weekend. It feels good to represent the club so hopefully it will go well.

PS..........any tips on playing the course.

Wow ! Best of luck Macker but can't believe that you've been picked on a team to play a course that you've never played before !
But have to admire you taking on the challenge, hope it goes well for you.
Played there a few years back and from what I can remember it's not long but greens can be tricky depending on pin placement.

I think there is a course guide here that someone put up before. Its not an over long course but a tough test all the same.
1st - Par 4. OOB right, between the 2 large trees, slightly left is the better line to the green
2nd - Par 3, need to fade tee shot depending where pin is. Large tree protecting green
3rd - Par 4, 3 wood off the tee even off back sticks, drain about 50 yards in front of green is reachable in summer. Small pond to left of green and OOB all along right.
4th - Par 3. 99 meter if i remember correctly. Postage stamp green so make sure your distance is right. Can't go long as OOB. Very tough.
5th - Par 4, Index 1? Get a get tee shot away straight and a par is on. Approach is downhill to green.
6th - Par 4, slight dogleg right. Stone in fairway is your line. Don't go right as there;s trees and block out any approach to green, left side is better. Tight approach to green with the "Bull Ring" as well.
7th - Par 4. Deceptively long par 4. Tee shot to brow of hill still leaves a long approach. 2 tier green so make sure you hit the right one!! Very tricky putt if not.
8th - Par 4. Straightforward downhill but I haven't played it since the new green went in.
9th - Par 4. Used to be a driveable Par 4 but again, I haven;t played it since the new tee box went in.
10th - Par 4. Straight back up small hill, don't go left as it blocks out approach to green. Green sloped back to front AFAIR
11th - Par 4. Again slightly uphill. OOB all along the left and green slopes back south west I think.
12th - Par 4. Use an iron you hit straight!! Trouble all along the right.
13th - Par 4. Keep left of the big tree, approach to slightly elevated green.
14th - Par 5. First of the Par 5's. Keep slightly left with tee shot. Pond on right can catch out wayward second shot. Play as a 3 shot hole and you'll be fine.
15th - Par 3. Depending on tee box, it can be hard or extremely tough hole!! Green rises away from you and there's a pond on the right.
16th - Par 5. Decent tee shot over the above pont jus tto the right of the line of trees on the left (it'll make sense when you are there) can leave a shot at getting close to the green in 2. Don't go too far right as even second shot will be blocked out and makes the hole a lot longer. Again not one for going at in 2 if you have a score going.
17th - Par 4 Index 2. Not sure why of low index and i've got pars here a good few times. Straight down and green falls back to you
18th - Par 4. Straight drive needed, straight approach needed and green falls back to you as well.

Hope you enjoy playing there as its a lovely course and after the fine weather we've had, it should be in top condition. If you want to have a chat about it, give me a buzz.

After writing this, i want to play there again now, might head for the open day next Thursday.
