They used to show Minder at around lunch time. The original unedited version.

Their GAA and rugby coverage is always good.

They had some cracking comedies in the early years of TG4, C.U Burn and Gleann Ceo were excellent, still hold up well after all these years.

I loved Hollywoood Anocht from the early days, it was basically a review of upcoming cinema releases, I would learn more Irish in that half an hour than in a month in school with the absolute backward fooking sheite 30 years behind the times rubbish we were subjected to in school, no wonder the language went to absolute death in school.

Their worst decision ever was changing the name from TNaG to TG4 after TV3 went live, why would you put yourself number 4 when you were number 3 from the outset. I remember the launch well, I do like some of the documentaries they show and they have also showed some good first show English shows where nobody else risked which is a little odd them being an Irish language channel but good non the less. They need to go HD on Saorview soon.

Loved Rí Rá. Half the show was sketch show while the other half was reality/docusoap following people deserted in a remote island.

BBC4 went live before BBC Choice became BBC3. Just sayin'. :o:);)

Ros na Rún has to be mentioned at some point, of course - it's good fun seeing a clip from each year on TG4's site.

    Ros na Rún

Just beat you to it. :o:D:);)

They've had several dating shows over the years, though it's probably fair to say that Paisean Faisean remains the best one by quite a bit.

And their Oscailt and Lasair series of short films were excellent - particularly Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom. "An bhfuil tusa ag labhairt liomsa?" :D:);)

An Bronntanas, The Running Mate, Rásaí na Gaillimhe, Corp+Anam have been uploaded here, among others, with more to come over the year.

There's a great gearrscannán there atm too, called Lipservice.

New additions seem to go up each week on a Friday or Saturday.

Ros na Rún, Rásaí na Gaillimhe, Seacht, and An Crisis would be the stand-outs for me, but that's only the tip of the iceberg - so many cracking documentaries, Hector's travel shows at the time were more tongue in cheek than anything else in the genre, and loads of other great shows over 20 years. It'd be a hard push to name as many RTÉ or TV3 originals that even compare.

I also love that TG4 still have in the flesh announcers before a lot of their programming, long after most other stations have done away with that.

Lipservice is great - also check out Tubberware which is up there, it's another gearrscannán from Paul Mercier and equally as enjoyable.

Seachtar na casca was one of the best shows about 1916 I've seen. Far far better than rebellion.

    Survivor

TnaG/TG4 Bought in some great shows as well as making some top notch homemade shows.

I know all the cool kids find ways to watch them elsewhere much earlier, but TG4 shows quality American Imports in full at a decent hour, the only other channels in these parts to do so are maybe Channel 5 and 5*

Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, The Wire, Justified etc etc. No UK Channel gave Breaking Bad a full run.

    Lots of excellent documentaries too.

I wonder if RTE have intentionally copied TG4 by doing away with all their male weather presenters except Gerry Murphy...? :o:D;)

They may well be the only terrestrial TV station in Ireland or Britain doing in-vision continuity now - UTV NI abandoning the practice earlier this week with their adoption of the current ITV look.

And why stop when you have the likes of Mairéad Ní Chuaig...? :D:):););)

I haven't watched TG4 in a long while, but now's a good as time as any. I do remember watching some really good Fíorscéal episodes. And The Wire!

    I'd add Nashville

    And now Mr. Robot

And they even made their very own Western called 'An Klondike'.

It's the best drama series that has been on any Irish channel in a long time and I think the only TG4 show that made a mark outside of Ireland - An Klondike sold to Netflix and there is meant to be a second season in the pipeline.

    Curb Your Enthusiasm.

    All Ireland Gold.

    Laochra Gael.

    Club championships.

They even managed to sneak coverage of an Old Firm league cup tie a few years back!!

Fantastic original documentaries- The one about the Irish soldiers who were pall-bearers at JFK's funeral deserves a mention.

And they covered Wimbledon for a few years, too.

Even snooker is among the sports they've covered:

That reminds me they had Rugbai Gold.

TG4 has been very very good to Rugby fans too. From memory they were the first Irish based channel to show the Celtic League in Rugby.

RTE came in for a season or two in the 2010's but TG4 have been there since 2003 or 2004.

To be fair to them RTE had shared the rights with TG4 for four seasons, and that was following a period when Setanta had exclusive rights. I must say however that sports is generally the only think I watch on the station.
Their worst decision ever was changing the name from TNaG to TG4 after TV3 went live, why would you put yourself number 4 when you were number 3 from the outset.

Because it was still the analogue era, LCNs were up to the individual user to assign rather than set by EPGs, and having been gazumped for the "3" position as they saw it, they saw a need to lay claim to "4" lest another channel came along and did exactly that. And to be fair to TV3, they had been granted their contract under that name long before TnaG went on air and it was behind the scenes difficulties (including at one point a decision of the IRTC to terminate their contract that then went to a JR) that stopped them going on air for another eight years.

Yep, have to say Survivor was unmissable TV back when it started. It spawned off plenty of these reality survivor/jungle TV shows we see now including I'm a Celeb GMOOH.

TG4 were the first to bring the OC. 1st and 2nd series were excellent.

Pop 4 did a great job in promoting new and Irish music weekly, whereby RTE gave up, and Channel 6 had just one or two years before 3e ditched music for numerous family guy repeats.

What the f*** is Channel 6?

It ran for about 2 years then TV3 bought it and re-branded it 3e.

I'm pretty sure U2 had something to do with it.

It kicked off right at the end of the Boom and crashed just like the Boom around the late noughties before TV3 took it over.

I watched Channel 6 only for Michelle Doherty. :o:o;)

    nightshift.jpg?resize=303%2C321

Getting back on topic, Pop 4 was basically a Gaeilge version of RTE's Top 30 Hits - and both were produced by Andy Ruane and his Like It Love It company.

Yet Pop 4 managed to outlive Top 30 Hits by a decade.  :D:D

I watched it rather a lot, too, when Róisín Ní Thomáin hosted in the mid-2000s. (Her hair was a bit shorter back then, mind.) ;)

They have shown a lot of very good Scandinavian shows in the last few years:
    Borgen
    Arne Dahl
    Follow The Money

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭Ciaran_B

Mostly their sports coverage; GAA and cycling. And some of the documentaries were very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,808 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

When I was a kid; I watched a show featuring that little troll called Hugo or something. It was very enjoyable for it was back in the day. It was a game show for Kids that played the game via their landline telephone. There was a witch in it called Syclla which scared the bejaysus out of me when I was little.

I also used to watch cartoons on it that were dubbed in Irish like Batman Beyond & Spongebob Squarepants.

Now; I watch the odd documentary & the rugby coverage. It is done very well for a viewers perspective.

For it's 20th year; it's needs to be in HD on Saorview because the SD picture quality has somewhat suffered when I look at it now.

Some of the documentaries are amazing. Loved ones about dusty Springfield. The bachelors. Joe dolan. The country and western competitions are quite good as well since sbb is no longer a judge.

Was very dussapointed with tg4 junior eurovision series. The week jedward were the judges. Was the week the best act of the series was on it. And they didn't even get placed. Not only was said act the best . But they were also the most fluent irish speakers. Sorta wonder is this competition another tg4 bit of a fix. ?

Hugo was a Danish import, apparently.

Spongebob and Dora the Explorer must be the two biggest cartoons that they've dubbed - although they've also done the Cramp Twins, Samurai Jack and Arthur.

Perhaps a veil should be drawn over their attempt to dub South Park, though. :o;)

Hey, it's just like every other talent show - popularity matters as well as ability. :o;)

That said, they did send a good singer and song to Bulgaria last year.
