What time do you have dinner?

When I was growing up we always had our dinner at about 7pm, with very few exceptions.

These days, what with me working from home and away from home part time, I find I eat my evening meal any time between 7.30 and 10pm ....even later at times.

I suppose if you have a family and children it's important to have a set, regular meal time. But what time do you eat at?

And do you sometimes skip a large meal for a series of evening snacks?

    Thoughts?

is dinner every day a thing? Not something that's really done in our house. We generally have a proper dinner on a Sunday, eat out maybe once a week together, rest of time, you make something for yourself. Sandwich, cereal, noodles. The thoughts of having to make and eat 7 dinners a week to me seems a bit mad. But we would have done it as kids

I would think most people eat dinner every day?

Usually between 7.30 and 8.30. Can be later if either myself or the missus is running late.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Depends.. usually between 8 and 9, but it can be an actual "dinner", snack, cereal or nothing at all if I had a big lunch earlier in the day.

Why bother if its that late? Just go to bed and have a big breakfast. I hate having dinner after 7, unless you are out at a restaurant.

We have dinner usually around 5.30-6.00

You live off sandwiches, cereal and noodles for your main meal most days of the week?? What about vegetables, meat or fish or staples like pasta, rice or potatos? Doesn't sound like a very nutritional diet. Dinner doesn't have to be like a formal Sunday type roast with starters and desert. A simple, healthy main meal can be cooked and served in under 30 minutes (stir fries etc)

I try and eat before 8pm most nights as I don't like going to bed with a full stomach - not good for calorie burning either although in France and South America, I believe eating dinner at 10pm or later is considered fairly normal.

Are you not hungry before then? I'm usually starving by 5pm

I'm home from work around 5:30. Depending on after school activities, dinner is between 6&7. I often have it ready in the slow cooker. Hubbie is home between 6:30 and 7:30 as he sometimes goes for a run after work and doesn't always eat with me and the boys.

Because I want a decent meal instead of a snack? I can't remember the last time I got out of work before 5, let alone sitting down to dinner :pac:

I'm guessing we have very different body clocks, I usually skip breakfast and like to have a decent dinner. I rarely get to sleep before 12 so eating a 8 or 9 isn't an issue.

Sorry but it sounds like the worst lifestyle, unhealthiest diet and strange family life.

The vast majority of people have dinners every single day of their of lives as it's enjoyable as well as being very handy in staying alive and getting the correct food into you.

The idea of noodles and cereal as main meal of the day sounds awful to me.

used to have my dinner after midnight (as i work evening times) but now ill have it before i start work

Dinner was my something to look forward too after work but the weight gain and trouble sleeping got rid of that habit lol

The guy has liberal eating habits and its fukking up his family?!

When I was a kid you'd know the gaffs owned by Country folk cos they'd have the dinner at 1 or 2pm. The Dubs always had it in the evening.

I don't see the point of having dinner (or " tea" as some still call it) before 6.30pm unless you're up very early in the morning. I know many farmers have their main dinner at lunchtime. Its interesting how different cultures and countries have their dinner at. The Spanish often don't eat before 9pm, whereas the Dutch have dinner very early, as soon as they get home from work.

I think us Irish have become a bit more continental in our dinner habits, eating later than previously. When I was a kid back in the 1980s, most of my friends had their family dinner/tea at 6pm or even earlier, whereas our family dined at about 7 or a little later was was seen by my friends as a bit odd at the time.

Nowadays, I eat around 8 or 9pm but I won't make a big meal unless I'm hungry. And as I currently live alone, cooking for one can be a right hassle.

Normally have dinner at dinner time

I have my grub, generally, around the 20.00 - 21:00 mark. I'll not eat a thing, all day, till then. To do so could ruin my appetite and then I wouldn't fancy my meal.

I also tend to lock on to my latest favourite meals too. Right now, it's steak, chips and mushy peas. I buy half a dozen steaks and some oven chips each week. That's my feed, every night (except Town Day, when I have two bacon and egg sarnies). Probably eat this for months now. I like it. So, why not?

Last 'Flavour of the Months' was chilli. Before that, beef stew. But, yeah. One feed a day. Pretty much in the same hour window. I'm happy :)

Usually between 6 and 7, sometimes a bit later if I get home later, or cooking something that takes longer.

It's my favourite part of the day, winding down when coming home from work and starting to cook our dinner. :)

Ah the usual judgy posts if you don't subscribe to the perceived "norm".

I might have dinner once or twice a week. Other than that it's coffee, fruit, cereal, sandwiches, Oh and cake :)

My preference would be 6.30/7 but I don't want my toddler eating dinner on her own so end up having it with her around 5 and then end up snacking all evening

Anywhere from 19:00 to 20:30 depending on my schedule for that day.

When I was a kid, you could set your clock by what time the dinner was put in the table.

Now, we try to all eat together, if my daughter has a class after school either myself or Mrs Slug will hold off on dinner till she's home. Other than that, 6:30pm.

At 6 pm. As I'm only working part time it's easy enough to cook that early.

Usually around 8.30-9pm. I don't arrive home from work most days til between 7-7.35pm so it depends on whether or not I want a quick and easy meal (8.30pm dinner) or something a bit more complicated.

Dinner in my house is at 4.30 when the teenagers get in from school. They're usually hangry so need feeding before speaking.
Small snack before the younger ones head to bed at 7, they have breakfast at 7am and lunch at school at 12.30 they're starving by 4 so I get them all fed at once and I'm not cleaning the kitchen at feet up time.
Saturday and Sunday dinner is at 2 and then a sandwich or toasty at about 6.
With 5 kids the house has to be like clock work or it descends into chaos very quickly.

(i sometimes cheat midweek and cook a huge pot of stew or bolognese that'll do 2 days :) )

Dinner time varies depending on the wine. Allowing the wine time to breath means dinner will be 9 or after. Decanting the wine is quicker hence an earlier dinner.
Necking the wine usually starts before leaving work at 5:30

I have a big breakfast, medium lunch and a small dinner.

Some evenings, depending on what I'm doing and how big my lunch was, 'dinner' could just be a cup of tea with a couple of pieces of dark chocolate or some fruit.

I couldn't eat a proper dinner every evening, I'm just not hungry enough.
A big plate of food not long before bed time isn't something I could do on a regular basis.

One o clock. Every day, without fail. Meat and two veg.
All work stops until Home and Away is over unless its ploughing, sowing, spraying, silage, harvesting time, a mart day or a show day. Then anything goes.

I don't eat breakfast so a decent sized lunch about 1 keeps me going till about 6.30. Any later and I'm starving! Weekends I have dinner any time between 1 and 10! #fulltimemadbastard

I would commit murder if I didn't have three meals a day. I love my dinner, if I had to miss a meal it definitely would not be dinner. I love to cook so enjoy the creativity in making a meal from scratch. I used to work shifts so had lots of time to cook dinners. Since I moved to 9am-5pm, I tend to bulk cook as I am wrecked in the evenings. It takes a lot of imagination to make decent freezable dinners! We usually have it at around 7pm.

I would like to take the more European approach to it which is that "lunch" would be their main meal of the day and "dinner" would be a light snack of cheese and meat and maybe a bread.

The earlier I eat my main meal - the better I feel. After it. In bed that night. And getting up the next day. Dunno why. Just my metabolism I get.

But work and life get in the way so I am the more light breakfast - light lunch - big dinner type. I do all the cooking as my girlfriends can barely boil an egg, or do an omelette, or oven-pizza without something burning. The food. The utensils. Or usually both.

So the time to eat dinner tends to be based on when I get home from work. But I love cooking - as much as a hobby as a daily task - so it can take some time to prepare as I sometimes go all out.

So depending on work finish time - and the meal in question - dinner in our place can be anything from 5pm to 9pm. And sometimes we would aim to have dinner together as a family. And sometimes a separate dinner for the kids and a meal with just me and the girlfriends after the kids are in bed. So that can affect time too.

Which is all a bit annoying in a way as in every other area of my life I am a perfectionist and anal stickler for routine and time table. And a variable time for main meal can throw that out entirely.

Well that's the thing, if you have one main meal, which is usually lunch for me, you wouldn't really care about the other meals. Breakfast, I could take it or leave it. If I do take it, it'll be light enough. Yogurt, or fruit, maybe cereal.
Lunch is when I'm hungry. I could have soup and sandwich, chips, rice, curry, fish. Whatever. When I eat that I'm generally good for the day. Dinner time, noodles, cereal, sometimes nothing. Depends. No sense in eating for the sake of it

Dinner at 5.30 most days. Lunch on a Saturday instead. I don't bother with lunch on weekdays and just have coffee and biscuits around midday.

I just stuff my face constantly. It would be very hard to draw a dividing line somewhere and define it as 'dinner'.
