07 Mondeo cop car?

I was diving home on Monday night and a unmarked garda car had pulled over a car at the lights across from Dunnes at west side.

It was a 07 white ford Mondeo. Was this two lads acting the maggot? Surely to God the guards aren't driving around in 10 year old cars? I couldn't see the reg full at the time.

Has anyone seen that car before? The only unmarked car I've seen pulling on that road is a dark blue/black one.

    "Cop" car? Are you American?

On topic, afaik Gardai don't use old cars but then I don't know for sure.

They have a 04 Ford Focus in Limerick (unmarked)

Jaysus, shur FBD wouldn't even insure that if it had normal "SD&P" mileage on it!

"You must be able to agree with all of the following assumptions in order to take out a valid Policy of Insurance with us.
The Quick Car Insurance quote assumes that your car is under 8 years old "

The guards are actually rolling around in day in day out in something one of Ireland's home grown insurers wouldn't cover you to go as far as the shop for milk in.

The benefits of not needing insurance.

Depends on your point of view. If there are major irish insurers unwilling to cover these cars then i don't see why the guards should suffer them for general use.

Seen an old Mondeo on the longmile road too. Armed Garda pulled someone. Looked like an 05 or something. Was surprised at how old the car was. I suppose if they are well maintained and running good, then what harm. Getting great value for money there aren't we?

i was pulled over last year on the M7 by a 2003 Focus .. perfect unmarked car for traffic work, i had to look twice to even realise it had its lights on.

There is no age limit on Garda vehicles, just a mileage limit. Garda policy requires that cars be replaced no later than when they clock up 160,000 km.

Ive seen them use a 02 mondeo up until two weeks ago

As far as im aware the end of life for garda cars is 300,000 km.
Now unless that has changed very recently which i doubt it has as 160,000 km is less than 100,000 miles.

As for 07 mondeos there is plenty of them still around and older i see them every day of the week.

The policy has always been 100,000 miles which was adjusted to 1600,000 km in 2005. The policy is to replace at 160,000 which is the estimated economic mileage for the fleet but I suppose this is dependent on funding etc, in reality there are cars that have reached 300,000 km + in the force, it's only a policy at the end of the day, not a legal requirement.

    http://m.independent.ie/regionals/argus/news/garda-car-driven-round-the-globe-seven-times-26943389.html
A GARDA patrol car with 280,000km on the clock – equivalent to seven times around the globe – is on 24 hour duty in the Dundalk district, the Argus has learned.
The Argus also learned that another patrol car is in full time use in Ardee with over 300,000 kilometres clocked up.[/quite]

Policy is 300,000 km for saloon cars and commercials are 500,000 subject to inspection i repair them every day of the week.

Pre-recession maybe, when they used to sell off the cars. Now it's 300,000km for cars and 500,000km for jeeps/vans. That's down to the manufacturers safety limits, if they could get away with running them forever, they would.

360 vehicles must be put out of service this year having passed 300,000km, a safety limit

There is also talk of the newer cars being kept until 500,000km.

Mr Redmond said the new cars will be allowed clock up 500,000km: “Remember, these are just family cars, they are not specially built for police. They are not meant to be driven to such an extent.”

(Edit: just beaten to it by martinr5232)

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

    A non sequitur.

Insurer choosing not to offer cover doesn't mean the vehicle is inherently dangerous.

07D Mondeo = Gard car in my head, once very common

Other things to look out for:

    No number plate surround
    No dealer sticker
    No towbar
    Sundry aerials
    Non metallic colour
    Steel wheels, no hubcaps

& well worn grab handles, due to the four big lads stuffed into it!

I'm sure if less of their annual budget went on salary etc. they'd have newer cars.

There's an unmarked Nissan jeep used by Traffic Corps in Mayo and it's either a 1999 or 2000. I see it regularly with cars pulled over.

A batch of the early 07 White Mondeo's were sold off by the Gardai - one of my contacts in a local company was driving one and I see one with a very similar reg number, most morning's on the way in to work.

Quite often park next to a dark blue 07, unmarked Mondeo, at the local fuel station. Had to stifle a giggle while following the driver out last time I saw him - he'd popped in for doughnuts :p

Another one to look out in '07 Mondeo to spot a Garda vehicle is the missing central segments from the 3rd brake light.

Only with steelies or hubcaps. Seen a handful of red mondeo's that year with factory standard alloys. Not a garda car.

There are mondeos out there with alloys usually only the v6s though.

I've seen plenty Cop cars older than 07. The vans especially can be ancient.

Most of those Mondy's are probably 1.6's as well

The majority of Gardai fleet Mk3 Mondeos were 2.0 litre petrol with odd specs. A few pop up on donedeal every now and then being advertised with one previous careful owner. :pac:

There are plenty of older cars used as unmarked cars. The oldest I've seen is a late 90's Corolla driven by a guy with a track suit. I saw it pass me in town with the siren and lights on back around 2014.

    07ish Mondeos are pretty common.

I got stopped by a gold mk2 punto a few years ago in Drumcondra, although I don't think traffic was they're primary concern as the two guards were wearing stab vests and ended up just giving me a talking to and sending me on my way.

There are now a few Peugeot saloons in the fleet. There was an unmarked one on the M50 and you would never know it was a Garda car.

I used have a Toyota with some additional aerials on it, often got the thumbs up from patrol cars. Good times.

As far as I understand it, the manufacturer will not guarantee the cars or parts beyond 300,000km, and it's for liability reasons that the Garda withdraw them, even if it's in good condition.

It became a major problem a few years ago when they weren't being replaced.

Garda Parker said that, on average, at least one vehicle was removed from the garda fleet each day because they reached the 300,000km limit after which manufacturers would not guarantee them.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

Perhaps its different for the Gardai using cars, but I don't see where the 300,000km limit comes from?

If say an airbag didn't go off when it should have on a 7 year old car with 350,000km(high but not inconceivable mileage), then the manufacturer would be getting sued.

Manufacturers will only guarentee the chassis to 300k so its not feesable for the guards to keep them after that.
