I think I would not start just before winter sets in. I would also learn a useful, portable trade that you could do for extra money, and I would not do it without a car. I had a friend who would do this every summer in the US; he even rented his apartments for just nine months at a time.

Just bring lube and leave your sense of shame and morals at home and you'll never be stuck for a place to stay.
Though you could end up stuck in some sticky places.

You could get a lend of a sleeping bag from a tramp in lieu of rent boy activities.

    It's win win right there.

BTW, bunking a train a couple of times could solve your tent problems, could possibly be put up in Mountjoy for a while - see you through the winter.

Maybe if you were living in spain or somewhere with decent weather. One or two nights in Irish weather would break all but the most determined. The cold will be one issue that you can avoid while you're in your sleeping bag. You can get accustomed to getting out in the cold. I lived without central heating during some of the really cold winters we got here, used to have to get up have a shower in the freezing cold then get dressed. The damp is another thing, everything you own will be damp. That could cause real problems.

Then there's the cost of constantly moving. Even with a tent you're going to have to pay to pitch it a lot of the time, you can't just set up where ever you want. While the costs are low (probably around €10) most camp sites will probably be closed this time of year. If you're using public transport and thumbing you probably won't be able to get to a lot of camp sites. You'd need a car, which drives up your costs. You could sleep in the car which would save you from camping.

Food is the next problem, how are you going to prepare it? You could survive on a basic diet or eat out all the time.

I drove down to the south of spain this year and while it was an adventure it was an expensive way to travel. On the way down I camped out and even though France and spain have better weather it was still horrible. France was nice but spain was unbearable. The heat was horrible, campsites have notoriously bad showers, using being friendly to the environment as an excuse to give you as little water as they could.

Food again was a problem, we had to keep a stock of it for cooking ourselves.

It can be done, people do it all the time, but loose the romantic notion of the easy life on the road, it won't be easy, it'll be a nightmare at times interjected with some amazing moments you wouldn't have seen otherwise.

You could practice "skiing" with two tramps.

Then cuddle in their sleeping bags

Anybody know any hippy colonies I could get into?

The Japanese have a saying, "heat the body, not the house". So traditional Japanese houses are unheated, but they cuddle up to a fire pit and sleep with huge duvets that feel like sleeping under the bed, lol. They drink lots of hot tea and have hot soup and warming food. They dress warmly. You can use some of those tactics but I bet it is a lot more effective if you've ever wintered in a traditional Japanese house.

Grand if you are Che Guevara and live in a warm climate. Hit the road on your motorbike and look for a revolution to be in.

But this is ireland. Sleeping under the stars sucks once the days are shorter than the nights.

Not to long ago wasn't there a journalist who went rough for a documentry and died.

He was prepared , he was also educated enough to know the risks and still lost his life

If you can't afford a sleeping bag and a tent how are you going to pay for the things that are really going to matter for a year....like FOOD or do you plan on dumpster diving, shoplifting and chicken poaching?

You could buy a sleeping bag for less than €2 on eBay. As a bonus you'll get to look like a slug wrapped in tinfoil. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Emergency-Survival-Thermal-Sleeping-Bag-Gear-Kit-For-Outdoor-Hiking-Camping-UK-/152195638867

I can afford a sleeping bag, just would rather start without, I'll pick one up along the way, was packing some sh1t and nearly about to head out, I'm honestly not coming back to this ****, I've had my own business, plenty of money, but fcuking heart ache all along, the less you have, the better, I don't care about material crap anymore, my soul needs to be free, and hopefully will be soon.

Op, you're biggest challenge will living like a homeless person without looking like a homeless person. If you can't wash regularly and look presentable you'll probably end up in prison or a mental asylum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭Mr_Muffin

Just go on the dole and get a free house, free money and the winter allowance. No need to go camping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,809 ✭✭✭Speedwell

No. Slapper, your hardest challenge will be leaving behind the part of yourself that you're trying to leave behind. It's too easy to go to a new place and suddenly find that you're slipping back into your old self. Take it from someone who's been in many homes and is now an immigrant. I think I made it work this time. :)

I've finally got a plan and a purpose, and I won't be homeless, but part of a community that appreciates what I got to give. Took me 41 years to find it, and all it took was me asking, boards.ie of all places.
