Slightly insulting romantic songs

Was listening to 10cc earlier today singing "im not in love" and it's kind of a slightly insulting romantic song.

Looked it up and this is apparently the meaning behind the song...

“It’s just a silly phase I’m going through”, sings Eric Stewart, who co-wrote the song with Graham Gouldman. However, the song was inspired by a comment his wife, Gloria – then of eight years, now of nearer 50 – made, that he didn’t tell her he loved her often enough.
Stewart told Sound on Sound in 2005 that he didn’t want to devalue the meaning of the phrase by saying it too frequently, but her thoughts made him “try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you,' while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship."

so any other almost insulting romantic songs posters can think of and why are they so effective?

The only other one I can think of now is "Jealous Guy" by John Lennon. He shows a very vulnerable side in that song which is what i think makes it work.

    Billy Joel's 'Always A Woman'.
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
She only reveals what she wants you to see
    She hides like a child
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth but she'll never believe you
She'll take what you give her as long as it's free
    She steals like a thief
    She takes care of herself
She'll carelessly cut you then laugh while you're bleedin'

But she's always a woman to me...

Yeah, she sounds like a fcuking nutcase to be me, Billy, tbf.

of course the song is about him Carly, otherwise you wouldn't be singing about him and his vanity. If it wasn't about him then the lyrics would have to go...

"You're so vain, You probably think this song is about you, don't you....you're so vain..You probably think this song is about you, don't you, don't don't you... ... well it's not it's about the other guy nananananaaaaa".

Nothing is insulting unless it targets a specific person, not some notional person.

Thanks to the guys that provided the youtube links. Great songs.

REM - The one I love. Not the happy clappy song the title suggests...
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love

In the last verse it switches to "another prop has occupied my time"

    I've been around for you
I've been up and down for you
But I just can't get any relief
I've swallowed my pride for you
I've lived and lied for you
But you still make me feel like a thief

Still a class tune though :)

Or course personal experiences come into play in song writing.

What your suggesting is that one wrote and sometimes sang the song specifically with that person in mind.

It that were the case it would be libellous. :)

(You just said to me that you loved me?)
I know I did (You said you loved me!)
I know I did but I think I'm going around the bend now we must end...
    (WHAT!!??)

    Not insulting but honest...

Stiff Little Fingers - Touch and Go.

Looking back it's funny that we never lied
That night we met when were both alone
We knew at once that what we'd want was just that night
    Knew it couldn't be forever
Cause we each told of another
And then found something all our own

We both agreed we felt the need that goes skin deep
We said up front that's all we'd want and so
We took the love that felt so good and had to be
Just a case of touch and go

When we'd got that usual block out of the way
We both relaxed, sat back and felt so sure
Saw eye to eye and looked each other in the face
Hours we talked with warmth and laughter
And we still could talk more after
In the dark up on the seventh floor

We both agreed we felt the need that goes skin deep
We said up front that's all we'd want and so
We took the love that felt so good and had to be
Just a case of touch and go

Some might joke I came and went
    And snigger she's a whore
But there's two people know it meant much more

Looking back was not allowed that morning so
We stuck by what we'd said
    Rose and left without regret
But for a moment it was touch and go

We both agreed we felt the need to touch and go
But oh, you know, it was touch and go

    Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen.

The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken

    Jazz standard "My Funny Valentine".

    My funny valentine
    Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
    Your looks are laughable
    Unphotographable

Yet you're my favourite work of art

Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak

When you open it to speak
    Are you smart?

Brilliant song but wouldn't do much for your self esteem.
Won't you be my number two
Me and number one are through
There won't be too much to do
Just smile when I feel blue.

And there's not much left of me

    Is it worth the energy
I leave it up to you

"We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off"

Not a word from your lips
You just took for granted that I want to skinny dip
A quick hit, that's your game
But I'm not a piece of meat, simulate my brain, no

The night is young, so are we
Let's just get to know each other slow and easily, oh, oh
Take my hand, let's hit the floor
Shake our bodies to the music
Maybe then you'll score, oh, oh

So come on baby, won't you show some class
Why'd you have to move so fast?

We don't have to take our clothes off
To have a good time, oh, no
We could dance and party all night
And drink some cherry wine, oh, oh

Just slow down if you want me
A man wants to be approached cool and romantically, oh, oh
I've got needs just like you
    And if the conversation's good
Vibrations through and through, oh, oh

So come on baby, won't you show some class
Why'd you have to move so fast?

    [2x]
We don't have to take our clothes off
To have a good time, no, oh
We could dance and party all night
And drink some cherry wine, oh, oh

    [2x]
We don't have to take our clothes off
To have a good time, oh, oh
We could dance and party all night
And drink some cherry wine, oh, oh

I still can't get over some people's desire to be insulted.

Going out of your way to declare yourself a victim doesn't make you a victim. It doesn't mean you are entitled to sympathy or the moral high ground, actually it's the opposite since you are taking those from real victims.
