My laptop all of a sudden has stopped connecting to my wifi, now the wifi is working as everything connects fine and the laptop worked grand till now...I have goggled and goggled and it seems the wifi receiver card thing is deactivated and I can't reactivate it through the control panel menu

I bought an external USB WiFi receiver and installed the software and it seems it connects but I still can't get a page to load with it

Would anyone have any idea what's up or what I should be doing?

Im not an expert by any means but the same thing happened to my laptop last week.

I dont know if its the same issue but my antivirus was out of date.
I installed new antivirus and then laptop connected to wifi.

Dont know if this helps or even if its right but worked for me

    Hi
    Thanks for your comment
My anti virus is up to date so I'm guessing its actually something internal on the laptop that has gone wonky
I've had this laptop about 6 years and this is the first time this ever happended
    So bloody annoying

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,585 ✭✭✭jca

Does the laptop see your network? Maybe the router changed the channel to a number that the wifi card can't see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,285 ✭✭✭bonzodog2

You might try a live Linux CD/DVD image (or USB if your laptop will boot from USB) to determine whether its a hardware/software issue. Also check physical switches, Fn/F-key options for your model and Windows network options, and most recent drivers.

Something similar happened to my laptop as well with our WiFi - I ended up removing the WiFi name from the control settings and re- entering it again and it connected them - don't know if you have tried that yet ?

Its actually connects as it shows connected in the wireless network connextions but when I try open a page I get nothing

I was going to attack a few pics of what it shows bit in don't have option to do so on my phone

The fact I even got an external USB WiFi receiver and it connects to the WiFi but still won't show a page has me stumped here

I've reset the network adapters a few times as that's were I thought the prob was

Can you restart and go into Safe Mode with Networking and see if it connects then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭golfcaptain

    Can you ping 8.8.8.8?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

How do I go into safe mode?

And I haven't a clue what you mean byping 8888 sorry....I've a basic understanding of computers but I normally get there eventually lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭golfcaptain

    Ah sorry.

Assuming you're on Windows, open a command prompt (type cmd.exe from the run menu).
A new window with a black background should open.
    Type "ping 8.8.8.8" (without quotes)
You should either get a response like "Reply from 8.8.8.8 = ...." or a "Request Timed Out" or similar error message.

    Yeah I've windows vista thanks
I entered the ping and comes back saying ping transmit failed error code 1231

    What does this mean?

I'm trying to go into he safe mode here see if that makes any difference

    Tks

Cool, the ping failing just tells us that it's not just a browser issue and you are indeed not connected to a network.

So can you confirm that you see the wireless status as B in this example?

OK so what do you think I should do now?

Trying to put it into safe mode and it just freezes on a black screen with the list of files it is trying to load

Those are the drivers (small programs the system needs to run) the system is loading. Is it freezing while still displaying them? If so, what is the last thing on the screen you see? If not, does it just go to a black screen?

Also, to confirm you are launching safe mode by pressing F8 after restarting the PC then selecting Safe Mode? Don't try Safe Mode With Networking just yet.

Hi - yeah mine was saying connected as well but wouldn't load any pages - I just removed that WiFi name from the wireless connections and then set it up again and re entered the password and it worked fine then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

OK when I try put it in safe mode it keeps freezin....it freezes at the same point on windows\systems32\drivers\avgidshx.sys

I tried changing the wifi name which is sky but it wont let me

Tried disconnecting it for a while and still didn't work

    Can't understand it

Hi sorry to hear you're still having trouble. Did you happen to install/update any AVG software recently?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,017 Mod ✭✭✭✭yoyo

Make sure you only have the one anti virus program installed. Also I would uninstall AVG even just temporarily to see if the connectivity issues resolve.

    Nick

Will you first of all start using the administrator account.

Here's how to activate it link

There's still any number of potential causes at this stage but the driver you said it's freezing on (avgidshx.sys) is a part of AVGs intrusion detection system. It's possible something necessary for it to work has become corrupted. So, lets try uninstalling AVG first and see if you can get into Safe Mode. I see you've already tried doing so but please try the steps to disable and uninstall AVG at the following link:
    https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlName=Disabling-AVG-when-Windows-cannot-start

If you can try that please and post back if you can now get into safe mode?
    Ted111 wrote: »

I'd recommend against this at this stage until we can get into Safe Mode, especially as we'll be disabling the anti-virus. Any specific reason to use it right now?

Don't want to sound to silly but as I can't get wifi to the laptop can I download the avg removal tool to another computer and save it to a memory key then put it on my laptop? Or is there another handier way of doing it?

Can you connect with a cable??

Might just a case the wifi drive needs to to reinstalled .

Open the "Run" dialog box by pressing and holding the Windows key, then press the R key ("Run").

    Type devmgmt.msc

This will open up the device manger .

Look for network adaptes click the arrow on left to expand,

Do you see any yellow warning symbols ?

Also if can post a screen shot of the device manager results .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

Ok so I managed to get avg off the laptop eventually but still no joy trying to get online it's just doing the same thing

Should I try it now into safe mode maybe?

Hi...no I can't connect via a cable unfortunateky...I did check in device managers as you say and there no warning signs even when I click onto the wireless adapter it says it's working fine even though when I run a diagnostics it says there may be an issue with a network adapter on the computer

It connects to the wifi but won't show a web page...I'm using my phone and I don't see any option to attach a pic and I know if I showed a few you would prob know right away

Yeah so long as you can't get into that it means there's still a problem.

That is normal, should be last driver to load. does it load after a minute or two waiting at this point?
Something important for us to know here, are you using wifi with fixed line broadband, or are you using one of those "dongle" internet devices?

OK maybe I didn't give it enough time I'll try it again and leave it a few mins and report back

I'm using fixed line broadband, as in I've a box plugged into the wall which send out the WiFi signal if that is clear enough lol I'm no techie

But I'll try that and come back again, cheers

OK so I tried loading it into safe mode ans no joy, it just stays on that file same as before, I tried it on just safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with prompts, I've left each sitting for about 10 mins to load and notin happens, laptop doesn't even sound like its doing anything either as in ya can tell it loading something with the slight loading noise if ya know what I mean

I don't want to select any of the lower option as I'm afriad of doing more damage as I haven't a clue what they do

Just to confirm, did you follow the steps in the link I posted to remove AVG completely?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,520 ✭✭✭learn_more

I'm on windows 7 and I get wifi connection problems from time to time, rare but happens.

First thing I do is mouse over the wifi icon on the taskbar, right click and select "Troubleshoot Problems".

It has sorted out problems for me automatically.

Yeah I went through those steps and then completed the removal using the tool

I've left it loading for ages in the 3. Safe mode option and it dosent go past that file everytime

What is the make & model of your laptop? Did any recovery/installation disks come with it? Do you have any options like "System Recovery" or "Startup Repair" on the menu where you select Safe Mode? Sorry for all the questions, I know it can be frustrating.

Can you boot into your BIOS settings and make sure wifi is enabled there? Unlikely to be the issue but just to double check. To get into BIOS, look for what key to press when the laptop is booting, before you see the Windows logo. It will likely say "Press F2 for Setup" or the like. Once in, look for an option to enable your wifi card. It may be under the heading of Onboard Devices/ Wireless/ WLAN or something similar.

Another thing to do before proceeding, can you run the System File Checker tool? To do this, open an elevated command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes). See https://support.microsoft.com/en-ie/kb/929833 for more info about this tool and how to open the elevated window.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

No I don't have any recovery disks I'm not I got any when I bought it tbh I don't remember any...under the safe mode menu there is an option that says repair computer and it's takes me to a system called the tech guys , the laptop was bought in curry's so I think it's there system I may be wrong though

I went Into the f2 option which is the bios I think and there is nothing that mentions wifi or internet whatsoever that I can see....I went into device manager and into network adpaters as when I run a diagnostics it's says there may be a problem with it but under devise status it says devise is working properly

I done the system file checker and it came back saying windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations

    Oh and it's a advent 5303 laptop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭golfcaptain

OK, I'm not familiar with that laptop or how Curry's setup their repair options unfortunately. I'd be surprised there's no options for wifi in the BIOS, can you post the menu headings please? Just need to make sure it's not disabled there. If you can also post the options under the Tech Guys menu? Hopefully there is one called "Startup Repair", you don't want anything called Restore or Reset.

    PS
If you can also try reinstalling the wireless drivers from this page too (the last one, WLAN drivers for Advent 5303):
    http://www.adventcomputers.co.uk/product-download-select/134

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

The headings in the BIOS menu are...main...info....advamced....security....power...

Ok the 4 options o the Tech Guys menu are...start Microsoft windows repair environment....reinstall windows....advanced options....

I tried to download that of the advent site and it says all the downloads are unavailable but I've emailed them to see what's up

When I click on repair option I'm asked for an admin password which i haven't a clue what it is, how would I reset or get that now lol sorry for sounding like such a dunce

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

What are the options under Advanced in the BIOS and the advanced options on the tech guys menu?

That may be a system account and it's perfectly normal for it to be disabled. It may just be how tech guys have it configured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭canhefixit

In the Tech Guys advanced it has....chkdsk....notepad.....command prompt

In the advance on bios it had 2 things ....execute disable bit (enabled).....ahci configuration (disabled)
