Nintendo-related, Mario is coming to iOS in time for the holidays. It will be a one button auto runner with single player stages and a multiplayer score attack. It will be a fixed price with no IAP.

Here is Shigeru Miyamoto announcing it at today's Apple event.

A shame that it missed when Endless Runner games were seemingly at their most popular, but I can imagine that this will do well.

    🤪

Better not be full of ads/F2P crap like most mobile stuff for a tenner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭marcbrophy

It's an endless runner style game and tbh I don't hold out much hope for it.

Sonic dash is an example of how far the genre can go.

There's just not enough there, is my inital opinion.

    I hope I'm proved wrong though :)

This looks a blast, probably buy it for the sons Ipad Mini2 at Xmas and for myself when the Android version is released.
Once it is a paid for app and not free it should avoid the micro purchases/ad revenue nonsense.
The game itself looks pretty cool tbh, but no reason it can't have been implemented as a bonus on any other version!

    Good hands-on preview on engadget:

Sounds like it has a lot of replayability.

Don't care for this game but the ad is very good. Its pricing and lack of an Android version yet hasn't helped.

I mean I'll happily pay a tenner for a decent, Nintendo mobile game. It's not like Nintendo don't have a basic level of trust when it comes to Mario.

The price is very fair since there is no IAP after the initial purchase.

It's an Apple timed exclusive (and I'd say they paid a fortune for the privilege) - Android will come out eventually.

Getting pretty good feedback from what I've seen so far too.

Looks like it needs an internet connection to work.

No ipad for the kids in the back of the car, so... :(

Setup a personal WiFi hotspot from your own phone and link the iPad to that?

Don't think I've seen that many people run with an Italian since Rocky

Wasn't the demo meant to be out? And if I buy it on the iPhone, can I download it later on the iPad or are they separate versions? Looking forward to this!

The Super Mario Run demo is now available at all the Apple Stores in Europe.

The Android version is going to be pirated within hours of sale, it'll be hacked and posted as an apk to be downloaded instead of bought.
And that is, at least one reason, why Nintendo have been slow to bring it to the format, as well as the big pot of cash Apple through their way for timed exclusivity.

^doesnt the fact you gotta always be online to play somewhat counter that piracy risk?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,617 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yep, 100%. Nintendo have gotten pretty good at countering piracy in the last few years.

That too will be hacked out of it.
    Won't take them long.
I'm happy to pay anyway, must pick it up for the ipad, get it again for my phone when the Android edition is released in the New Year.

It'll take up 205mb (if anyone is interested). 1 day to go!

You can play it on your iPad or iPhone as long as you are signed in with the same Apple ID. I've set up family sharing so myself and the gf can just use the 1 purchase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 201 ✭✭zambrotta11

Has anyone been able to download it? It still tells me it is coming soon on the App Store in my phone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,617 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

There is no concrete timing available.

Some say 5pm today (9am PST, noon EST).

I was thinking 5 or 6 pm myself, as this is the time most morning keynotes in the states are on over here!

Guess the rest of the world has to wait for America to wake up! :D

Just played the first level a few times, basically it's mario, on the iPhone 😠Mission accomplished it seems! I'll be buying it later for sure

Still not showing up for me, hopefully soon, looking forward to it!

    EDIT: never mind, downloading now!

I had it on notify but it didn't.

Went to home page of App Store and got it there.

It is good, better than most mobile games. But a tenner for this... I dunno.

Why buy Mario Run when you can play Sonic Dash, Sonic Dash 2, Sonic Jump Fever, and Sonic Racing are free? Sonic seems more mainstream now than Mario.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,752 ✭✭✭johnpatrick81

I've almost got all the black coins after a few shots of level 1. Having second thoughts on whether to splash out.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that the only thing you control is Mario's jumps? I've tried it and initial impression is that it's cute and fun but I feel like I'm not really controlling Mario, and therefore, not really playing a game. :(

Exactly, the fact you may time a jump slightly wrong and miss some coins - and cannot go back for them short of playing the level again is not good.
I realize it was announced as an endless runner, but give me classic Mario on NES, or even the SNES anytime.
Nice that Nintendo have brought it to the mobile platform, but for me, not worth the €10

Super Mario Run’s Strong Debut Clouded by Revenue Lag

......."The game was at the top of download rankings in 68 countries, but was the highest grossing game in only 14, according to researcher SensorTower. Nintendo shares closed 4.2 percent lower in Tokyo, wiping out about $1.5 billion in market value. Partner DeNA Co., which helped develop the title, fell 6.8 percent.".......

I know I said earlier that this was an easy tenner to spend, but after playing the trial for a bit, I was on the fence. I played through the first 3 stages (and 20 seconds of the fortress), got all the pink coins and thought "Hmmm..." - it was very easy.

I went back to it after a break and I grew to appreciate the challenge of the purple and black coins. From reviews, the basic tour can be finished easily in an hour, but if you're going for the coloured coins, it will take many multiples of that.

Tip: If you miss a coin, you don't need to restart. Touch the bubble icon at the top to float back to a place before the coin, and try again.

Investors are a fickle bunch (after the game has been on the market for only 12 hours).

Nintendo and DeNA Shares Tumble as Investors Show Super Mario Run Revenue Fears
Super Mario Run arrived on 15th December at about 12:30pm Eastern / 5:30pm UK time, to give two examples. That allowed the Tokyo stock market to react in trading on 16th December, and now that it's closed we can see that investors were rather concerned about early performance of the iOS app.

Nintendo's shares closed on 26,405 Yen, down 4.24% and reportedly equating to a drop of around $1.5 billion Yen in overall company value; DeNA shares dropped 6.8%.

Friend link for those who are interested. I'm enjoying this so far. I can see myself getting addicted and annoyed at getting all the coins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,681 ✭✭✭Wolverine359

Is there a reason it's only playable in portrait mode? While I like the ability to play it with just one hand, surely a landscape mode would have made sense. Has everyone completely given up on holding their phones in landscape view for everything from playing games to recording videos? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,617 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

People still playing? I'm playing in 15 minute spurts, currently going for purple coins. Haven't really played much with Toad Rally yet.

Still enjoying it a lot. Nintendo have done a great job with this.

People are turning their noses up at having only 24 levels, but if you're going for special coins there are really 48 levels (plus specials and bonus levels). I think the layouts are the same for pink and purple coins, but new platforms and obstacles appear for the black coins (so you have to relearn the layouts).

I've lost interest. Unfortunately the WiiU gamepad is as "mobile" as I'm gonna get. Perhaps if I was sitting on public transport for a long time each day I'd think differently. I'll never see my iPhone as a gaming device.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭tailgunner

I'm still playing - really like it. I'm trying not to move onto a new level till I've got all the black coins from the current one, so it hasn't felt short for me. Helps that I'm rubbish at it, of course.
