    Hi folks.

My wife will be changing her car in the next few weeks and is looking for recommendations.

She currently drives a 02 Mini One so isn't looking for a saloon car as she doesn't want to go massively bigger than her current motor.

She likes the look of the Golf but I feel for what you will get for €20k Golf wise you could get a better spec with others.

I like the Quashai and she is going to test drive one but we would like to get ideas for others.

All going well we will have a family in the next 12 months so a 4 door is a must, good boot space, safety features etc. She does a bit of long haul driving with work so comfort would be a factor too. Probably 15km per annum would be the mileage. Engine size probably a 1.6/1.8, not particularly drawn to petrol or diesel.

She has €20k plus whatever she would get in trade in for her own.

    Many thanks.

I'd try and sell the Mini privately, it's not going to be worth much to a dealer at at that age. Sell privately and negotiate a straight deal discount off the newer car.

    2015 Golf with decent spec:
    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Golf/1.6TDI-Highline/5853975326878575179/

If you want something more like a Qashqai then look at the Kia Sportage, tend to be higher spec and the boot is a bit bigger than the Qashqai's. Will have the balance of the Kia 7 year warranty too:

    Thanks Bazz.

What would you think the Mini is worth roughly?

As in if a garage would give us €2k then there isn't much point selling it privately for little more.

There is about 105k km on it.

At this time of year with students going back to college would be a great time to sell the mini.

What about a Honda Civic hatch?

You could negotiate up to 1000/1500 discount off the Golf/Sportage for buying it straight without a trade-in. You could try and sell the Mini yourself for around 1800/2000 which means your financially better off that way than trading it.

A 14 year old car is not going to be retailed by any of the branded dealers as it's too old and there is no profit in it for them. They will just sell it off to the trade or send it through auction as is. Of course it's not all plain sailing selling privately as you have to deal with time wasters and messers but I'd give it a go first before just trading it.

Did you even read the OP? She's not looking for a saloon car, yet alone a barge like the A6

You wouldn't be biased at all would you?

OP, some incredibly nice cars on the market for 20K. Would your OH be interested in a ford focus or seat leon?

    Focus:
    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/ford/focus/used-2016-161-ford-focus-zetec-5dr-1-dublin-fpa-6024458190360160421?SOURCE_ID=SOURCE_ID_FPA_FROM_FEAT_LIST

    Leon FR:
    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/seat/leon/used-2016-161-seat-leon-2-0tdi-150hp-kerry-fpa-200714622950734250

    Maybe a BMW 1 series:
    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/1-series/used-2014-141-bmw-1-series-114d-4dr-s-dublin-fpa-4998741051691636536

Or go mad and get a Merc:
    http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/mercedes-benz/a-class/used-2013-132-mercedes-benz-a-class-2-wicklow-fpa-7240735554352936436

Not these exact cars, but for 20K you have a lot of choice.

My better half drives a 1 series of the model linked albeit an auto. They are a fantastic car but rather cramped for any adults sitting in the back.

Its a nice looking motor alright but as I said above, all going well we will have a family in the not too distant future so she would be looking for something spacious in the back with decent boot space too.

You have just described a ford focus ;)

Seat are doing good deals at the moment on the Leon.

Golf mechanicals, decent space and spec. A demo/pre-reg FR 1.4tsi petrol should be in or around the budget. Even the SE has a decent spec on it and should have most, if not more toys than the Mini.

If it were up to me she would buy a Focus tbh but she isn't as sold on them as I am and my wife is not easily swayed!

Gonna get her to test drive one shortly anyway and see what she thinks.

How about an audi q3? A bit of height is useful for lifting things in and out of back seats, with less stooping. And its good for getting into cars with big bellies also. eg http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/audi/q3/used-2013-131-audi-q3-2-0-tdi-se-140b-dublin-fpa-200814630622897670

    Too big?

I sold cars for the past year so yes you should stick with the vw toyota brands in my view the new seats may be okay will be a few years until we know they wont hold their value as good.

I'll take that to mean no, you haven't driven or even sat in a new Seat.

    A WHOLE YEAR?? Well done!

And I've been selling them both in dealerships (finishing as a sales manager) and as a part time sole trader for the last 14 so now that credentials have been established, let's move forward.

I recommended the Seat Leon which is a member of the "vw brand" that you're championing. Its based on the current MQB platform, sharing its mechanicals with your favorites, the Audi A3 and VW Golf as well as the Audi Q2, Skoda Octavia and Superb as well as about half a dozen others.

As for values, your nearly correct, it will be worth less than an A3 in 3 years time but if you spec an A3 to the same spec as an FR Leon, its nearly €40,000. Will the A3 be worth €13,000 more than the Leon in 3 years? I doubt it. My original post suggested that it may be worth the OP's time to go and have a look as Seat are doing good deals at the moment on new ones.

Anyway, back to the OP, let us know how you get on. €20k is a nice chunk to be able to put into a car whatever you choose.

Right, so we have been out and about and she has narrowed it down to the Golf or the Focus.

Today she drove a 1.2 TSI Golf, 2014, price incl trading her own in was €18,750.

And a 1.6 Focus, 161, price incl her own was €19750 plus RTI cover and a full tank of fuel, I'd reckon we would be able to get that down to €19500.

My own personal opinion is the Focus by a country mile but she is still hung up on the Golf a bit.

What would you guys think is a better buy when all things are considered?

Ie the deal itself, potential for resale, comparative performance etc.

    Cheers.

Fords are cheap looking cars golfs are sturdy and well built with great resale value enough said. I have an Audi but would consider a Golf if I had to buy a different make.

I think the golf is the better car here. Not a VW fan or anything, just the Focus is underwhelming.
The 1.2 TSI engine is lovely for such a small thing.

You'd get a brand new Nissan Pulsar with decent spec for that Money, Winsdor will give you €4000 scrappage on the Mini which is more than it's worth elsewhere. Arguably nicer than the Qashqai for less money.

Not that I am telling you what to do... but for that sort of money.... it might be worthwhile checking out Suzuki Vitara.

There is a 1.6 petrol, and I think it is changing to a turbo 1.2 or 1.4 for late 2016.

I do rate the Jap cars for reliability.... if I do say so myself!!:D

Because for the most part they were nearly always outclassed by other brands, especially other japanese brands.

Cheap interiors and cheap build quality also didn't help.

Generally a lot cheaper though too, I'm pretty sure the Nissan Pixo was even a grand more expensive than the Suzuki Alto and the Nissan was just an uglier version of the same car.

Totally off point anyway, one for the off topic thread.
