World Cup Qualifier- Ireland vs Serbia

Noticed there was no thread for this yet.

This one has kind of snuck up on me, as these qualifiers often do after major tournaments. Hoping we can get a result, Serbia appear much improved under their new manager and will be out to win this game tonight. After a good showing at the Euro's we rightly can go into this game full of expectation.

My own prediction is a 0-0

    Hopefully it goes ahead now

It's not clear whether or not the game will take place. There is to be a pitch inspection within the hour.

Tony O'Donoghue reckons if it's called off they would want it to take place tomorrow instead.

Pitch inspection at 6,15, should give us answers.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

A heavy wet pitch might suit us more than the Serbians

Reporters there saying it's very bad and would expect it will be called off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,640 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Serbian FA think it will go ahead and say the pitch is good, but it's the ref that makes the call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,959 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Rest assured that if there's any possibility of them keeping the game on, they'll be pushing for it to be on. Much more awkward to reschedule these than your typical domestic game.

If it's off I'd say it's because it's really really bad, and that might call into question their ability to have it tomorrow either.

Can we still knock some tasty long balls into Daryl Murphy? Because that's all we need.

If it goes ahead, the conditions could really hamper our one touch triangles and tiki-taka style.

Any word yet? Booked the night off for this. Dunno if I can get tomorrow off too so hopeful...

Serbia v Ireland is ON. The referee was happy with the pitch after an inspection.

    Serbian media describe us as:
the maximum grit, play long balls, shining a head, frenetic fighters

I think you can understand what it means to shine the head with the ball :D

I've criticised him in the past, but to be fair to him he did well at the Euros.

Hoolahan will be used wisely IMO
I expect to see him in the second half

Agreed, Ward deserves his chance this campaign.

Interesting to see how they line up. Walters out wide with Brady behind the striker, or else Brady out right in a 442.

    Serbia team:
Rajkovic, Ivanovic, Nastasic, Vukovic, Rukavina, Mladenovic, Gudelj, Milivojevic, Kostic, Tadic, Mitrovic

Serbia's goalkeeper tonight, Predrag Rajkovic, is making his first competitive start. He's only 20 years old. Big night for a young guy.

Dunphy has called Hendrick by his actual name, Hendrick, twice in a row.

This is not a drill folks, I repeat, this is not a drill!

    Is O'Neill's hair growing back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,345 ✭✭✭buyer95

Dunphy and Brady both very positive on the team selection. Dunphy's not even bashed O'Neil for leaving out his love child Houlahan. Slightly unsettling.

    Delighted Clark isn't playing.

Good to see McClean in from the start too. One of our most important players. Blows my mind that many people on here didn't rate him pre-Euros.

I think it's because he's a bit irratic at times

I'm convinced its because people don't like him as a person.

His final ball can, and was during the summer too, be pretty poor. Plus his almost unique ability to look capable of getting sent off at any given moment was a cause for concern.

He kept his discipline in France though and if he continues he's certainly worth a place in the starting 11. That pace can do damage if he hits his crosses. A proper winger in fairness in terms of power and pace.

I like McClean, but there's plenty of valid reasons to criticise him as a player.

People tend to rate him as he flies into tackles and shows passion. A lot of the stuff he does is braindead though. I certainly wouldn't rate him as one of our more important players.

Could Coleman try and sing a bit of the national anthem ffs captain in all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

Having Walters back will be a great asset tonight. Such a shame about the injury over the summer.
