    Hi Guys

I am thinking about starting to do the lottery and am wondering how to play. I am now 18 and only starting to do it. I looked on the website but I don't understand. I know that you mark off different numbers on a playslip and you get a ticket, but that is all I know. I am thinking of doing Lotto, Euromillions, 54321, Telly Bingo, Daily Million and scratch cards.

Would somebody, in plain easy English, be able to help me out and tell my how each of these games works, what the jackpots are, what I do etc.

    Thanks

Dont. Put that 5/6 Euro in a jar every week. Leave it there a year. Buy something nice for yourself.

It sounds like you are looking at this as some sort of investment plan! To play all those games each week will cost a fortune. Not a wise plan.
Are you sure this isn't a wind up?

    Start Loop
    Pick your numbers.
    Pay shop.
    Watch tv.
    Check numbers.
    Lose.
    Loop.

Ok, I just want to play lotto, euromillions and tellybingo. If they could be explained please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,245 ✭✭✭myshirt

You have more chance of getting killed on your way to the shop to get the ticket, than you do of winning.

So if you've made it back alive, you better manage your expectations.

Quick pick is the way, as each set of numbers has the same chance of coming out. Just don't do 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, because if you do then you'll share the jackpot with at least 500 people who do these same numbers week in week out.

So I do quick pick for all three of the games?

I'd recommend buying the 20 all cash forget about the 1 and 2 ones there is more money to be won on the 20 ones. Also you should always buy 2 of them because the second scratchcard is normally always a winner.

Week 1: Pick 3 numbers, go to paddy power and put €1 on:lose
Week 2: Pick same 3 numbers, go to paddy power and put €2 on: lose
Week 3: pick same 3 numbers, go to paddy power and put €4 on

Keep on repeating doubling the money each time, by the law of averages you will win, the longer it takes, the more you win (I however did not win, I backed out after we started going into the hundreds)

So I do quick pick for all three of the games?

Its up to you whether you do quick pick or select your own numbers .

The object of the exercise is to choose a set of numbers that will match the numbers in our Irish National Lottery Draw .

Sounds difficult but there are many winners each week .

i've just come back from the shop lads, I got a tellybingo for Tuesday for 2.50. I figure you mark the bingo square as your man Declan calls them out. Am I correct or is there more to tellybingo than that?

There is a good bit more to it, unfortunately. That is why I avoid the Bingo myself. Let it to the older ladies (no offence old ladies).

Ok, so tellybingo, I wouldn't be that keen on playing, but I will have a shot on Tuesday. So, I still don't understand the basics or chance of the lotto?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,893 ✭✭✭allthedoyles

Telly bingo is bad value as the most you can win is merely 20k

Also check your docket serial number cos if this matches you can win something too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Jimbob1977

Each game has a distinct playslip..... Lotto, Euromillions etc

For Lotto, you need to select six numbers.

For Euromillions, it is seven numbers (five basic and two stars).

If you walk into a shop, you can use a pen to select whatever numbers you wish.... or tick the 'Quickpick' box for random number generator that will assign the numbers for you.

For Lotto, you must buy two panels minimum. For Euromillions, one panel minimum is required.

You can play the same numbers for multiple draws in advance by ticking the 'Number of Draws' box. So you have one panel every draw for, say, eight draws = €2 *8 =€16.

For Lotto, you are competing against Irish ticket holders. Euromillions is against other European nations.

The Euromillions prizes are much larger because of the magnitude of sales.

If nobody wins the jackpot when the numbers are drawn (Lotto 6 numbers; Euromillions 5 basic plus 2 stars), the jackpot is rolled forward to the next draw. It grows, depending on customer sales.

Of course, smaller prizes are always won for Match 5 plus Bonus, Match 5, etc.

The prize rolls if the jackpot is not scooped.

You should go into a newsagent and get some of the playslips and read the rules on the back. They're free. You can also play online

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Jimbob1977

The playslips also have an optional 'Plus' box.

It costs €0.50 per board and it's optional.

Effectively, if you don't win the Main Draw.... your numbers are also entered into a Minor draw with smaller prizes.

It's like getting thrown out of the Champions League and into the Europa League.

You lay down 50 cent for a shot at a second-chance smaller jackpot

. So, I still don't understand the basics or chance of the lotto?

It's a tax on poor people.

The odds of winning are tiny and the cost to win high. To play the minimum of Lottery and Euromillions your looking at around €20 a week. You get better odds sticking the €20 onto a number in roulette.

I just went to the shop and got Wednesday's lotto. Nothing came up about the bonus number? What is it?

TBH the OP sounds like their perfect mark.

It's part of your selection of six Lotto numbers on the panel. You don't have to do anything.

When the Lotto numbers are drawn by the machine drum, it picks six numbers and then a bonus number afterwards.

    a) If your numbers are: 1 2 3 4 5 6

    And the drawn numbers are 1 2 3 4 5 6... Bonus 7

You have won the jackpot by matching the Main Six outright

    b) If your numbers are 1 2 3 4 5 6

    And the drawn numbers are 1 2 3 4 5 7... Bonus 6

You have won the prize for Match Five + Bonus

The bonus will distinguish a vanilla 'Plain Match Five' from a 'Match Five + Bonus'. The prize is higher.

Ok. I am wondering, in the opinion of people on this thread, which is the best lottery game and which is the worst. You can do them in order if you want.
    Cheers

I only play Euromillions and Lotto.

The Euromillions jackpots can be mega. I'd always favour the Euromillions... but it's very hard to nail seven numbers. The usual..... 'as much chance as being struck by lightning'.

But if I had a set of tickets for Euromillions and Lotto, I'd make more effort to check the Euromillions. The Lotto might sit for a few days.

There's a reason that some people call the lottery "a tax on stupidity".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 User 101

I would like to know what the chances are for winning lotto, euromillions, and daily million, which would be the least likely etc.

1 in 6 people who play the Euromillions win the jackpot.

I've won it loads of times.

i think the daily million is a FIX ITS ABOUT 3 MONTHS FROM ITS BEEN WON
seems its being run like local lotteries you see in pubs only minor prizes being won each week, during that time i think the plus has been won once
seems its just become another rip off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,102 ✭✭✭✭Del2005

It doesn't say on the website.

You can google the odds of winning all the lotteries. If you aren't willing to do some work yourself you'll never find out which one you have the best chance of winning.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 10.7 million to 1 so if you played twice a week with the same numbers you'd be guaranteed a win in a little over 100,000 years.
