Hey guys! You did an amazing job with my first rig, which was 4.5 years ago, I need an upgrade! As I'll be doing video editing for a living. Any help would be majorly appreciated. In general I'm looking for best value, I'm sure there's a point where it gets astronomically priced for a little extra grunt.

1. What is your budget? €2,500

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video editing 95% of the time. Also gaming would be nice.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? I'm happy with Windows 7. Should I upgrade to Win 10? I'm very suspicious that they offered it for free & forced people to upgrade.

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes! I'd like two, that'd be sweet.

5a. If yes, what size do you need? 22'' or higher, depends on value

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? I'd love to see what the fuss over mechanical keyboards are like; mouse, 2.0 or 2.1 speakers. Also is there a way to connect your external hard drives to one 3.0 USB?

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

8. How can you pay? Card

9. When are you purchasing? Next two weeks if poss.

atm it's just 1080 vids; if I could edit quickly with high bitrate 1080p files would be magic.

If you still have the old PC, up the ram from 8GB to 16GB and the i5-2500K to an i7-2600 or 2600K, or i7-3770/3770K, and you'd actually be pretty well set. Wouldn't cost more than about €200 overall.

Graphics card wise, for games, something like an RX480 or GTX970 would be a titanic upgrade form your old card, assuming it's the same as it was back when it was spec'd up.

All in all, €500 would see that rig updated to high-end by 2016 standards for both editing and gaming, it wouldn't be as fast as a new i7-6700 based rig, but it's far more cost effective and performance isn't far off at all.

You'd get around €130-150 of that back for the 2500K and 6870 as well, so the total cost of upgrading would be around €350.

Thanks TF, that's very thorough! I'm looking to buy a new PC entirely so I can have my buddy edit other things on my current machine. Is mindfactory.de the new HWVS? Also does it matter which type of RAM?

I haven't included Windows (do you know how to buy/install it?), mouse/keyboard (Buyer's Guide), or extra storage (IDK how much you need, but Hitachi disks are reliable (going by Backblaze stats).

For monitors, you could go with 1x Ultra-wide instead of 2x.

Thank you KO! I have a few Qs: is 8gb enough ram? Also is there any benefit for a mid size tower rather than full? I ask as I currently have a midsize and it was tricky getting everything in!

ye I would putting in a lot more RAM and only 8GB modules as oppose to 4GB ones, so it is easier to upgrade.

The 1080 is probably massive overkill. A 1060 will probably serve your needs fine.

What ever you do don't skimp on the monitor. A good sized 1440p or even a 4K monitor should help with doing the editing as you can have a full 1080p video open and still have plenty of space for toolbars etc. If you plan to game at those resolutions though a beefier GPU might be needed.

Also if video editing is the main use of the machine a more expensive 6800k build might be advantageous

Could you recommend a super-widescreen/larger monitor? I have a 22" but I would love some extra space as to work with.

Thanks for the link, those Xeons are crazy expensive! They don't look great value-wise for such a jump in price.

It's 3440x1440. Does it matter the Panel type IPS vs AH-IPS? There's another for 200 cheaper but it's the same resolution. (Search http://www.mindfactory.de/search_result.php?search_query=ultrawide+monitor&x=0&y=0)

But Dell monitors are always a good bet.
