At around 2p.m. on Sunday afternoon,a group of people,Celtic Fans, known as the Green Brigade started a wee appeal for the benefit of two charities in Palestine.
They had hoped to raise around £15 thousand and asked a few folk who post on Twitter,Facebook and Reddit if they would help out those in need, help out they did, this morning it stands at £85k and counting,by my reckoning it will reach £100k by midnight, easily.
There have been donations from all over the world, including a good few Rangers fans and folk in general, anyway,I will let you read the story that has captured the minds of decent folk everywhere and I read earlier of some radio station in Donegal who would like to speak to a couple of guys involved in this project.

At the Champions League match with Hapoel Beer Sheva on 17 August 2016, the Green Brigade and fans throughout Celtic Park flew the flag for Palestine. This act of solidarity has earned Celtic respect and acclaim throughout the world. It has also attracted a disciplinary charge from UEFA, which deems the Palestinian flag to be an ‘illicit banner’.

In response to this petty and politically partisan act by European football’s governing body we are determined to make a positive contribution to the game and today launch a campaign to #matchthefineforpalestine. We aim to raise £15,000* which will be split 50/50 between Medical Aid Palestine (MAP) and to the Lajee Centre, a Palestinian creative cultural children's centre in the Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem.

“Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees.
MAP delivers health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement.

Working in partnership with local health providers and hospitals, MAP addresses a wide range of health issues and challenges faced by the Palestinian people.

With offices located in Beirut, Ramallah, Jerusalem and Gaza City, MAP responds rapidly in times of crisis, and works directly with communities on longer term health development.”

Aida is one of 19 refugee camps in the West Bank and has for 66 years played temporary home to Palestinians forcibly expelled from their homes in Hebron and Jerusalem. Its residents live in the shadow of Israel’s apartheid wall, cut off from social and economic opportunities by the wall and neighbouring illegal settlements and military checkpoints.
For the young people of Aida, the Lajee Centre offers hope and an escape from the realities of life under Israeli occupation via its art and culture programmes and sport programmes.

The camp’s only football pitch was built last year by the Lajee Centre, at the heart of Aida. The pitch is now protected by metal netting after it was damaged by tear gas canisters fired by the Israeli Defence Forces. Residents had previously played on recreation ground stolen by the wall.

The money will be a much needed boost to the Lajee Centre who will be able to extend their activities to bring much needed relief via their arts, dance and football programmes. One such programme is that of youth football, with the Lajee Centre looking to organise a youth football team to take part in the Bethlehem Youth League.
There are no organised teams in Aida, with basic equipment like boots in short supply. Funds raised will provide equipment, strips and travel costs to enable the camp to enter a team in the Bethlehem Youth League.

In recognition of the show of support from Celtic fans and all those around the world Salah Ajarma, Coordinator of the Lajee Centre will name the team ‘Aida Celtic’: “it will mean so much to our young people to be part of an official team, to have boots and strips and to represent the camp wearing the colours of our friends. Aida Celtic will be a source of pride for all in Aida”

Let’s #matchthefineforpalestine and show the footballing establishment the true spirit of the game.

Fair play to them. Be prepared for the Internet to implode on you in the next 5 minutes as you are called anti-Semitic and inundated with facts about how great Israel is

I'm actually "amazed" the word was used in the positive sense for a change by an OP.

    Fair play all the same.

Fair play to them for raising that money.

Personally, I hate it when people mix politics with sport, regardless of their political persuasion and the good it can do.

A tad unfair mate, there's many decent Jews out there,as you may well know over 50 thousand Jewish people marched through New York 2 years ago in protest against their country's action towards Palestine,my own cousin in Brooklyn is Jewish,as is my uncle in Orlando.

It's great that they raised this money and hopefully it goes to the people who need it. But lets not pretend they weren't making a political statement by flying a Palestinian flag when playing an Israeli club.

Wouldn't Celtic fans be better concentrating on instilling values of sectarian tolerance into the more Neanderthal members of their own club, rather than making some ham fisted intervention in a socio/political issue in the Middle East that's probably beyond the comprehension of the majority of their fanbase?

The treatment of Palestinians in the Gaza by Israel is absolutely disgusting.

It is utterly shameful that neither the EU or USA have confronted Israel effectively on it.

To be fair, the vast majority of Celtic fans couldn't give two ****s about politics and just enjoy watching their football team. The Green Brigade though have a reputation in Scotland as being some of the more Neanderthal members of the Celtic supporters and adding to the stupid Old Firm bigotry which the majority of people in Scotland and indeed Glasgow couldn't give two ****s about.

I must be missing something here,Ireland was a country full of peaceful people, then a certain King decided to plant a load of savages in the north, the rest is history.

They are neanderthals, they're the ones who still bring along Bobby Sands banners and sing pro-IRA songs at games, they're just as bad as the Loyalist kunckledraggers that the club formely known as Rangers attract. I have no problem with their acoustics etc, they create a good atmosphere at some of the games but for ****s sake stop trying to relieve the Troubles when most people just want to watch football.

When will people learn to stop messing around in the M.East? It's come back to haunt everyone who's done so. fck both palestine and Israel. Better that they had gathered the money to support the homeless, the disabled, or any non-violent group in their own country. And you're terribly naive if you think the money won't in some way be used to kill people.. Israeli, or others. Bloody hell.

I'm a Celtic fan, have been for 30 odd years. The Green Brigade add a fantastic atmosphere to Celtic Park but a lot of their members are brain-dead skangers, no better than the vast majority of Sevco FC supporting bigots. This campaign is misguided lefty **** designed to antagonise to an extent.

If a Club have a minority of extremists then it should ban them for life. The majority should make it clear that they won't accept them. Some might say that the same should apply to religions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 397 ✭✭Wigglepuppy

The video posted was so impartial. :D

I wouldn't bother taking anything seriously that only shows sectarianism by Celtic fans alone or by Rangers fans alone. If really concerned about sectarianism in football, both would be given an airing.

I just hope the money is used correctly. Some of the carry on with aid funds over there is appalling to read about. You've dodgy fcukers living lives of luxury when the common Palestinian on the street sees no benefit.
