    ... why?

    I mean.. how?

    ... what?

I just don't get how it can be funnier than The Office, or the IT Crowd, or tonnes of other far more superior comedy shows.

Mrs Brown's Boys has defied the critics to be named best British sitcom of the 21st century.

Its creator and star Brendan O’Carroll called the result “breathtaking”.

He said: “It vindicates fans’ belief in the show. They kept us on the air. It certainly wasn’t the reviewers.”

“I can die happy now... but I’ll take my time...”

The Office was second in the Radio Times poll and Peter Kay’s Car Share third, followed by Count Arthur Strong and The IT Crowd. Benidorm, in 19th, was the only ITV sitcom.

My question is why is it being called Brittish sitcom when there aint nothing Brittish about it ,:pac::P:P Fair play ta ya brenor :D:D:D

Forget about the British side of it, how the hell is it best sitcom? To be ahead of the office is just ludicrous.

This is what happens with public polls, didn't a Wolfe tones song become best British song of the century before, I think it was some BBC poll.

I know its crazy ok, never thought it was the worse but certainly never thought it was the best.

I can only hope for the sake of humanity that the winner was voted for in an Internet poll.

At least the news channels will be running this shocking story now instead of going on all day about how successful the 'lympx team was and that they made it home.

    winning streak is funnier!

Let the Brits have it. Utter garbage. Someone's Da in a dress bumbling around using coarse language. It's just a sh*t version of Mrs Doubtfire.

    The show isn't funny.
People who like it have no sense of humor, and Brendan O'Carroll is a little bollox.

    That is all.

Finally something that the British have claimed that they're actually welcome to...

I preferred the RTE article about this story.

Title is "Mrs Brown's Boys named Best British sitcom this century". First line is "Mrs Brown's Boys has beaten off stiff competition to be named Best British sitcom of the 21st century."

The author went on to express astonishment that Father Ted (1995 to '98) hadn't made the top twenty.

RTE has since edited the story and deleted most of the comments. :P

I used to absolutely hate this show, my parents watched it and were always telling me to, I refused to even stay in their house if they started watching it I thought it was that bad.

One day a work colleague and friend said to me, "don't tell anyone I said this but I watched some Mrs Brown's Boys last night and it's actually pretty good. If you tell anyone I'll tell everyone what really happened to you in Bangkok when you went missing for a few hours"

So I watched too, and it's actually not that bad if you go in with an open mind. I went from outright hating it, it even made me angry at one stage, to liking it.

Not better than the office or IT crowd though, not even close.

Whatever you're into I suppose. I have seen in total, maybe 1 minute of MBB. Pure and utter rot, I would rather jump into an erupting volcano than watch it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,102 ✭✭✭✭Del2005

Only 16 years in and the best show has already been made, may as well fire all the TV producers and script writers now then. Going to a very unfunny, not that the winner is funny or good, 84 years till we get a decent show again.

They can have this one for sure.

Its crigeworthy and utterly unfunny rubbish.

The only think funny about MBB is that it managed to get this award.

Might just have been a bad minute you watched! Quite the statement after just watching one minute. Or you watched more than you care to admit!

Many that have watched more agree with you though. I'm going to be in the minority here but I like it. My own brother threatened to disown me if I watch it!

    What happened in Bangkok?

Whatever it was can't be as embarrassing as admitting to liking that pile of sh!te.

That's the joke, he was equating liking Mrs Brown's Boys with some of the more embarrassing things that can happen to unsuspecting tourists in Bangkok

Has Misses Brown slipped on a banana skin yet? Surely Brendan is going to add that to a future episode cant wait will be bent over laughing...

I'm baffled by how people keep needing to vent their hatred of this show.
You don't like it. Fair enough. I'm not a fan myself.
    But Jesus wept.
    Let it go.
    It's only telly.

Mrs Browns Boys the comedy of the century - my arse. worst more like:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,231 ✭✭✭Hercule Poirot

Not the biggest fan of the show myself (#ITCrowdRules) but I went to see it live, on stage about two years ago and it was hilarious, although it was more funnier watching them trying to make each other cock up and going off script than the actual content of the show - but I can see why people enjoy it as it's harmless, silly nonsense with a few dirty words thrown in - it may be that because the format is so simple that is what makes it so appealing to the general public

At the other hand..... Since nowadays you cant make a joke without having half of the earth's population getting triggered or offended the best days of comedy and sitcom are long gone.

So that there will not be anything better in the next 84 years.... i can see that happening.

Miranda at no.8 is every bit as bad as Mrs Brown's Boys at no.1!

And Phoenix Nights & Peep Show only 16 & 11, the mind boggles!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Early Doors & Extras not in top 20 either??? And Outnumbered, Miranda, Gavin & Stacey are?

That Poll is all kinds of wrong imo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭bmwguy

I think the hatred stems from its popularity and the amount of money Brendan and family have made and the success around the world. I know I am and I am the only one here so far that actually likes the show!

It's more popular in Britain and Australia in Ireland. It's a stereotype of the inner city working class Dublin family.

Far from the best show since 2000 and I don't agree with it being number 1 in the poll, but we all know these polls are open to hijack.

For what it's worth, best British sitcom in my opinion is the office by Ricky Gervais (Mrs Brown is not even British anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

Can't abide the show myself, or Brendan O'Carroll for that matter, but fair play to him. He's made a killing out of the show.

That said, seeing the likes of The Office and The IT Crowd behind it on the list does make me shake my head a little.

Peope don't have to watch it or like it, or like the people who do watch and get some enjoyment from it.

But in fairness to Brendan O'Carroll, he does give a lot of his income from the show to Irish charity organisations. So maybe some people should lighten up on the personal abuse.

You may not like the show like myself but O'Carroll is one of the most decent people you'd ever meet.

Tell me how much you have helped out in your free time and donated to charitable causes? What has O'Carroll done to receive your disapproval?

The success of this show actually is felt by some of the lesser off in our society.

Actually senior Fred I know that, but I just posted this thread to see the reactions in AH, Some of them are even funnier than the show :pac::pac:

I have seen it a few times, its sometimes funny sometimes not, like most comedy shows I take it or leave it, no big deal.

But imo fair play to BOC for getting the awards and having a successful career, hope he enjoys it ,he comes across as a very nice person outside of his work.

Why not wait until the 21st century is over before deciding which is the best. It's a bit like saying January was the best month of the year in the middle of February.

Before posting on the thread, I thought I'd watch a full episode. Some of it's not actually that bad apart from the canned laughter and goddawful acting. Also those horrible ****ing Dublin accents.. Jesus...

Those popular polls are always the same. It's like that the Lou & Andy swimming pool sketch was voted greatest of all time. Next week it could be a different one altogether again.
