Ian McKinley made his first start for Treviso last weekend, in their 42-10 win over Grenoble. They've also signed Tommy Allan and Marty Banks from the Highlanders so he might find it hard to get regular game time but best of luck to him anyway.

Jordan Coghlan also made his Nottingham debut in a friendly against Newcastle.

Elsewhere, James Hart is in line for his competitive debut for Racing in the first round of the Top 14 this weekend, he's likely to start.

Obviously just an early pre season friendly but that is an impressive looking win for Treviso. They seem to have recruited reasonably well. With decent half backs they could be tough enough in Italy.

Intresting article on Oliver Jager an Irish prop, previously a No 8, playing for Canterbury in the Mitre 10 cup

Very interesting. You can never have too many props.

On a related note, Marty Moore made his Wasps debut last weekend.

Yeah if he,(Jager), goes well I'd assume that one of the provinces, Munster probably most in need, would make him an offer for next season

If they can afford him. I think wasps have deep pockets these days. I hope he has a good spell in England and comes back to one of the provinces (Leinster hopefully) injury free.

Sorry should have made it clear I was talking about Jager in the Mitre 10 cup not Moore in the Premiership

Madigan didn't start for Bordeaux the other night but came on early due to an injury. Missed a tackle leading to a Toulouse try. Bit of sympathy for him as the lad he was about to tackle was knocked out of his tackle line by two other Bordeaux lads tackling him. Also fizzed out a lovely miss pass for a try of their own.

Good on him. Paid his own way, worked hard and is getting the reward. Great place to learn to be a prop. If he goes well the ABs might poach him in a couple of years :D

Brewer is playing for Manawatu and Marmion's brother is with Tasman. Are there any other Irish lads in NZ playing Mitre 10 cup?

JJ didn't make the Saints 23 this weekend. He was in the pre-season squad against Ulster so I assume he was available play. With Holland retired and both Bleyendaal and Keatley being in the last year of their contracts there's a spot for him to return to Munster next season.

Did he sign a 3 year contract?
Would be a very good addition to the squad.

He picked up an ankle injury so is out for a few weeks.

I'm beginning to think he has been vastly overrated in Irish rugby. Injured or not, he has been second best at every level according to his coaches.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,257 ✭✭✭Hagz

    I don't think he's a 10. I think his best position is 12.

Don't know if been mentioned yet but Kelvin Brown, u20 lad who didn't get into any Irish academy, has joined Aurillac in Pro D2.

Didn't realise Sean O'Hagan at Richmond now- he scored try and a conversion on his debut against London Irish

Thanks for that post, just checked that out. Read the match report, I kind of like the fact that the new London Irish under Brendan Venter who held last Doncaster to zero last week had their defence breached for the first time by a former Irish underage player which seemingly sparked a good period of play from Richmond, who were the original tenants of the ground in Reading.
Fair play to him, that's good to see.

There are a good few lads in the English championship now, hope that Gearoid Lyons goes well in Nottingham as well, another good young Irish player.

To me he has never been consistent enough at 10. Even when he was nominated for JWC player of the year it was on the back of moments of brillance, but brillance that was interspersed with basic errors. I'd like to see him move to 12 permanently.

Rave review for Madigan and not just for his 8/8 kick rate. Fair play to him, hope he keeps it up.

I wouldn't expect huge amounts. I can never keep full track of who plays where in Tigers' front row as a fair few play multiple positions but he's got Cole, Mulipola, Balmain and Bateman ahead of him at a minimum. Fairly sure there's some young Italian tighthead there that's well rated too.

Still - its a great place to learn scrummaging in general judging from their production line.

In general, game time for young players seems to be down in England, so maybe we're not the best place for kids to go.

The Premiership could in theory go the way of the EPL where because of the monies involved clubs simply cannot afford to be relegated and therefore they will play it safe and play fewer youngsters.

The A league starts tonight and he should be involved there for now. If he's in the A team he'll be doing well. It's at least as much rugby as he'd be getting as a first year academy player in Ireland

In fairness to the Premiership, it is true...... if your business model included relegation and loss of millions, you would play older, more hardened players to try and ensure safety. The Championship over there is a tough league, it should be used more to develop young players. Most of the clubs in that league do not even want promotion to the premiership because of the financial burden.

Ultimately it boils down to quality of player available. Five years ago, the English league had a poor standard of senior player and weren't particularly ahead of the pack in their ability to recruit from outside England. That meant kids had a great chance of breaking through. Now that those kids have become the senior players and more money is there for keeping experienced journeymen and having top of the range players from outside, there's less opportunity.

Anyway, Betts is on the bench for Tigers A, Mick McGrath starts on the wing.

Harry Mallinder one of Northampton's best players starting at 12 today. Hard to see JJ getting back into the side there, wonder where he'll end up.

Pau with Butler, Coughlan and Dougall have beaten away from home Grenoble with Coulson, Farrell and Muldowney. The latter are on the way toward relegation, we may well see one of those 3 guys (at least) back in Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,876 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Is Muldowney Irish? For some reason I always thought he was a NIQ?

Edit - Just checked Wikipedia and he is indeed IQ...my bad...

The gap between IQ LH available from everywhere and TH is abyssal.
IRFU should have authorized a NIQ project for Munster or Connacht there. Now it's too late for RWC 2019...
