Well, it's just started today and a few discussion points already.

Ayana with another incredible, one might almost say (ahem) unbelievable performance in the 10,000m. Last 5,000m in 14.30 (an Olympic Record for the 5,000m itself) after running the first 5,000m at a pace that would have won 3 out of the last 5 Olympic Finals at 5,000m.

English comfortably through in the 800m, coming third in his heat and Ciara up just after midnight in the heats of the 1500m. Its all coming thick and fast now.

Great jump from KJT and Brit record. Will be a great battle between her and Jess.

That's going to be tough but should be fast so increases chance of a fastest qualifier at least. No prisoners in the 800. Has to be one of the toughest events in the Olympics to make a final. So much opportunity for things to go wrong.

Nice run by Mageean, looked very comfortable, came home 2nd in around 4.11. Diababa won the heat but is definitely not at her best. Generous qualifying, 42 athletes down to 24, first 6 in 3 heats followed by 3 fastest losers.

KJT had a very poor shot put, undid her good work in the High Jump.

    All to play for.

yep, caught up with that this morning. Ennis currently 1st overall, and KJT 4th.

was she taken down in that fall?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

    damn it, yes :(
took her out of the lead group, really hurt her race, that ended her chance of going through

Was always going to be a big ask, but she could've been on for a PB (finished 6 seconds off her PB). Really bad luck. She was still the quickest of the Irish, despite having to pick herself up.

She came down really hard very unlucky she was having a great run.

Am absolutely gutted for her, what a sterling performance she was giving - who knows what might have been, very proud nonetheless :)

BBC have 8 hd channels dedicated to Rio on the freesat, one of them seems to stay on athletics.

but apparently you can use it to fool sites that you are in a different country - eg tell the BBC you are in England

The RTE website has most events live.

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/olympics/live/

All the red boxes are what's currently live.

Sara Treacy through to Steeplechase final on appeal after fall incident in her race. Great news. She has been in such great form and would have been so unfair for an incident like that to define her Olympics.

Thanks Murph. I have the RTE player but am finding it hard to avoid golf coverage. No offence golfers....Is there a specific app for Rio? Saw mention of one a while back but can't find it on the app store...

Russian long jumper Darya Klishina has been "withdrawn" from the Olympic Games by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) based on "new information" they have received, it was revealed today. The IAAF have confirmed that a decision was taken after they received unspecified new evidence in recent days.

It means that, as it stands, no Russian athletics athletes will compete at Rio 2016.The IAAF have claimed they will not release any further details, or make any more public statements, until after a hearing tomorrow with the ad-hoc panel of the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS).

The Russian Olympic Committee and International Olympic Committee (IOC) both claim not to be aware why Klishina has been barred.

    Good to see.

    Her statement:
I am a clean athlete and have proved that already many times and beyond any doubt. Based in the US for three years now, I have been almost exclusively tested outside of the Anti-Doping system in question. I am falling victim to those who created a system of manipulating our beautiful sport and is guilty of using it for political purposes.
I will take every possible effort to protect my clean image as an athlete. At this moment I cannot help but feel betrayed by a system that is not focused on keeping the sport clean and supporting rank-and-file athletes, but rather seeking victories outside sport arenas.

Jesus . What are the commentators looking at. Clearly see on the 2nd replay he drags the sand with his left hand and George crying foul.

Just a couple of days in and looking at where the track medalists come from, countries with zero doping controls and nike oregon, athletics is in a very bad place probably worse than cycling ever was,ll watch the Irish compete but no interest in any of the rest of it now.

Its not just athletics in a very bad place. How about all the other sports that left Russian athletes compete?

Our girls have started nice and conservatively. Here's hoping they can pick off quite a few cos to be honest they have plenty to aim at.

Good work J. Open to correction, however I doubt if too many other Boardsies have been officially credited journos at the Olympics?

Bolt looked good in the semi final.

Don't know if anyone else can trouble him this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

400m WR gone, and from Lane 8!

    Some run from Van Niekerk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

The debate about his potential at the Mile may continue, but Bolt remains quite a handy 100 metres runner!

So impressed with Ciara Mageean's semi final. She demonstrated real racing nous and kept herself in contention until the last 200. She's definitely a force for the future and hopefully she can keep the injuries away.

Still sickens me that Gatlin is allowed to be there and take silver.
