Like climate change, he'll probably blame it on Dog.

Dog owners in rural areas have been asked to keep an eye on their pets after 40 sheep were killed during a dog attack in Co Kerry last Friday.
    Rest is behind paywall

Pulling the wool over your eyes, the devils.

Seriously though, it's a pretty horrible thing for any farmer to have to deal with.

40 sheep  horrific for the farmer, a terrible loss.

I'd say there's more than one dog involved in that

A lot of them were lambs that were killed by the animals crushing together into a small space trying to get away. So may well have only been one.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Nothing natural about stupid bastards owning dogs they can't or won't control.

Sheep do tend to panic and excitement each other. .

As bad as it is....lucky they weren't in lamb...as stress would cause them to lose them :(

Hope this farmer is well insured

Insurance might cover monetary losses but you'd never get over seeing your animals like that.

    :(

It's a tough life for a kerry sheep.
Watching out for dogs, eagles, lonely farmers

I bet it was that bastard Casey.
He's a divil when he gets behind the wheel.
Twas a sad day for the Kerry sheepdogs when his firestones they did feel.

Time to face the firing squad for that little doggie! Fools of owners.

Its unlikely they will catch what dog/s done this, it would be far too costly to get saliva samples or whatever from bite marks and test against local dogs.

A guy up the road from me keeps a donkey in with his sheep, says it protects them from dogs. Does it really work?
I know having a donkey would add on a good...I dunno but at least £600 or so cost a year.

They'll have to be got though. ....what ever it is....if a dog kills/attacks sheep they'll do it again ime

What's the position on shhoting loose dogs on your land? Is it Legal or not?

I'd say they already have a fair idea. And if the owners are semi-decent, they'll tell the farmer and let events take their natural course. Otherwise, this dog would reoffend, as tomwaterford said. Once they get a taste for blood & the chase, there's no going back.

Something similar happened to us in the past, and on the second occasion the owners of the dog were good-natured enough to put a stop to it. This kind of attack represents a massive financial loss, and has to be rooted out.

    Legal if they're worrying sheep.

    Outrageous.

Dogs are now banned outright on the Reeks, and yet I still see people out with their dogs on the Reeks and off the leash around around the National Park, because their dogs are special dogs and their barks make sheep giggle and deer dance.

We had loose dogs a few years ago and the Gardai said we could shot them if the animals were at risk.

Based on my experience this is highly unlikely

Insurance for dog attacks on sheep is prohibitive.Very very few farmers would have it.Priced it here a few times and even suffering a few doggie related incidents it would be very borderline. It also only covers direct losses and not ewes aborting or subsequent ill thrive due to stress etc.
You can claim from the dog owners house policy(assuming you find the culprit and the owners have house insurance)

Very legal despite what some people think.
According to the law you can shoot a dog if you,as the farmer, form the opinion that the dog is worrying,or about to worry the sheep and/or the dogs are out of the owners control.
You don't have to wait until the dog actually takes a bite out of the sheep.
Common sense dictates that you don't plug a dog that is sitting at the gate with an owner in control of it.

For anyone that thinks those photo's are graphic then you should see the aftermath of a dog attack up close .Rather more gruesome than any photo can convey.
Lovely sight to see lambs with legs hanging off, missing ears or maybe their jaw, holes torn in their stomach and all these still alive.

I had sheep attacked by dogs here. ...knew the owners and all.....had some job to get money out of them

Lost about a third of my lambs aborted and had to handle practically all my sheep to lamb them after it....not fun when your having to work aswell

If a farmer sees any dog on their land just shoot it.

Some farmer will use this as an excuse to cull the Eagle population when what we really need are owners who an control their dogs.

Don't prosecute the owner but shoot the dog. Good old Irish logic.

At least the dog gathered up their carcasses after...

Graphic my hole! Might be shocking to those who don't know how our meat is extracted from the animal.

    Dog does what dogs do...shocker.

I hope the dog is not killed, but hope the owner gets the book thrown at him.

    Poor sheep.

I think both are required. The owner most definitely needs to be prosecuted but the dog also needs to be put down or shot as it has a taste for blood now.

Dogs do what their owners let them do. It's why some owners will never have their dogs microchipped or even a name tag on their collar.

Taste for blood - total rubbish.
    An old wives tale.

You'd need a few Kangals or Maremmas - should shred anything that attacks the flock

Since they’ve had the dogs, the number of cougars he’s seen near the goats has gone from six two years ago to one last year to none this year.

On a side note, why does the media always need to round up death tolls in any instance? 36 died according to the article itself, yet headline has 40.

36 killed in the main attack but also:
Three neighbours of the farmer in question also had four sheep killed on the same night.

Nobody said the owner wouldn't be prosecuted as well, the easiest way to stop the dog and ensure you catch him in order to check for a microchip is to shoot them. It's also the fastest way to put an immediate stop to the stress suffered by the sheep.
