We're back with our winter half marathon and 10k events ! Both events will be held on fast, flat courses that are ideal for PB's.
By running in our event you'll be helping to raise funds for Aware & Aiobheann's Pink Tie. All profits will go to our charities.
All runners will get a branded gift on the day.
There is a limit to the number of runners we can have and our event closed two weeks early in in 2014 & 2015 so when we reach capacity we will close entry and there will be NONE on the day.
Both events will start at 12:00 at McCann GAA Centre in Portarlington and Registration will be open from 9:30 AM at the GAA Centre. There will be free parking Portarlington Train Station & there will be refreshments afterwards.
There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd in male/female in both distances.

    Any questions just ask.

    Event details and schedule
Check out www.thegingerbreadrun.com for all info on the event.

Looks interesting. Anyone have feedback/profile on the 10k route? This could be a nice target race for me post DCM.

Last year it was just an out and back for the first 5k of the half marathon

    Hopefully the link works

Love the medal and beanie hat. Will definitely be signing up for the 10km.

Entry is up about 60% on the same time last year. We expect to sell out well in advance and no extra places will be made available as it creates so much extra work for our small team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,272 ✭✭✭donnacha

Myself and Mrs D are in for the 10k. A nice distance to look forward to post DCM.

Numbers are way ahead of last year and we don't think they'll be any places left by the time DCM comes around.

We'll be announcing some more details in the coming weeks !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭Claude Burgundy

Just to let you know we have roughly 150 places left in total. We expect to sell out this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 The Celtic Runner

I'm in! I needed a last challenge after my PB on Berlin marathon. I got a PB on the rock N Roll HM this summer so hopefully I can break it in November!

60 places left in total. Once they sell out we will close !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭Claude Burgundy

Well it sold out on Oct 5th.

I hope to have a race brief together by the weekend and a mock up of the t shirt will be on FB at lunch.

Any question just let me know !

There's a few of us heading up from Limerick for this. Where's the best spot to park? Ease of access out at the finish would be great too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 438 ✭✭Omeceron

There is free parking in the train station, about 5 mins walk from the start/finish line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 438 ✭✭Omeceron

I've seen it mentioned on another thread that there are pacers for the 10 Km.

    What times are they pacing?

Its nice and flat, no major hills at all.

    Just a few reminders

There's no sign up on the morning, please don't ask.

Registration open at 09:30 and will close at 11:15, we'd ask you not to turn up at 11:15 as it will lead to the race being delayed.

If you wish to change distance just make the registration team aware and they will sort it.

If you ordered a t shirt it we be at a table beside registration, just give your name.

There's free parking in Portarlington Train Station ( thanks Irish Rail )

The toilets inside will be closed but we will have 12 portable toilets outside.

There will be water just after 5k on the 10k, we'd ask runners on the 10k to take some on the way back.

There are 4 water stations on the half.

Please run on the side of the road indicated by signs ( its for your safety )

There are pacers in the half and 10k.

Wrap up well, its gonna be cold !

    See you Sunday.

Do we need to bring our confirmation of registration email or anything tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,423 ✭✭✭fletch

Will there be mile markers or kilometre markers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

Great event today again. Bit nippy at the start but grand once we were going. Really is a good course - mainly flat, only a couple of very gradual hills. Was thankful for the cup of tea and biscuits afterwards.

Great event again this year. One of my favourite races of the year. Thanks to the organizers and volunteers on a cold day for hanging around. 2nd year running this race and I ran close to 4 mins and 30 seconds faster than last year. Gingerbread man was devoured. Oh and the bobble hats are top class. Well done to all.

Thanks for the kind words, we are improving and still have some way to go. Overall feedback has been good and we left yesterday feeling happy.

    We'll be back in 2017.

    Hello Claude,

I'm sure you've been asked this a lot. I'm torn between the 1/2 and 10K. Whats the story in relation to swapping if I enter say the 1/2 and want to change to the 10? Or vice versa?

Thanks a lot. I missed this last year but did it the 2 previous years and really enjoyed it.

I did this last year and was kind of sorry I did. I hadn't been feeling well and missed a couple of long runs so dropped back to 10k on the day. I ran a pb for10k and I would have done so for the half too had I stuck with it. Great race.

Registered for the 10k - looking forward to it :)

I'll be doing the 10k myself while the missus attempts her first half marathon. The joy of this one is that now that I'm living in Port, it's on my doorstep. No über early start as it has been to get on the road for the last few races!

Ya you can do that up to a certain date.

I ran it the half last year. Though, reading the comments about the perfect course for a PB I was a bit surprised as it was not as flat as I expected :) But, I was close enough to a PB . I just got one in the Rock N roll last week so I will attempt again in Portarlington, I thought it was a great event last year and I loved the hat! I hope the weather will be the same, it was very cold but dry and no wind, perfect for running. This time I know the course I will be more prepared, it cannot be harder than the rock n roll anyway...I will convince couple of friends as well. Cheers

I ran it last year (albeit paced it, not raced) and my Garmin recorded only 16m of elevation gain over the distance which is nothing. I only recall one significant climb which was after a turn left at 17.7km.

You are right, I was just back from Berlin a month before, that must be why. I just recall myself swearing after 15km as I had nothing left " who said it s a flat one?" and someone passing me saying "there is no flat course in the country side in ireland!" I was under the impression that there are no hills but many false flat up and down. But yes comparing the profiles on Garmin with the Rock n roll in Dublin for instance it looks much much flatter.
Looking forward to running it again

Too much effort compared to the train. Gets in at 12:04 too but doesn't seem to be affecting numbers for the race.

    10k is now sold out.

Crap, was on holiers the last few days so not getting alerts to this thread, my fault I know. No chance of extra places being added? had this down as a target race.

Not at the moment. We need to sell out the half first and then might revisit.
