Kodi 16.1 - can't change contrast/brightness, please help

I got an OTT android (5.1) tv box. When a video/stream is playing (the source makes no difference) the contrast/brightness can't be changed, the slider still goes from 0 - 100, but it does nothing. I got an OTT android (5.1) tv box. When a video/stream is playing (the source makes no difference) the contrast/brightness can't be changed, the slider still goes from 0 - 100, but it does nothing. Google said to disable Mediacodec (surface), but this also does nothing.
It is too dark (tv contrast is already maxed so no help). The satellite decoder in the same hdmi input is fine.
Its basically unusable, any ideas?
