It's worth doing so you get the machine activated with 10. If you dislike it, you can roll back to 7/8 within 30 days.. but at least you'll be ready to go when you do decide to move, otherwise you'll have to buy a license at that point.

I had downloaded long time back but never installed and unplugged months ago. Also away for a few days, will it install? cheers

You would be crazy not too,

windows 10 is much nicer then 8, 8.1

windows 7 is very good but getting old and will expire altogether in 3.5 years

Windows 10 will be around for a long long time, so well worth getting used to working with it

No adds on my start menue, been using 10 for a year now. You can just delete or hide anything you don't want in 10. See something you don't want, right click, hide or remove or un pin.. simple.

Classic Shell is not needed at all.

After a year of using windows 10 I was still having problems with the start button and search not working. I had to kill explorer.exe in task manager and restart it to fix it. After a year.

I tried all the fixes and 3-4 different win10 builds. Still broken. Back on 8.1 now and I'll stay there.

Been on 10 for a year now myself , and while its not perfect its pretty good.
As mentioned earlier your gonna have to move at some point , might as well get it for free

Is there anything I need to do before installing windows 10? Have 8.1 at the moment.

    YES.

Please, please, your friendly neighborhood tech support person is begging you, do not upgrade your work computer until you KNOW it will not adversely affect the other programs you use for work. Rolling it back to 7/8/8.1 DOES NOT ALWAYS FIX THE ISSUE caused by a Win10 upgrade.

I support some CRM and ERP programs for clients who like to take matters into their own hands and who panicked when they realised that the update deadline was coming up. Folks, people on enterprise versions of Windows are on a DIFFERENT scheme. If you are using an enterprise Windows version, PLEASE wait until your IT support people give the go-ahead.

For those wanting to keep their current setup but not miss out on the free upgrade:
    1) Take an image of your current system
    2) Upgrade to windows 10 and make sure it activates
    3) Restore your original image

Now you can upgrade at any time in the future for free as you have activated your windows 10 install.

I have a suspicion the deadline will be extended but grab it on time just in case. The major 'Anniversary Update' is due August 2nd.

A fresh install would be one option. It remains to be seen how MS will offer the upgrade path. One other option is to take an image of your system while on the activated windows 10.

Windows 10 upgrades are problematic, your printer may no longer work, your wireless adaptor may no longer connect to the net, existing programes may not be compatible....it's a minefield the and be careful!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ct5amr2ig1nfhp

Meh, I wouldn't believe that. MS change their mind every second day.
    D0NNELLY wrote: »

I would still recommend to people that they should upgrade. For the majority of windows users, Windows 10 doesn't make a whole lot of difference to them.

Leaving aside the additional privacy concerns and forced updates, the OS is fine is a step up from Windows 7/8.

We've done close to 200 installs now and while we had problems in the beginning, the last 50 or so have gone smoothly.

Take the upgrade while you can I say!

Edit: And install classicshell as recommended by another poster.

I'm not a techie - I've upgraded a surface pro 3, a dell minidesktop, a 5 year old asus netbook, a 7 year old dell laptop and a 10 yr old desktop with no such issues. Upgrade went smoothly on each device and each device worked perfectly from the start. (And a lumia 820 and 1020)

Windows 10 is excellent in my experience, fast, easy to navigate

I'm reluctant to upgrade, even for free. Running Win7 Ultimate 64bit, and has served me very well for the last few years, and never had any problems. Will probably upgrade when MS ceases support for Win7 in 2020.

It's the final look.. so for those who aren't upgrading due to that, there won't be anything coming down the tracks.. ie jumping from 98 to xp to 7 to........

I installed Windows 10 yesterday on HP630 4.5 years old, and can not get the wireless Atheros AR9285 to work, Google and see many issues with this adaptor, anyone here any solution?

I had so many problems with windows 10. If its not working after properly after the upgrade you might have to do a clean install. Just google it, there are plenty of tutorials. That resolved many of the problems for me. Though windows 10 is an improvement over 8 I have to say I didn't like it that much. It doesn't have the same ease for me as say windows 7. But at this point windows 7 is getting a bit out dated.

On a side note, I was getting increasingly frustrated with windows and windows machines in general. When it came time to buy a new laptop. I did something I thought I'd never do.....i bought a Mac :(

The speculation is that it will install and you will get continual notifications to activate. The other possibility is that you may get stuck at the 'windows key' entry screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

I've been running Win10 for a year now and have little trouble with it on my laptop. The look and feel is a lot better than 8.1 (although I did like 8...) and it is quick and functions well.

For anyone with an older machine (4/5 years +) it might be worth googling your make and model to make sure that it works. I updated a Asus tablet which ran 8.1 and had horrendous trouble with it. I had to roll back to 8.1 to get it to work. I had limited success editing some drivers to 10 work, but big updates on Windows 10 reinstall drivers and ruined my handy work.

I upgraded my laptop at home to Windows 10 and the fans seem to be running a hell of a lot more than they use to. Apparently France have warned Microsoft to stop taking so much data from Windows 10 machines

Very true, but people will get panicky and try to do it themselves (engineers are the WORST about this, heh), and the support team for the third-party software (me!) don't deserve the headache, lol.

I tried twice to upgrade but in both cases reverted because the screen resolution was dire(the largest resolution available is 1256 * 1024, however the monitor optimum resolution is 2048 * 1152) and I could find no way of setting it back to the current resolution (2048 * 1152 on Win7). My monitor is a Dell SP2390W monitor and the device manager shows this correctly as the monitor.
I tried to get help via Microsoft Community but no luck so I think I'm going to stick with Win7.

The W10 doesn't like the Nvidia card in my laptop. So it won't upgrade. I'm not that bothered to be honest. Its an old laptop, and I find W8.1 far more stable than W10 on all the machines I have it on.

I upgraded my HTPC to W10 a few months back, no Realtek HD audio drivers so back to 7 I went. No audio drivers for something as popular as Realtek is crazy

Just simply not worth it IMHO. Why would somebody ruin their well working Win7 or 8 for the sake of free 10? Because the 7 is old, it doesn't mean it's useless and the new doesn't mean it's the best ever. I'm not saying 'staying' if you want to go 10, then do it.
(As the saying goes: 10 is an adware with built-in OS.)

The problem is a bit more complicated than that though...

MS are seriously pushing the move to 10 so that they can have a standard platform to support. As they stop selling Win 7/8 (7 is already unavailable AFAIK) you'll only be able to get 10-based hardware which will further increase the numbers

Then you have the likes of Intel who have already said that the next-gen chipsets will be 10 and above only. This means that driver support will be increasingly harder to get for older versions or impossible.

As 3rd party developers move over to 10, expect support for the older OS's to be dropped in newer releases of their products.

The net result is 7/8 will likely become effectively unsupported long before the official end of life date.

Of course there are Realtek HD audio drivers for Windows 10.

I've been running W10 for about 2 years myself now and since then I've done the guts of 100 upgrades to W10. I lost my patience on one installation that reverted back to W7 twice. So I wiped it and successfully upgraded to W10 after a clean install of W7.

If it's not working for you, it's very, very unlikely your PC / laptop hardware is not supported. Problem is not with computer but between ears :p

If your hardware is too old, it will tell you before you install. I've installed W10 successfully on 10 year old PCs and laptops...

Not aimed at you, slave1 and I can understand people's frustration if something went wrong. But trust me, the issue is not with Windows 10.
