Storing Protein Powder

Just wondering has anyone got any tips on storing protein powder? I always assumed they came in those screw top tubs like you'd see in the health food shop, but I ordered 5kg from Bulk Powders and it's come in a bag with a ziploc type top.

My problem is that the top often doesn't seal properly, despite my best efforts, and a few times now, the bag has been open when I go to get a shake. I'm concerned now that if this keeps happening, the powder will go off (can that happen?)

Has anyone else encountered this, and how did ye get around it? TBH, while I do really like the powder, I wouldn't have ordered it had I known it came in the bag.

How do you store anything else? Tupperware.

The powder won't go off unless it's stored in a room with a high humidity.

But you can get a tub on Bulkpowders if you want.

You could also fold over the top and use a couple of clothes pegs - not completely airtight but better than nothing maybe.

I have a storage tub I bought from MyProtein which has a screw on lid and find it very handy. I also have one of the tubs Alf linked above, but prefer the screw on top of the MyProtein tub

I tend to go for 2.5k bags (as I also tend to get a couple of flavours at a time). I store most in the bags - you just have to make sure any powder is out of the sealing bit of the bag. I haven't had any obviously go off - all been powder when I've gone to them, including a few in flavours I don't really like that I keep as a back up!

I do decant it into smaller containers for day to day use, so would only be dealing with the bags once a week or so. I use screw top tubs I got in a euro general or one of them.

I leave it in the ziploc bag and it's completely fine for months.

The ziploc stops working when it gets clogged with powder. Just brush it out and it'll start locking again.

Also make sure to remove air as you are closing it, just press the sides together

Have a bag in my drawer at work. Haven't closed it fully in months...no problems yet.

My trick that seems to work for closing the BulkPowder bags is to almost push the zipper to perpendicular when closing it so it looks like this:

    ====//====

Just grab the zipper and one end of the bag, push it closed away from that hand at an angle so that the bag is bending

Seems to work most of the time when zipping it closed. Besides from that, just keep the powder out of the seal.

    Large one for protein.
    Smaller one for creatine.

Much handier than messing with bags.
