New Sonic game on the horizon for PC, XB1 and PS4.
Ominously no announcement on any Nintendo format :(

And this time they might have got it right.... I know, I know..

But just look at the trailer...

Maybe, just maybe, they got it right.

Let hope live in the hearts of Sonic fans once again.

It looks great. This is what sonic needs, to go back to basics. Unfortunately they also announced another sonic game for the end of next year and that looks like the usual ****e.

They are using the Christian whitehead engine that was used to build his port of sonic CD. This could be excellent since its a rock solid engine and won't have the ****ty physics like the Sonic 4 games.

The game appears to have original levels that have been remixed and rebuilt, not sure to be pleased or expecting disappointment.

I think it's probably the way to give the series a chance to redeem itself. People need to go out and buy the game should it be good.
If it's a success, there'll be a sequel and they'll probably go triple AAA with the series.

I hear it's a CDi exclusive though, with Kiefer Sutherland voicing Sonic

The only thing wrong about this will be the absence of a Megadrive pad to play it with :D Looks really impressive, definitely playing to the strengths of the franchise. The engine & physics certainly look spot on anyway

It's just one of those things you need to play to know if it's right. Looks and sounds the business though, I won't get excited yet

Nail on the head there man, I thought Sonic 4 looked like a fantastic modern 2d sonic game but it played terribly! Don't wanna get my hopes up too much but I'm a little giddy after watching the trailer, it does look really good.

Still that optimism! Given the franchise's long and sordid history, the only way you can fairly and conclusively judge a Sonic game is by waiting for release, playing it and then waiting ten years to revisit it just to make sure you weren't having a temporary manic episode the first time you played it. Then and only then can you judge.

Yup. Been burned by the Sonic cycle way too many times. I will say this though, this is the most optimistic I've been about a Sonic release since the franchise golden days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭eddhorse

I'm not convinced. Its basically the same as the original, a few changes here and there.
I need to see more levels or gameplay.
    Its a rehashed clone.

Haha, yup, happened to me with Sonic Rush. At The time I said it was on par with S3&K which it really, really isn't!

I quite liked the GBA and DS Sonic titles, though they aren't as good as the MD games.
Loved Sonic Jam too, back in the day, on the Saturn.
That Sonic compilation on the DS was gods awful too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 Wazoid

Never owned a Saturn so missed out on Sonic Jam unfortunately but do plan to rectify that in the near future! The Rush titles were certainly better than most post MD Sonic offerings but still felt that they were missing the charm of the originals.

Easily the best 3D Sonic game:

He's still moving too fast and looks uncontrollable.
SEGA should take a look at super mario 3D world for inspiration.
Have the area a little bigger and sonic a little faster than that and you've a winner.
Sonic lost control as soon as they moved to 3D. They need to put focus back on gameplay and stop trying to distract players with 'gotta go fast'. Sonic was never about super speed, except in brief parts of a level or against bosses (like super sonic in sonic 3)

The WiiU title Sonic and The Lost World is probably the closest the 3D titles have gotten recently, but there was that stupid lock on nonsense interrupting the games flow again and again.
And Sonic Boom is utter tripe, not worth mentioning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 Wazoid

Yeah, Lost World is certainly their best attempt at a truly 3d Sonic but I lost hope of them doing a decent 3d sonic game a long time ago and as soon as I saw Knuckles in Sonic Boom I was out!

Stick it on a cart for the real hardware and I'd be all over it.

if you get a Saturn, then Sonic R is an instabuy.

Not sure that's dated well tbh.
I used to rave about it a little too much to impress my PS owning friends, when I was between PS' and had a Saturn, a DC and an N64.
But the controls felt ropey to me and the fade in of the features on screen is a little too close.
    But the music is fantastic!

yeah, a great soundtrack can definitely cloud someone's opinion of a game.

Loved the trailer for this. I saw on facebook that 2 of the guys who were working on Sonic 2 HD are now working on this game so that gives me some hope.

I really really want this to be good though! Please Sega....dont **** us again

That's exactly the game I was thinking I'd when I said it too.

I liked the Advance games but they seem like marmite, people love it or hate it.
Sonic Jam was all I owned as a kid for console (I had a GG), it was perfect, loved looking at the colour manuals and made me so sickened.

The Sonic game on the NeoGeo Pocket Color was pretty good too, predating the GBA versions by a number of years and probably the first decent Sonic game on non Sega hardware.

It was made by the same team as the advance games and going back to it... it's not that great. If you like the sonic Advance games you'd like it but I found the level design makes all the same mistakes as those games and you only get one chance to get a chaos emerald, mess it up and you have to reset the game.

Too right, shouldn't be missing chaos emeralds in the first place :pac:

Well I've played a good few of the sonic mods and stuff super bunnyhop was on about. I think it's alright to have high hopes for it, I do. Think it looks great so far

If it does turn out **** though, I'd say we'll see riots

My guess is this one, above all the others, will be dissected forensically and no quarter given by fans of the originals.
And this would go on to inform the rest of opinion.
I doubt there are many journalists in the games field that have played a Sonic game outside of their smartphone

Isn't that where that Christian Whitehead made his name though, with the Sonic ports on mobile? According to that superbunnyhop chap they're pretty good.

Looking forward to playing this on the PS4, shame it's not out til next year.

    True, true.
I suppose the way to play those is with a bluetooth controller, rather than the hell of touchscreen controls.

Agreed, haven't played them but can't imagine they'd play as good without a proper controller. Fair play to him for writing that engine from the ground up in C++, no easy feat that.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Champion Edition is all I can think :) If it plays as good as it looks, I'm sold...
