BBC Red Button Olympic channels

They are there for months :)

According to Digital Spy, new feeds of the BBC channels that are carried on Sky's Irish epg have been launched. Looks like these feeds will not carry red button prompts for the Olympics.
They can, of course, be tuned in manually on a Sky box.
I hope that this is just a temporary measure as I imagine the green 'remind me' prompt will be affected too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭lertsnim

Why wouldn't they carry red button prompts? As the normal red button channel is available I have no doubt that when the Olympics start you will be able to access them in Ireland.

    red button on fta effected??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭fman

There were issues with the red button during Wimbledon including some info at the time that it wouldn't be available in ROI. It did eventually kick in after a couple of days though. Probably a wait and see (and then maybe complain) for the Olympics.

They have only been reported on Lyngsat, Flysat and Kingofsat in the last week. As encrypted channels. The link I gave above is the first time they were reported as Free to Air.

I don't think you would have seen them months ago.

I have no idea what you mean to say.
Your first post provided a link which showed the channels available for months.
As I write Gregory Porter in concert is on RB1 in the clear. So what is this about encryption?
    I really do not understand.
Oh yes I have had the channels in my menu since 6th May

I use a Humax freesat box, on installation it offered satellite red button or Internet red button. Looks like bbc may be trying to cut costs and going the Internet route. The Internet service is not as accessible, some services look as if they are geoblocked and you need Internet access.

There was 7 red button channels on freesat during Glastonbury amd Wimbledon, 6 regular and 1 HD. All but one disappeared after the Wimnledon final. Still all there on my FTA box.

Which just goes to show the channels are still there and have been for months ..... which is why I just do not understand what the OP is saying .... nor understand what encryption has to do with it. :D

What frequency(ies) are the red button channels on?

I stook up the frequency in April for 12422.. These are the ones that have been FTA for months, just the revolving red screens labelled streams 2-6.

Johnyboy didnt read down to the new frequencies. He is assuming that the previous ones are the one and the same where as these ones are new BBC Sport labelled ones!

    Nice catch.

The title of the thread is "BBC Red Button Olympic channels". The details were on the last post on that link.

They have different names and they are on new frequencies. I thought the information would be useful to anyone with a Free to Air receiver.

What frequency(ies) are the red button channels on?

    All DVB-S2

Generally on my freesat box, the red button would bring me though the satalite route. During Wimbledon it bought me through the internet, as Geo Blocked took another few clicks each time to get back through satalite.

I'm guessing whilst off the freesat EPG untill the Olympics start, they are encrypted on FTA. Did not try and view them on FTA, so not sure if they are or not.

Indeed you are right, I did not scroll waaay down to the bottom of that page to see the new frequencies.
BTW, that page is badly formatted here ..... huge blank space made it appear like one post only until scrolled.

    Thanks for the explanation ;)

No they are free right now. Its just a revolving 30-40 second animation saying Rio is coming on each stream.

Tune them in and add the now, they wont move.

Should automatically reappear on Freesat in next days anyway. Came on automatically justbefore Glastonbury and Wimbledon as well.

15 Red Button Channels appeared on my Freesat EPG, mostly SD, several showing the BBC Olympics Trailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,074 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

I noticed a change last night ....... the channels are now properly named for me as

BBC Olym 1 HD to BBC Olym 8 HD

    and

BBC Olympics 1 to BBC Olympics 8 for the SD channels.

There is one further channel simply named

    BBC Olympics

    on 11,426 H SID 10531

which does not map on my FTA system although not marked as encrypted. Maybe Red Button selection screen related? Anyone know?

They're not an internet feed. The PQ has mostly been excellent for me.

I have noticed the same with some bbc channels - looks like it is being streamed.

I have picked these up on freesat EPG, but I am getting nothing on the channels. Think my dish needs an elevation tweak.

update: tuned in the SD channels today and they're all fine, so i'm content with that

...the HD channels had a constant judder, don't know why

Could very well be something wrong with your setup, or settings therein. Haven't noticed any judder on anything I've watched.

    quick question -

when someone in the UK presses the red button what do they see? is it various thumbnails of the different sports and they choose which one they want to watch?

and does it only work with the Sky remote??

On Freesat, Red Button brings me into the interactive menu, but becuase of my Irish IP address, I cant access many if any of the services.

The Text Button brings me into their text service menu, where I select Rio 2016, amd I can select either RB1-8 and/or BBC1/2/4 coverage all in HD, via the bluebutton.

Or I can go in the the EPG and can view all either in SD or HD.

Can you tune in these channels on a horizon box? And are they just the sports? I'm losing my mind with the amount of rubbish talking going on!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,246 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Do you mean on Virgin Media Horizon? No, Virgin is a closed system, there are no channels that are not on the EPG

Never had any problems with the HD channels since I tuned them in. They make the olympics 100 times more enjoyable, not having to stick through some of the muck RTE shows.

whats this Olympic channel that was mentioned during the closing ceremony??

is it available FTA on sat?

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,371 ✭✭✭mike2084

It's an online/mobile device service to start with, it's a project that is supposed to keep interest in the Olympic sports outside of Games time. They may try to make a linear channel out of it eventually when the new TV deals start next year.
