Yep, RTE just said it on the news. Sky not reporting it yet though. Sky running with it now. Sub-section of the military it appears. Istanbul as well as Ankara now too. Airport in Istanbul blocked by tanks.

    Report from BBC:
Both of the main bridges in the Turkish city of Istanbul have been closed by security forces, reports say.
Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges, but no reasons have been given.
There are also reports of military aircraft flying over the capital Ankara, with gunshots heard.
It is unclear if the events are related and there has been no official information so far on the deployments.

Nice of the Americans to decide we'll have a coup in turkey. Was getting sick of Brexit anyway.

Erdogan is a piece of **** who is turning Turkey into a non-secular Islamic lead, law based state.

The Turkish army has intervened many times to uphold the secular foundations of modern Turkey. Last coup by army was in 1997

It might not be, it might be the Military pushing back against Erdogan and his attempts to Islamify Turkey.

Turkey is secular according to its constitution.

Islamist takeover or army trying to secure the nation from the Islamist President to preserve the secular constitution.

    The latter I'd hope.

This might scupper Angela Merkel's plans of bringing Turkey into the EU

The army have a very long history of coups in Turkey when they perceive the secular legacy of Ataturk being under threat. Erdogan's attempts to dismantle the secular state obviously pushed them to attempt a putsch.

It could be a smoke screen by Erdogan to have some of the military top brass removed.

    Good to hear.

The army is a stronghold of the secularists in Turkey. Definitely not an Islamist move.

Might also scupper the deal they have with asylum seekers......

The military coup in Egypt stopped the country from becoming an Islamic dictatorship with Sharia law. Egypt seems to be back on the road to secularism now again. Hopefully the same will happen in Turkey. Often in these unstable Middle East countries a military dictatorship can be the best option.

I think you're overestimating his reach in the military.

Some people on twitter saying the Military have said it's a coup.

    *edit*

    Confirmed!

    A bad pun I imagine

No big surprise. The army have always protected secularism in Turkey, whether you agree with them or not they were unlikely to let Erdogan turn the country into a theocracy without a fight.

Could be to do with Erdogons support of Isis on there border with Syria.

What does this even mean? And why do it?

What does this even mean? And why do it?

Military leaders/some or all are not happy with the way the government are running the country so want them out. Quickest way to do that is by force.

    Google Military Coupe De Tates,

Erdogan has been taking Turkey in the wrong direction. Hopefully the military will fix things.

It's a bit like winning an election.
    But without having an election.

Presumably so the government can't fly out.

I wonder if they took over the banks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

    Where is Americka ?

They don't care about Turkey, they sell them a crap load of F-16s over the years though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,573 ✭✭✭Infini

Well while coups are bad most of the time if it gets rid of that muppet Erogan I dont think anyone will really miss him. Last thing we need is more Islamacrap from those who want to turn the place back a few hundred years. Sad and Ironic that the military are the LESSER of 2 evils in the middle east... :/

Edit: While thats going on pass the popcorn lads!

But why take airports and stuff? What does this mean for tourists over there? I know some people aver there now.

It's martial law, full military lock down until they have full control and the government are gone. It's to stop people escaping and entering the country.

I have friends over there too. That's the risk you take going to Turkey and why I'd personally never go there from what I know of the place over the years, also why the EU won't let them join the EU.
