It has no significant bearing on me or my family that I can see.

It hasn't affected me at all. I haven't used it yet.

As a taxi Base operator it's very useful, if someone rings with an obscure address, I can just ask for there eircode and work from there.

I've never used it. Think we had 2 pieces of post in the last year that had it on it, one was for the property tax.

Does it work with any sat navs?

It doesn't. The code for our address doesn't return our address on a map, but somewhere different, so we can't use it.

On the up side, nobody seems to be using them anyway and nobody is ever asking for them, so nothing has changed at all really. Well, other than the government pouring money down the drain.

I've used it once on Amazon and er that's it.

Hadn't paid the property tax when the codes were being dished out, and have not gotten an eircode. I'm guessing they're related.

Just looked up our house on the map, and it's there, but there's no eircode attaching to it. Don't care.

Waste of time. Had a delayed delivery (Nightline) a few weeks ago. When it arrived eventually I asked the driver why he didn't use the Eircode provided, he said that they don't use it as it doesn't work with sat nav.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭Yawns

Helped me out with deliveries as sometimes some of my post has gone to another house one street over. Almost identical addresses, just one word different and unfortunately same name for both of us as it's a common name. Postie actually rang the doorbell one day just to check. Since Eircode, I haven't had a problem with it. I just throw it in as default these days.

Unfortunately no, so I just use our maps to pinpoint it and send it on to the driver. But it saves a lot of hassle for driver's, especially with area's of bad phone reception

It's a big load of sh*te. That's what it is.

For me I was looking forward to the sat nav companies taking it up but as yet they haven't.
I have found a round about way to send it to my Tom Tom sat nav by installing an app on my phone.
I have to go to eircode website, find the code or address I need. From there I transfer this to a Tom Tom app on the phone & then again forward it to the car sat nav. It's very long winded & not exactly what I had in mind when I originally heard of eircode but the end result is excellent.

If you are interested you can report this to eircode & they'll update it.

Its cost me as a taxpayer money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 638 ✭✭✭Estrellita

I'm surprised so few people actually use theirs, I use mine. Its sorted out some address confusion, giving directions, post etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,635 ✭✭✭donegal.

i use it almost every day, its amazing ,an absolute godsend.
i use it to make deliveries in a rural area. You'd be amazed how many people cant give directions to there own houses.

The only problem with it is that when it came out people were told it was useless and promptly forgot/lost their eircode.

Used it once for a delivery from Cork. It was an urgent delivery so used it thinking that it would speed up delivery.

The package went missing for a week and ended up in the UK.

    I haven't used it since.

I've reported it 3 times since they launched it. No update yet - on the last email I received back they asked if we couldn't just trade house numbers with the other property...

    It's costing you approximately €8.08

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭pawrick

I order a fair bit of stuff online and live a little off the beaten track so it's been handy for couriers who aren't familiar with the location and saves the hassle of trying to give directions by describing the funny looking neighbour wearing the I shot JR shirt etc. I just wish it was more accessible and available on sat navs etc.

That's €8.08 he could have spent on the flash of a brazzer's nipple.

i dont get why people dont like it

If you don't need to get to hard to find houses then don't use it.

and if you don't need to use it why do you think its ****e?

An post doesn't use it and neither do any courier companies dont, the only benefit I find it that I finally have a relevant code to enter when ordering from the UK or USA

    :confused::confused::confused:

but those two don't work and cost a fortune , right?

but eircode works like a dream (and will presumingly pay for itself ?)

Our house is kind of hard to find - using Eircode, it's impossible to find.

That's my own personal reason for not liking it.

The only time I've ever seen it was when it was pre-populated for me on something I was ordering.

Going on the first anniversary of my first time using it to send my daughter a card for passing her driving test and she still hasn't got it. Custom made with her photo too. So Happy Thanksforlosingmyfookingcard Day to you Eircode.

Used it a few times for parcel deliveries and i think they arrived faster than normal.

to be fair thats not eircodes fault.

you can't blame eircode if the courier decided not to use it.

Don't know what my number is.
Got the letter, threw it somewhere "safe" and can't find it now.

    Courier? An Post.

I don't know what approach An Post is taking overall, but our local post lady says they're ignoring Eircodes completely in the local sorting office and when delivering mail.
    "Pointless" where her words ;)

Who knows? They might have delivered it to the correct location shown on the map as having that Eircode. But who knows if that was the correct address?

I'm still using 00000 if I have to fill post code. Some day we'll get nice, easy to use, free, open, easy to control and working geocoding. Like this one: http://www.openpostcode.org/

P.S. I just generated post code for my garden shed, for free :-)

What I'm finding interesting is that they were saying on the news earlier that the ambulance services are using Eircode. I had to call an ambulance to our house last year, they never asked for our Eircode. Just wanted directions on how to get there.

You asked, "if you don't need to use it why do you think its ****e?"

My reply was intended to point out that we don't have to use something to care if it's "shite". We don't use evoting machines either. But they're shite. Most of us don't use PPARS, or our water meters. They're shite.

They're shite because their expense doesn't seem to be justified.

Post/location codes are great in that delivery companies can easily load by post code, our non sequential system doesn't allow this. You'd think that it was purposely hobbled by an incumbent who doesn't use it.

The easiest way to to know it's sh**e is that insurance companies aren't using it, in the UK and US the first thing that insurance look for is post code. Then there's the fact that it cannot be used anonymously, it's either all or nothing.

The fact that a free location based system, which is useful for emergency services as for some silly reason people don't always need them to a house, was offered and rejected also annoys.

You can search for your eircode on the eircode website either by entering your address or using a map with a crosshair lttle tool to find it. I don't really understand why people are upset that the satnav companies are not using it yet. SatNavs are a dying technology they have been replaced with Navigation Apps on smartphones. If you search for an address using the Eircode Website on a smart phone it had a direstions button underneath the result that will then open it for you in google maps and you can navigate that way.

Had a repair man get my eircode from me the other week... he had a freebe app on his phone which pinpointed the house on the map... he thought it was the best thing since sliced bread... first person I ever came across to either use it ,or say something positive about it..

I disagree. I need sat nav 5 to 10 times per day. Sat nav always has a signal but sometimes I have no internet coverage to set up the guidance on Google maps.
Nothing against guidance on phones & I use them sometimes but when you rely on it for a living you need a sat nav too

Doesn't affect me at all.. never used it, never been asked for it, and nothing has ever arrived in the post that had it on it.

Complete waste of money as expected.

I'm a repair man too. Regular address is fine if you have a house number. No house number then I demand eircode. I'm not for doing the first right after the fourth tree & I'll leave the pourch light on. Life is too short for that

for me the fire brigade is a complete waste of money as expected.
