Matt Nix is on board to write the pilot.

Fox and Marvel Television are teaming up for a new untitled X-Men TV project, and Burn Notice creator Matt Nix is on board to write the script.
The network has made a put pilot commitment for the new Marvel series, which indicates Fox is heavily invested in the project and means the show has a high chance of at least airing as a special if it does not go to series.

For the millionth time, I'll say it: if they don't do an X-Factor series, they're leaving money on the table!

FOX's X-Men TV Series Confirmed To Connect To X-Men Movies

    http://comicbook.com/2017/01/12/foxs-x-men-tv-series-confirmed-to-connect-to-x-men-movies/

On top of the astonishing news that FOX's X-Men TV show is very close to happening, the show's producer Matt Nix also revealed an all-new bit of news.

His new X-Men series will, in fact, take place within the X-Men cinematic universe from 20th Century Fox.

When speaking about the new show at TCA, Nix opened up about the relationship between the new show and the series. While Legion - set to air on FX - won't have anything to do with the movies, this new series will.

“Without getting into specifics that I’ll get murdered for, I would say that a fan of the movies — particularly the movies but also the comic books — would not be disoriented as to where this fits in the mythology. If you look at the movies that take place, they don’t all line up perfectly. So it’s not like I’m slavishly fitting myself into a particular slot [but] if you like that world and the world of the movies, there are definite nods to it, it definitely exists in the same general universe.”

Nix said it would be similar to the way Agents Of SHIELD fits in to the MCU, but not exactly the same. He went on to explain how they will address the current characters that exist within the movies.

“Without getting into specifics, it’s sort of designed to side-step questions like ‘Where is Wolverine?’ So you sort of have to answer those questions, and I didn’t want to do anything like ‘Wolverine is just offscreen!’ You know what I mean. So it exists in a world where those questions are answered without needing to name a lot of names or spend time dwelling on that issue. So within that, there are a certain amount of those characters I can use, and I’m using some of those, but others I’m inventing. But everything is invented with a nod towards the existing mythology. When I was pitching the show, I pitched some characters that appear nowhere in the mythology, but the guys from Marvel, when I started describing them, all gave each other knowing nods. It was like ‘Oh I see what he’s doing, yes.’ So I tried to do a lot of that. I didn’t want to get into the realm of too much ‘Yep! New X-Men here we go!’ because with this there’s a little bit of fan service.”

Fox has not announced any specific mutants appearing in the new X-Men series, but it is said to focus on a mutant family that joins an underground mutant resistance when anti-mutant legislation is passed into law.

Nix's X-Men drama replaced Hellfire, the proposed series following the Hellfire Club when Fox decided the idea would not work for a television series.

So, for the most part, it won't actually be about the X-Men....

Hm, wonder if he's doing exiles. That'd work give what's said there. Time hopping, alternate realities, the same "general universe".

    Fox ordered the pilot
The Untitled Marvel Action-Adventure Series focuses on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

“Matt [Nix] is a huge fan of X-Men and his take on X-Men, with its rich characters and high-stakes adventure, is exactly the show we want on Fox,” Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb said last summer, when the first Marvel/20th Century Fox Television co-production received a put pilot commitment.
Nix, who will executive-produce the project alongside Loeb, Bryan Singer and others, just recently confirmed for IGN.com that to some unspecified degree, this TV series will share DNA with Marvel’s X-Men films, saying, “If you like that world, if you like the world of the movies, there are definite nods to it. It definitely exists in the same general kind of universe.”

After all, as Fox co-chairman Dana Walden previously noted, “The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature [films] side.”

Stephen Moyer To Topline Fox Marvel Pilot
Stephen Moyer, star of one of the top genre drama series of the past decade, HBO’s True Blood, has been tapped to play the lead in Fox’s Marvel action-adventure pilot.

Written by Matt Nix and directed by Bryan Singer, the pilot focuses on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. Moyer will play the dad, Reed, an ambitious attorney trying to balance the demands of his job at the DA’s office with his responsibilities to his family. He joins previously cast Blair Redford and Jamie Chung.

Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory executive produce the project, which features characters from the X-Men comic book franchise, for 20th TV and Marvel Television.

The Marvel pilot extends Moyer’s relationship with Fox and 20th TV after co-starring in their upcoming limited series Shots Fired. Following his seven-year run on HBO’s vampire drama True Blood, Moyer co-starred on the Kurt Sutter FX period drama series The Bastard Executioner.

Hrmmm.. looks like it's reaching for special effects it can't afford or hasn't got finished from processing yet.

Story seems weakish but maybe they're just not giving it away.

I think the effects aren't bad. Blinks portals were always likely to be a downgrade from her DoFP portals and probabpy used far more. Sunspot will surely cut loose at least once and it will be extremely expensive when he does. TV Show budget not movie budget so I can live with it. Thunderbird/Polaris/Telekinetics are fairly cheap. If it finds a niche and second season budget will increase and effects tightened up.

Looks like it could be alright. Decent director, decent cast, and the trailer hints at just enough to pique interest without giving too much away. Could be worth the watch. I'd be interested to see exactly how it fits in with the MCU at least.

Has there been confirmation anywhere as to whether or not this is linked to the X-Men movie universe? I really hope not... hopefully the recasting of Blink is indicative of a disconnect.

Anyway, to paraphrase, you had me at Amy Acker.

They make sure to mention the X-Men in it.

I wasn't really that bothered about it (still haven't watched Legion yet either). But then I saw Amy Acker in the trailer.

Now I'm bothered about it and will give it a go, because Amy Acker is incredible in everything.

Yeah but that doesn't mean it's tied to the X-Men movies, surely? *remains hopeful*

Agreed, she elevates everything she's in. I still can't picture her with any man that isn't portrayed by Alexis Denisof though :pac:

Honestly I sorely doubt, even as messed up and weird as some of the choices Fox can make are (remember that they were the company that thought a Deadpool film was a bad idea and spent years fighting it),
making a direct reference to the X-Men in the trailer
is not something you do other than to tie something in.

I mean, DC/ Warner are happy to do it, but on the weird choice scale they're off the charts.

Ugh, I know you're right. I mean, they've got Bryan Singer on this so it's inevitable... ugh...

They'll likely reference the X-Men, and then just start abandoning all continuity whenever the feel like it. The continuity of the movies themselves is gone to sh*te, no reason to expect the TV show will be any different if trying to tie-in to the existing movies.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

With the X-Men, I think I've just given up trying to figure out the continuity, feels like an exercise in futility; I mean given past behaviour at Fox, why should I expend mental energy trying to make the continuity fit if the producers clearly don't care?

The blatant disregard is almost admirable at this stage, in a warped kinda way. Even when they tried to reset the timeline they managed to make a balls of it. And as for 'Legion', muahaha; I think Fox are just trolling at this stage :)

As to the actual trailer, I dunno. I have a very, very thin measure of patience with teenage characters so it totally depends on how irritating & "screen teen" they are. Plus I hope it doesn't descend into episodes' worth of clunky 'family' metaphors...

To me, Legion seemed completely independent of the movies, thankfully.

Well there was the very obvious nod to Davids dad being a bald, British man.

Overall I imagine it will be quite loose in terms of the connection. I only cited DoFP since this reunites Blink/Sunspot (renamed Eclipse)/a Proudstar (Thunderbird over Warpath). I assume we will get a similar wink towards Polaris father at some point. Its not going to be an AOS level tie in to any timeline but there'll be an acknowledgement all the same. Legion never nailed itself to a timeline either.

Yeah, agreed; that's a much better trailer & seems the makings of a much better show. I think what Gifted has in its favour is that the root of the drama is more solid and immediate: it's a family on the run from the FBI (with the added bonus of not immediately annoying teenage children), whereas Inhumans is coming across like a lukewarm Game of Thrones knock-off, without the budget or swagger to properly pull it off.

Which it won't be because of Amy Acker.

Amy Acker as Medusa and Alexis Denisof as Black Bolt, and Inhumans would have been already renewed for Season 2.

From what I have gathered it's set in the X-men universe before Logan. I really enjoyed Legion so was really looking forward to this. I loved the first episode. Was pretty sweet when I heard Eclipse has the same ringtone as me
