Is to too early to have a thread on the new/next Note which seems will be called the Note7 and rumoured to be unveiled this August?
Ive been due an upgrade months ago but held off going for the current crop of handsets as I think this is the phone I want!

I've been reading up on it today myself and it has me pretty interested. I currently have an S6 Edge+ and an S7 Edge but I've previously had every Note and missed not getting the 5.

The Note7 though sounds like a big step up (unlike the S6 Edge+ to S7 Edge - which, despite the media hype, is fairly minor in reality to where I actually prefer the "older" one - so may be worth getting once the initial rush dies down, prices stabilize, and a few firmware updates are out.

It's become apparent that the Ram and processor in the N7 will be of a lower spec than people anticipated.

Might hang on the N5 for a while yet.

Any suggestions on where the best place to pre-order will be?

Samsung don't seem to have a shop on their website. I'm guessing Amazon will have it, but are there other places people use?

I've no interest in a gimmicky curved screen. It ups the price, reduces the usable screen space and makes it virtually impossible to properly protect with a case. I've been waiting for this phone, but I'll be leaving it behind. What were they thinking? A triumph of the marketing department over the engineering department, no doubt.

Well that's disappointing... so it's basically what the S7 Edge should have been with a pen. I stuck with my S6 Edge+ as my primary phone as there was no reason to upgrade (and the smaller screen was a big negative), but it looks like I'll be staying put for another while yet.

A bit dissapointing allright but I didn't know about the gorilla glass 5 front and back, and the front being slightly more flat than the s7 edge.
    http://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2016/8/2/12344688/samsung-galaxy-note-7-announced-price-release-date-specs

"The curvature of the screen is different from the S7 Edge in that it allows for more flat surface area. The rear glass panel has an identical curve to the front, making the whole phone more symmetrical than the S7 Edge (both pieces of glass are now Gorilla Glass 5). The Note 7 also moves to USB Type-C charging, a first for Samsung devices."

Mind me asking why ye don't like the edge screen? And why not USB-C?

Have the edge myself and love it. Screen looks more full and vibrant. Easily the best screen on any phone, and looks better than the normal S7, which iirc has higher PPI than the edge.
Only negative I can see is it being harder to protect, but I've dropped my phone now many a time in an otterbox (including face down) and not even a scratch.

Don't see any negative with USB-C, unless you don't like the idea of throwing out all your old cables

Disappointing specs. Would have jumped at a flat screen version. Such a pity.

Feels like Samsung have become a 'We did just enough' company with this one.

And i'm probably gonna cave. Zero interest in owning anything other than a Note, although i do have some reservations about what is on offer.

Note 4 is still available with Three.ie. I'll probably go for that. Either that, or have a look at some of the Huawei phones, though I'm a bit afraid the compromises that must have been made to be able to sell them so cheaply.

I've been doing some reading tonight and I'm thinking if anything I might just get a dual SIM Note 5 if the urge to change hits.

I think that the last 2 generations of phhones have shown we've hit a plateu where novelty gimmicks are being relied on too much to shift units. Add in the increasingly solid competition from cheaper Chinese manufacturers and even within their own product line and Samsung are going to find it tough to sell this one I think.

Interesting, didn't know that about USB-C.

As for the Edge screen, that's entirely a matter of opinion. Personally, I wouldn't go back to a flat screen, the edge just looks so much better. Missus has an iPhone 6s and work colleague has a regular S7, edge trumps them both, easily. Obviously, in my opinion. Can see why people dislike them though with the risk factor.

I was going to do very same until I saw the Note 5 has no expandable memory and no battery changeability

Not necessarily a dealbreaker for me coming from an S6 Edge+

Non-removable batteries seem to be the norm for a lot of the higher end stuff anyway and 32/64GB would do me fine as I don't store that much locally.

But the bigger screen is a must for me (have an S7 edge too as my work phone and I really do notice the difference) and the dual SIM option would be a nice additon I think.

Just watched the presentation. I like the new Note 7 and probably will get one as soon as price gets a more realistic (probably withing 9-10 months). I have been using my Note 2 for three and half years now and very satisfied with overall quality. Hopefully battery life will be good as it's crucial for me.

I'm the same re the edge screen. I hate it. Just waiting on the opportunity to change. I had a look at the P9 yesterday and it's a lovely phone.

I read an article online that says anyone that pre-orders from the Irish operators (or most of) will get a free updated Gear VR headset. Anyone any ideas how this pre-order process works? I'm guessing I can call up VF and sort it out.. Just worried that as a business customer they won't do it for me!

Overall I'm happy why the Note 7 spec. No real surprises but will get one, if price is right. I've been on the 6 Edge+ for last 10 months and whilst I like it, I do miss the Note. I really like that you can pop out S Pen and scribble on the screen straight off, and these notes can be pinned to the lock screen using the always on feature - this is a very handy feature for reminders and quick notes that are saved to Evernote.

I tried the OP3 but actually returned it as I just didn't like it and couldn't get back to Touch Wiz quick enough!

Edge screen puts me off too. Would've pre-ordered for definite if it was a flat version. I'll try it in store in case it's not too bad but it probably will be.

Not sure what phone could be next for me. S6 is still going ok so I'm not in a mad rush just yet.

I like the look of it so far. Only thing stopping me getting one now is whether Google will bring out a similar size Nexus phone this year?!

I've an S6 myself but getting the itch to change now. Am going to wait and see what Apple bring out but if its as underwhelming as rumors suggest I might go for one of these, looks great.

I may end up getting it anyway. Gonna see if they have one on display in the Samsung shop.

It was released in some regions already so hopefully they'll have it in store.

Samsung shop won't have then in store until about a week before launch date which is 2nd September in Europe.

it was a Samsung only store. They had two S2's on display. One is a case and one beside it not in a case. It was a that large shopping center in Swords.

Edit: Just googled the name. The Pavilions Shopping Centre.

There's a Samsung store in the Dundrum Town Centre. Top floor.

It's just a rebranded Carphone Warehouse shop selling only Samsung devices and accessories.

According to Internet, Note 7 with 6Gb RAM version will be an exclusive model only for Chinese market. At the same time, I don't see a need for such a huge amount of RAM and 4Gb is more than enough for everything including heavy games. What I find interesting is a new energy saving mode with switching screen resolution from Quad HD down to Full HD or even HD in order to reduce energy consumption. I think it's a very good idea.

Will the Samsung store in Dundrum be selling Unlocked versions of the Note 7 from the release date in September?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Pre-ordered through the Samsung UK website. It's £729, so pretty steep, but comes with free Gear VR and a case.
