Handy trick for getting Sterling commission free

Sterling is currently €1.16 to the £ making it good value for us to travel over there or buy from UK websites online. If you are looking to buy some sterling commission free there is one handy trick in how to do so. Even if you put your bigger spending items on a credit card your still are going to need some 'walking around money'. And one means of doing so without having to pay the rip-off charges from ATM's and commissions etc is to go into your local Ladbrokes betting office and back a non-runner. You can then cash in the docket over the water at any Ladbrokes at the precise exchange rate on the day - no commission or charges. Just google for the nearest shop where you going to be.

You can just use the revolut app.

As someone who doesn't back horses that idea scares the sh*t out of me lol

But I'm sure to those in the know it makes perfect sense..

They don't. They just build the commission into the rate.
You often actually end up getting a worse exchange.

    Or go to An Post.........

They give a poor exchange rate

100 euro gives you 85.09 with revolut or 82.77 with an post

And you have to go to the post office

As someone who has never backed a horse may I ask how you would know if the horae was a non-runner. Surely by the time the punter would know then surely the bookies would as well and stip taking in bets on that horse? Just curious.

It's remarkable how successful An Post's "commission-free" advertising has been. They offer one of the worst rates in the market and I generally find it works out more expensive to do FX with them than banks and speciality FX dealers.

A lot of people just don't do the maths I guess.

Learn something new everyday! I work beside a post office so I use it for handiness sake and like OP it's just for walking around cash.

Fair enough - I only have ever used it for a small amount of exchange coz there's a post office handy to me. Use the revolut card as well.

Still easier than placing a bet on a non-runner in one bookies & having to cash out at a different one in another country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭GBX

Not all bookies would take a bet on a non runner in the first place. The staff could already know that the horse is a non runner. Revolut is the better option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

Hmm drive 90 minutes to the nearest over the border ladbrokes or just use revolut? Bargain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭kevincaomhin

I would imagine that there is a charge on this. I know if I load money onto Paddy Power they charge me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭theteal

Or just use the Revolut card/app as mentioned several times and you don't have to set foot into the depression/desperation of a bookies. . .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,101 ✭✭✭tuisginideach

I'd prefer to buy from An Post at a crap rate than to support a bank!!!

Could you not just back a dead cert in the bookies here and then take your winnings in the uk? None of this backing a non runner rubbish!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 onetwofourthree

Thanks for the tip on Revolut. Had never heard of it. Off topic, so sorry if so, but better/worse than, say, Transferwise?

Whatever method I use, I always get the feeling I'm being ripped off!

It's the same as banks offering cashback on mortgages. The banks with the highest interest rates offer cashback and people are blinded by it. They end up paying way over the cashback amount on interest

Like the petrol stations charging 118.9c, they wouldn't go to a station that charges 119c, it's a rip off..

You can spend it here, it works in ATMs, online and in shops. You can top it up with your Credit/debit card instantly so you don't actually need to let them keep your money.

Perhaps before you knock an idea you should look up how it works.

Also by topping it up with your credit card you can do a charge back if something happens

But with PayPal you don't get the exchange rates that revolut offer.
I travel with work a bit and it's handy getting good rates and no charges

With revolut can you return the item within 180 days and get a full refund ?
I'm buying items of high value so I prefer the extra insurance of PayPal

PayPal can be sh*t too. I once got stung for 300 quid from them. Said the buyer paid using fraudulent funds and withheld my money. Emailed and called for weeks and got nowhere. Useless shower...

You can't do that with PayPal. Can you use PayPal in Asda or in at a till in Manhatten?

I've sold 20k of items using PayPal and bought more and never had a problem
If anything they have helped me from dodgy buyers to my advantage

Check it out online in the morning. There are always a few non-runners. All you do is stick on the docket the name of the geegee and the time of the race and meeting. The vast majority of staff these days in betting offices haven't a bog notion and its the computers that do the settling.

Well you clearly don't like bargains because PayPal have some of the highest charges around. You need to look at alternatives

This threads is for getting cheap sterling using a back that involves a con with a bookmaker backing a non runner that won't even work anyway, as soon as a horse or dog is declared as a non runner you can't back them

Pipe down you muppet (people who travel lol)

I got the revoult app and got a physical card too and have never used it. Im heading to Belfast for 4 days soon.

So best thing to do is top it up before traveling to get the best rates? I can use the card to pay or withdraw from ATM's for purchases? The app/card will automatically pay for items in sterling while I'm there..is that correct?

Of course you can back a non runner - staff rarely even look to see what's on the slip these days, and if they do reject it just try again later with another cashier.

Your argument is dead in the water
This entire thread is about deceiving a bookmaker
    Fraud in actual far
This revolting card keeps getting based about
If you like it use it
I like PayPal and will stick with them
    Sell things - make money
    Buy things - happy days

Okay explain where the bargain is
You back a non runner and deceive a bookmaker and make profit/gains

I'm all for a bargain but this isn't one

Pretty sure firestarter is either A) a bookmaker himself or B) a troll.

And yes this thrteady is about traveling, read the first post carefully its for people that need "walking around cash" therefore the revolt card/app is appropriate. I dont care how much money you've made/spent on paypal, I use paypal too but I can't walk up to an ATM in London and take out cash with it where as I can with a revolt which is essentially what this thread was started about.

Now go back to your hole your too scared to come out of.
