Metropolis Festival 2016

No official announcement yet. Crystal Castles have self confirmed for November 5th so looks like it is definitely happening.

Any rumours or guesses on who will be on the line-up?

My guess is M83 could be on one of the sub/headliners as they've been surprisingly missing from all the summer festivals here. Moderat are playing Pitchfork festival in Paris the weekend before so could possible see them pay Metropolis.

They updated their Facebook page with a status a couple of weeks ago which simply read:
    "Metropolis Festival 2016...."
So yeah, gladly seems to be going ahead again.

Would expect the first announcement to be sometime around the end of July similar to last year.

I'll definitely go again. Lineup last year was excellent.

I really enjoyed it last year, there's a couple things that need to be improved but over all it was a nice setup.
Line-up was impressive last year, it'll be interesting to see who they get this time around

Great shout with M83 and Moderat, they would both be strong contenders. Would love to see M83 announced for it, thought we would see them at EP or Longitude. Hard to know who else to expect, I remember thinking after last year it would be very hard for them to top this line up going forward so it will be interesting to see what they have up their sleeve, they set the bar high with their first edition. Hard to even think what acts will be touring come November, obviously there is a big focus on electronic music and DJing, I can see the likes of Bicep and Jackmaster being added, would love to see Fort Romeau who hasn't had any Irish festival dates so far this year either.

    What date is this on?

It was a Saturday and Sunday event last year, so if it is a 2-day event again this year it most likely will be on November 5th & 6th (going by the self-announcement from Crystal Castles for Nov 5th).

No official announcement regarding dates yet though.

Another guess from me - Christine And The Queens.

They put on a great show at Longitude yesterday. I looked up their tour and they play Manchester on the Friday and Glasgow on the Monday. Leaving 2 days free for a possible Metropolis appearance.

Really hope Chance the Rapper and Christine and the Queens are announced. Christine being the absolute perfect act for this festival

If Crystal Castles are playing that pretty much means I'm definitely going to this.

Looks like Fatima Yamaha will also be playing Metropolis

OK my Chance prediction may be wrong. He's just announced a show at the Olympia for Nov 11th. Ah well

Metropolis have just created the event page on facebook. They say it is on the Friday and Saturday this year (4th & 5th), line up and details to be announced soon.

So it's on a Friday/Saturday this year. I prefered Saturday/Sunday but at least there will be a day for recovery before work I suppose.

horrendous. will need a 180 to bring me back this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

Said it was a two day festival earlier in the year and now it said it's a three day. Not sure if there was a change of mind or a mistake or what.

EDIT: Post was way too negative haha. Very good first announcement. A few acts I wanted to see for a while, a few I missed at previous festivals and a few I haven't heard of and can't wait to listen to. Hoping it's a two fay festival though because I had booked the friday and saturday and sunday off work and there's no way I can book the thursday:o

So who do you think is going to be in the next EP announcement?

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Day tickets to come in at about €79.50 I'd imagine.

Jaysus, very disappointing line up announcement from them. It's almost embarrassing compared to last years, not to mention that tickets have gone up by at least €30. Very underwhelmed but I'm sure they have lots more to come, they won't be seeing me come back unless they have something considerably better to announce.

So is DJ Shadow only on Thursday night as opening night special or will he play the main gig days too.
Bit of a bummer if you need to buy the whole 3 day ticket if you want to see him.

Dammit. Dj shadow would have been amazing but on holiday that weekend. Oh well.

just doing the Thursday. it's basically just a separate gig that POD/Hidden Agenda have timed so they can use it in the marketing for the festival.

can buy a Thursday only ticket for €40 to see him specifically.
it's only a DJ set from him according to the Metropolis website, so certainly not worth it IMO.

Anyone know where early birds can be got? TM site only seems to have full price (€145 +booking)

Why oh why oh why the Irish promoters jack up the price so much year on year for every event here, it kills me.

99 euro for a great line up was excellent, 140 for a first round line up like this is poor.

Last year wasn't even a complete sell out was it? Crazy price for a 2 day mid sized festival. They'd need to add another headliner with big appeal or I can see this being half empty.

not sure why you're singling out Irish promoters, it happens right across the world.

Primavera Barcelona upped their 2017 prices by 20%

I agree though that the Metropolis price jump is huge and just greedy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,005 ✭✭✭byrneg28

Primavera a 5 day festival with top top top quality acts
180 euro to 200 euro (thereabouts)
Nothing wrong with that in my eyes.

Hidden Agenda are greedy ****s anyway, forever overselling gigs! Book good acts but wreck the vibe, always feel like Sardines going to one of their sold out gigs (Kiasmos - District 8, Run the Jewels - Opium Rooms, Jackmaster & Fatima Yamaha - District 8)

I understand promoters oversell but I was at D8 gigs that were sold out run by Archetype and they weren't as busy at all.

Agree about Primavera, it's still a very reasonable price

Not really, and not by 30 - 40% in its 2nd year.

Primavera as mentioned, Glastonbury, Sonar, Berlin Festival, Isle of Wight, Coachella have all done it, off the top of my head.
I'm sure there are countless other examples of festivals doing it once they start to get popular if you're bothered to look.

so basically it's ok to increase prices if it's longer than 2 days? or the acts are to your tastes?
Primavera is essentially a 3-day festival too. otherwise we might as well say that Metropolis is a 3-dayer because there's a few acts playing the night before and are technically counted as part of the festival.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

    yes really.

and Metropolis hasn't gone up 30-40%.
the full price tickets are the same as last year: €145.

the only difference is all early bird tickets are €130 this year, rather than having 3 different tiers last year, starting at €99, then going to €119, and then to €129.

the €99 tickets were gone within the first 10mins of going onsale too, with the €119 ones gone within 40mins. so the vast majority of people are paying the exact same price as last year - €130 for early birds, €145 for full price.

''If I bothered to look it up''

It was you who had mentioned the tiers going up, I wanted to know what festivals you were talking about in order to clarify.

Primavera ain't really my thing or the acts mr.dancer, you just assumed that. I didn't even bring it up, someone mentioned it as an increase.

Metropolis is more to my taste funnily enough, but the acts that are being booked and the layout of the festival is still really expensive compared to other festivals of the same tier internationally.

Even the DJ Shadow gig is taking the absolute p*** in terms of price. Look at any Warehouse Project night in the UK over the next season, you'd get 12 quality DJs at the same price.

i didn't assume Primavera was "your thing" either.

I stated that festivals increasing their prices isn't limited to Irish promoters, it happens everywhere, which is completely true.

not that it makes a difference in this case, as arguably Metropolis hasn't increased prices at all....

I agree that the DJ Shadow gig is a complete rip-off but not really to do with the point i was making.
as for WHP, yes it's good value for money, although the venue is vastly oversold and uncomfortably rammed. the price has also gone up 50% in a few years too in the same venue with the same calibre of acts, again an example of jacking up prices not being limited to Irish promoters...
