How come most cashiers in supermarkets are women? What do supermarkets have against men?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭LightsStillOn

Sure how could you expect them to mod a website and make the dinner, and get the kids collected from school and iron the washing. There's only so many hours in the day!

Aldi and Lidl seem to have a fairly decent gender split in their employees, so I'm going to follow through on this lunacy of this thread and blame the Catholic Church for female cashiers in Dunnes and SuperValu and the Anglican Church for self-checkouts.

Women have better things to be doing than nerding it up modding some website.

Because Boards members at a guess are about 70% men at least. Stands to reason.

I'd like to know the age profile of mods. See if there is any ageism going on. In fact I'd be interested in the way mods are allocated. Is it mates asking mates.

It depends on the forum. I wonder how many mods boards has on all the the forums combined and what the gender and age split are.

Highly doubt it, and it doesn't really stand to reason if the reason given is a vague guess!

The Second Shift precluding women from meaningful interaction with a fuller life, a very good point. Well documented as well.

I've precluded a few women from meaningful interaction with a fuller life due to a second shift.

That morning shift with the bad breath always sends 'em running. :)

Only three Mods, most or all likely female, thanked this post.
A fact that strongly supports the proposition - there would have been many more on a reversal of the same answer.

Oh there are, I got the job on both the female and aul wan basis. They checked before I was appointed (4 interviews, including two at head office - rubbish coffee they have). Now I have to prove that I would be up to the job if I had been selected on merit.

The title and the OP put together read as "Female mods - how come they're mostly male?"

Few minutes of extreme confusion after reading that. Perhaps I need to drink less the night before Boardsing. :D

Mod gender is as irrelevant as poster gender. Neither makes a difference outside of the Ladies Lounge/Gentleman's Club fora...Oh and pregnancy, that's pretty gender specific too. The rest, gender boundaries are largely gone in RL so why not on here?

Just out of interest, how exactly DO you become a mod on boards.ie because certainly any of the mods here are never ever removed from their positions if complaints etc are made. That's the one thing about this forum that sticks out compared to others.

Lord, if all the mods that users complain about (generally banned, or carded users :P) there would not be any left. Have you any evidence? You would hardly expect Boards to put up a big announcement - 'Ye were all complaining about (whoever), so they are gone' .... would you?

Mods have been removed after complaints, though it is pretty unusual.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

To be fair, it really doesn't. The unaccountability of mods is notorious on just about every big message board / forum on the entire internet. I can think of very few instances from all of the forums I've been a member of wherein a mod was kicked out due to complaints. What does sometimes happen, however, is that a mod will step down due to getting constantly trolled - Mooglor over on Reddit is a good example. Nobody fired him, but the entire community kicked up a massive revolt and for about three days, /r/Ireland was entirely filled with anti-Mooglor memes and protests.

Personally I don't even feel that the mods on Boards are actually the problem. Most of them are very friendly. It's the entire culture of "we keep a handle on discussions to make sure they don't go off in a direction we deem to be undesirable". That is rather unique to Boards, I have never encountered that on any other forum.

To put this another way, on every other forum I've been a member of (and I've been a forum fanatic since 2001), threads are locked or deleted when clear and serious rule violations occur. Nowhere else have I encountered the "this discussion can't go anywhere, locked", "this won't end well, locked" or "there's nothing more to see here, locked" attitude. It's an extremely vague form of moderation in which no actual rule violations are flagged, merely moderator intuition that a thread is undesirable.

tGC has had females mods for 5 of the last 6 years although none at the moment. tLL usually has a male mod. Think they still have one at the moment - at least Amirani was identifying as male at the last beers I went to.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,430 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

So how do you get to be a mod?

When looking for a new mod there are a few factors
    1. Contribution to the forum
    2. History on boards
    3. The way you conduct yourself in discussion.
    4. Make sure not female.

Don't know about anyone else but I secured a big discount for boards from a major coke cartel that also suppliers hookers. Seemed I was a shoe in for the position then.
